    This video is the first of four in a series that will cover the entire flight of Gemini 8.
    Captions have been added to show the mission transcript. There is no PAO commentary. Orbiter Space Simulator is used to show events when the spacecraft was in range of the ground stations. HD earth views are used whe the spacecraft is out of communication with the ground stations. There is limited video available. Thanks to Ed Hengeveld for the still shots.

    Love the story of Gemini 8: as a pilot I marvel at Armstrong's coolness under extreme pressure. I wouldn't have been able to keep my wits about me in that kind of stress....

      @CivicSTS 8 лет назад

      +ku4uv if Armstrong was the first man on the moon....then who set up the camera so we could see Armstrong comin down the ladder.  was the cameraman the first man to set fot on the moon and Armstrong second?

    • @coldplayplayer15
      @coldplayplayer15 8 лет назад +12

      +CivicSTS Number one the camera was on the lunar module. Number 2 there are no wide shots of Armstrong making his first steps. Number three the vast majority of pictures you see are a Buzz Aldrin because Armstrong was the main photographer. Any other questions? Have a nice day. 😊

    Oh man, I never knew Wally Schirra tried to contact Gemini 8! That's too funny. Shame he didn't seem to get through. I love how Flight didn't object at all, he just sort of laughed it off. I have a feeling a stunt like that wouldn't have gone over so well during Apollo or Shuttle years :D

    Thank you SO MUCH for developing this MARVELOUS video series. I am writing this comment on the 55th anniversary of the historic flight of Gemini 8 and the magnificent crew of Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott.

  • @Compy90
    @Compy90 3 года назад +2

    An important point raised in James Hansen's biography of Neil: if he hadn't been able to save the ship, NASA wouldn't have been able to figure out what went wrong because they were out of radio range at the time. And with the Apollo 1 disaster a few months later, that might have spelled the end of the space program.

    I was in the US NAVY 1963-1973. I was stationed at Treasure Island when Gemini 8 took place, and I can assure you we had 24/7 coverage. After all, the Navy had to pick them up, right?

    Welcome back my friend, it is good to see you again.
    Nice to see some Gemini mission material again & I love the transcript feature as well.
    This was a very important mission that was actually a failed one officially, but showed just how cool and calm men like Neil & Dave were when they had to be to save the craft & more importantly, themselves. It's no wonder that these 2 men would become Commanders of their own Apollo Moon landing flights in the years to come!

    40:09-till the end
    Dialog from here is utilized for the film First Man. In the film they talked a lot more simply and heavily edited (For the Mom and Pops of Oklahoma) indicating that they "over shot" the rendezvous with the Aegena. Did not realized it was A LOT more complicated (I.E. alot more corrections were done).
    The film compressed the whole thing to about 3 minutes...

    Thank you so much for yet again another fantastic production, LM5!
    One of my heroes, the late, very great animation director, Chuck Jones, once said, "No matter how difficult it is to create a piece of work, always make sure the love of creating it comes through first and foremost." That describes you and your work to a T, my friend. ;^)

      @lunarmodule5  8 лет назад +1

      +Joel D. Terry wow...Chuck Jones...one of my heroes! He was right of course, and this series will take a long time to put together but it will be worth it. I don't think I will do the subtitles on any future flight that lasts more than 10 hrs as the work involved is very time consuming. if I did it for an Apollo flight it would take several years to put together! thanks for your very kind words - regards LM5

    LM5:
    Many thanks for the marvelous RUclips video!
    I would certainly not know what was right or wrong, but it sounded like when the Flight Director asked for a reading again at 28:17, Carnarvon gave him the same reading again even though it was not what Gemini 8 had said...?
    Gemini 8: "Core eight one was zero zero zero zero one."
    Carnarvon: "Core eight one minus zero zero zero one."
    Is that the same? Carnarvon thinks so...?
