Apollo 10 - Full Mission Part 1. This video covers the last hours of the contdown thru the launch sequence to orbit for the Apollo 10 mission (May 18th - 26th 1969). Onboard are astronauts Tom Stafford (CDR) John Young (CMP) and Gene Cernan (LMP).
Apollo 10 was a full dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 mission.
This video is the first of a series to cover the entire air-ground communications and video shown during the flight.
On this video I have used some pre-flight training video showing the crew looking and using some of the emergency egress systems at Pad 39B, archive footage of the roll out of the Apollo 10 Saturn V, coverage of the suit up operations and TV coverage of the walkout and transfer to the pad. Static shots of the launch vehicle on the pad "on the day" was very difficult to sequence, because there is limited video available. I used the TV coverage video in sequence, but it does not synch to Launch Control at all times.
The launch video quality is not the best, but I used it as a historical record.
Space Simulator is used just before S1C staging and carries on through to orbit.
Audio is in "stereo". One channel is Launch Control and for the first and last parts of the countdown the other channel is Ground to Spacecraft. After tower clear PAO is on one channel and the other is the Ground to Spacecraft comms with the astronauts and CAPCOM (Charlie Duke).
All audio and video is courtesy NASA.
Thanks for reading this description - LM5
It's wonderful to have found a conspiricist-free zone!
That it is!
Anyone that thinks it never happend is a Moron!
TheHannible
Anyone who thinks that space travel is fake, should a experienced a rocket launch.
This will clean their minds for sure.
TheHannible some of them are very smart people. some people who love space travel are also total morons. please don't be disrespectful, just stick to your views.
Chrismofer
Yes, _some_ normal people undoubtedly are morons. However, _all_ moon landing hoax theorists are.
Rediscovered Lunarmodule5 today, after a long hiatus, and with huge joy like meeting an old friend. Never paid much attention to Apollo 10 before. Silly me. Am thrilled to have all this audio to delve into. Love it love it love it!
welcome back!
R.I.P. John Young, you were the best astronaut and will always be a legend!
Just watched this again and it just gets better...3 astronaut legends riding the Saturn V with Charlie Duke as Capcom. Man, it doesn't get any better! As I said in an earlier comment, you really managed to capture the build up to one of these launches. Awesome....
R.I.P John Young... men like these will be sorely missed.
Joe poppy. Times like this are sorly missed. We must be sure that Orion and SLS come to furishion by 2020. And classify the launch vehical ( rocket) as a Saturn 10.
I like the DSKY inset you have during the mosaic sequences in part 1. Very sharp work.
Thanks Louis
Yes! What a nice surprise seeing that DSKY display pop up.
Man, I'm keep repeating myself but thank you again! As someone who grew up in that era, I can't get enough of these...I love the way you did this one. The build up to launch is fantastic. Great job!
R.I.P. Tom Stafford. This full mission playlist is now a tribute to him.
An underrated mission and one of Gene Cernan's trying moments. Keep these coming, these are great!
This was a great time for Americans as we took our last training mission before the landings. I remember this Sunday 5/18/69 and having my reel to reel tape recorder at the foot of the television to tape. I was 14 and so excited to be able to see this. The Apollo 10 crew was one of the best sent into space and in my opinion this launch was one of the best! Thanks for posting
Another classic from lunarmodule 5. We all appreciate the time and effort you put in these. For me there was nothing better than listening to the crew to ground communication and of course Apollo/Saturn launch control.
RIP Gene Cernan....Ad Astra
its always these missions that i adore. the ones that fall under the cracks of the more notorious ones. nice job making this video!
Glad you like them!
Love the videos lunar module 5, thank you so much for the work that you do! Such a fun crew and fun capcoms through the mission. Seems like the guys really love talking with Charlie duke! Gotta love the oh shit moment too when they lost control lol
Matthew Winacott It was a fun mission - one I am hoping to complete after Apollo 8 - regards LM5
this is going to be great!! thanks for all of your hard work to post these....they are awesome!
Stafford is remarkable!
I thought I was doing something good buying the last remaining 6 dvd set from Spacecraft Films -Apollo 11 Men on the Moon, but the stuff you have posted is worth it's weight in gold. So much of the Apollo program film was lost/stolen or whatever.. Thanks, LM5. I am eating it up. Due to non-interested parents and a school system that was and is the pits, I missed the launch, landing and first steps of Apollo 11's flight. Indeed, I missed most of the coverage. I had the misfortune of being surrounded by people who didn't see the historical significance of these events. I am trying to locate someone who has the complete 30+ hours coverage by one of the networks. It doesn't matter which one, I just would like to "re-live" it in it's entirety one day.
I read once, on the web, that the BBC owns most of the remaining Apollo footage. True ot not, I don't know.
Thanks very much, LM5.
DP
Thanks for the comment Dirt - I appreciate all comments and try to respond to the majority. The BBC has "lost" its original recordings of the British Apollo 11 coverage - which is a darn pity. I am guessing you are referring to the fact that they own the CBS footage? You would have to ask them if they intend to ever show that footage again in its entirety (and if you do ask them tell them NOT to put modern captions on it or stretch it to widescreen!!!). Perhaps a neat idea would be to show that broadcast in its entirety in July 2019 - 50 years after the event. I have some and others have more of the coverage but I dont think anyone has the entire 30 hours. Unless someone knows differently!! regards - LM5
Still watching in 2020.
excellent!
Do these however you want.
These are just wonderful and look great!
What a great job of living history.
the sheer void of reel to reel audio for some of these missions is so poor its frustrating running thru them. you did an amazing job going through the archives of Apollo.
Wow....this one is gonna be fantastic....really looking forward to this full mission....one of my favs.....Thanks a TON my friend!!
Is anyone else watching this on the 50th anniversary?
This is fantastic! I have all of the Mark Gray productions that he did for "Spacecraft Films" and your productions are far superior! Keep up the great work!! Cant wait till you can put these out on DVD!! us Apollo geeks will pay anything for them
Hi Greg - first of all, thanks for the kudos - it is much appreciated. With regard to SCF - i think Mark has done an incredible job, at least and at last someone has managed to try to put all the footage together. As for selling these videos - one of the reasons for putting them up here was to provide them for free because this is the sort of thing that I would want to view if I hadnt thought about doing the series (indeed there is another guy doing one on Apollo 16 as I type this). I love putting the series together and if anyone else wants to have a go then I welcome that....if they want to charge its up to them, but at present I will continue to post for free on RUclips. Hope that is ok - regards to you LM 5
That slide looks seriously fun. Then again, the only time it is to be used is if the rocket is likely to explode, but it still looks fun.
This use of Orbiter is actually very cool: please keep it up...
Awesome footages. A joy to watch.
Thanks Rob
This was shortly before my 11th birthday. We were on a Sunday afternoon family drive and had stopped for a picnic. I remember my mum shouting from the car Apollo!!! just in time to hear the launch on the radio. I remember kicking myself for forgetting the launch and not staying in to see it on TV. There is nothing so frustrating as hearing an apollo launch on the radio
Oh its absolutely OK!! there is a ton of work that you have done here and its much appreciated!!!
Which episode of these has the part about the floating turd ? :P
Hello, I discovered this video with pleasure: I understood that the ascent stage of the SNOOPY lunar module is currently in solar orbit... but what is the fate of the descent stage of the APOLLO 10 lunar module? ? it is still in lunar orbit ...or solar? Or did it crash into the lunar surface shortly after separating from SNOOPY's ascent stage? Thanks in anticipation for your response!
The ascent stage was in a 9 mile low point orbit when it was discarded so would have eventually impacted the lunar surface. I do not think anyone ever worked out where though.
Regards LM5
Very cool footage of the rollout! This was the only Apollo flight to launch from Pad 39B. There were actually plans for a 3rd pad north of that. They called it a Moon port! But then came Nixon and the Republicans and the space program ended.
I add my deepest gratitude. I was fortunate enough to see Apollo 17 from the VIP area as well as 23 Shuttles from the press mound. Nothing like it. What's your background? I'm just a junkie, hooked on May 5, 1961 sitting on the floor in a circle in my first grade class listening to the transistor radio in the middle.
Arnold Zenker Hi Arnold - must have been quite a sight - Apollo 17 and the shuttle. I can imagine the MR3 launch was quite something too - thanks for your memories - regards LM5
Apollo 10 has always been my favourite mission. After it, Apollo 11 was almost a postscript.
It's interesting that of the three crew members, only the commander, Tom Stafford, did not return to the Moon for a landing.
David Howard For me - It has always been the "fun" mission of all the Apollo flights - that was mainly down to the crew. Thanks for the comment - regards LM5
***** I would think Apollo 12 was the "fun" misison.
The crew of Apollo 10 should have been given Apollo 11 instead because they had better personalities and conveyed their spaceflight experience to the public 10 times better than the crew of Apollo 11.
I do recall after ALLL THIS TIME' it was a very hot hazy day at launch. Hrnce the blinding of the video quality with all the glare
Automatic tumbs up 👍🖒for me 🤘
Yet another excellent video. Thanks!
Apollo 10 was the only time they used pad 39-B during the Apollo program. Was Apollo 11 already rolled out? I've never seen a photo of 2 Saturn V's on pads A & B at the same time.
Mark Percival Apollo 11 was rolled out on May 20. The decision was made to keep Apollo 11 in the VAB so as not to subject it to any acoustic forces from the Saturn 5 as Apollo 10 was launched.
It was also kept in the VAB as precaution in case anything went wrong during the 10 launch.
I read in some old newspapers a couple of months before the launch speculating that Tom Stafford could be the first man on the moon.
also my favorite mission....and I think this may have been the best overall crew to have flown any Apollo mission....two of the guys would go back to the moon in command of their own mission and Tom Stafford went on to head the astronaut corp I believe as well as fly ASTP. Great to see 9 and 10 get their props....these guys flew awesome missions that have kinda been forgotten with the great flights that came later. I throw 7 in that category as well. maybe you'll post Apollo 7 as well??
Thanks, '' blue sweet wrappers'' is that way apollo 9's cm was called gumdrop?
17:54 this is great watching the last preparation with all the excitment , this was such a dangerous crazy Mission, this was really the first flight of homo sapiens to the moon, i would like to see that exciting last moments + the entry in Saturn 5 from all moon missions
+I'mAlwaysRight correction : apolo 8 was really the first flight of homo sapiens to the moon, it was to Long ago so i forgot
+I'mAlwaysRight Apollo 8!!!
Just one question, why are the CSM and the SLA wrapped in plastic during roll out?
Probably to protect them from dust, I guess.
Thank you forever for these! I've always wondered from day one of this mission that had Apollo 10 been on the USSR's foot that it would've made the landing. I wish there were a book to balm over the technical and political cases against the Apollo 10 landing (and an an engineers and astronaut poll over that) . I suspect Warner wouldn't have waited! As an aside, lunarmodule5, I've been trying to dig up as much info on the X-20 DynaSoar before that advanced project's "lost" in history (heck, I'd love to make a full scale model of it inside and out!) so if you have any tips of deep engineering or developers references please drop me a line! Thanks!
+jim I think the fact that Snoopy was too heavy for a landing married to the fact that nasa hadnt tested comm with two s/craft at lunar distane or had experience in operation the LM in lunar orbit and using its descent/ascent engine meant it was easier to fly 10 like they did to sort out those unknowns and let 11 make the first landing attempt. as for the x-20 - I dont haveas lot of info on it...if I do I will let you know. regards LM5
Cernan said in a 2009 interview that Snoopy's ascent stage was short-fueled, so had they tried to land they would have been unable to make lunar orbit during ascent. Of course...when they undocked from Snoopy...it made a prograde burn out of lunar orbit and into orbit of the Sun! Snoopy is still out there...somewhere...
I heard NASA will be going back to the Moon, so maybe JUST MAYBE, the new crew to the moon might just find it orbiting the moon.
It's in a solar orbit, so maybe when we visit an asteroid!
Apollo 10 is in work
Apollo 10 is another in progress full mission - will be completed one day
Thanks for the uploading.
Here's a trivia question for you: how many astronauts flew to the moon twice? And of those men, which walked on the lunar surface?
That would be Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and 13), John Young (10 and 16) and Gene Cernan (10 and 17) - Young was CDR of 16 and Cernan was CDR of 17 and both walked on the moon - Young was the 1st to orbit the moon on seperate occasions and Lovell was the 1st to orbit and fly-by the moon. Did I win a prize?
***** You win the prize of knowing you have mastered your subject. Congrats! (P.S. When are we going to be able to get this and your other launch animations on DVD?)
Louis Varricchio Hi Louis - only just seen this post! sorry for the delay - - - I wasnt planning on making them available on DVD....I kinda thought having them here was ok
Too bad... thanks for your reply.
lunarmodule5. Whats the latest news on ORION and SLS? I. Would love the idea if they classified the rocket as a Saturn 10.
"man this is the greatest job"... no kidding!
lm5 have you (or anyomne else for that matter) ever calculated the TOTAL NUMBER of astr onauts who went into space, from the earliest Mercury mission to the end of the Space Shuttle program back in 2011?
533 astronauts have been to space.
would you tell me how I may find apollo 10 (full mission 2) please??
Thanks
I'm watching this for Kerbal motivation

They got 'em some crappy audio in the radio communications.
Well it was 1960's technology.
why do they need space suits in a pressurized cabin? Just asking
RevolverAnthology they wore pressure/spacesuits, as they did on all US human spaceflights, except for the shuttle flights 5 thru 25, because, if there was a depressurisation they had a chance to survive. Hope that helps - LM5
***** Yeah but . . . I believe they call them Launch/Entry suits for a reason.
***** Thanks Paul
