  • Mitsuko Uchida conducts and performs.
    (continued from part I)
    The guiding spirit of Uchida's performing ethos is one of generosity and community - a sharing of the joy and privilege of great music, both with her collaborators and with her audiences. As she puts it: "All great art is related to being a human being and demonstrates how wonderful it is to be alive."
    (continued on part III)

    Oh Please look at the expression on Uchida' face - this is not just brilliant pianist - this is a person who is in love with what she is doing - I will never hear a better rendition of this awesome piece and I hve been listening for over 60 years

    Her performance is so convincing, it sounds as if she wrote the concerto herself. She is one of the rare few pianists who can make the music their own.

    Don't forget she's Japanese with their fine tradition of Kabuki, Noh theatre etc. But here her physical expressions and facial contortions have less to do with theatre than her TOTAL involvement with the music (including feeling the pain of Mozart)she's playing where she gives her heart and soul, if not her whole self to it in a performance where the EGO, as it were, is subsumed to this act of RE-CREATION! Unbelievable! sd goh (malaysia)

    My favorite classical composers in order are Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, and then Bach (yeah I know, Bach is Baroque). But this Piano Concerto is still my all time favorite composition, and Uchida nails it!
    Why? Because she does something that many musicians forget to do, express themselves. It's not about you, it's about the music. Computers are very technical as well, but don't have the expression spontaneously. If music aspired on this level in the US, it would all be better.

  • @davehshs651
    @davehshs651 10 лет назад +8

    Ms. Uchida's face expresses uninhibited, childlike joy in the music's beauty. Apparently, that looks strange (and maybe a bit threatening) to people not used to seeing or allowing such joyful lack of inhibition in a person her age.

      @moses Cordovero Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier consists of two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys for keyboard. It is more an exercise in composition than anything else. I think it is really boring.

      oh ok. i used to take piano lessons, where my teacher taught me how to play classical music, but she liked chopin and beethoven and did not like Bach, and so even though i wanted to study Bach, and even though i was paying her for the piano lessons, her will prevailed. and so i never learned how to play Bach's Well Tempered Clavier

    Obviously sometimes she doesn’t have a very clear idea about what to do with her hands when conducting and the musicians solve that trying not to see her very much. Anyway she has an impressive sense of tempo and of course she knows every thiny detail of Mozart aesthetics which is enough to create that magic in spite her herratic and distracting direction.

If you think for one moment Ushida is faking her emotions you know little about the far east and their well known lackof display of emotional feelings her level of display is quadruple her national standard reaction. She is in love believe it!!!!

  • @robtyman4281
    @robtyman4281 12 лет назад +1

    Uchida is one of the best exponents of Mozart there is. Just as Pires, and Pollini are near peerless at Chopin, so Uchida is near peerless with Mozart. Most pianists don't stick with Mozart, prefferring to move to other composers,but Uchida has built her whole career on playing Mozart (well most of the time!) and it's more than paid off for her, as plaudits have come her way over the years from other great pianists (both alive and dead),and many of the world's top orchestra's. Fiery and dynamic.

  • @cellofingers
    @cellofingers 11 лет назад +1

    Again i do not remember my comment that upset so many of you and I am not judging her artistic expression at all as the maestro played. What I did mention was the smirk on the first violinist's face as she is trying not to laugh out loud. Surely now how can that observation be construed as a negative comment.

  • @thesir27
    @thesir27 15 лет назад +1

    the thing that separates Mozart from any other composer is that his music does not at all sound "manmade." it essentially sounds like music in its natural, purest state. for example Beethoven's music, while excellent, has a very "human" quality to it, almost flawed (in a good way). i guess it depends on which approach you value more, though Mozart is my all time fav

    as far as all the facial expressions go, I'm sure musicians could control their faces however they want as ballerinas do (and I'm sure inwardly ballerinas are screaming from being on pointe, but they still smile!), it's just not as important. I think it'd be funny to film ourselves playing piano! and make bets on what facial style we'd be (Uchida, poker face, scowling, peaceful, etc.)

    Watching her uninhibited joy as she plays this music, I can understand why she probably has stayed with Mozart. She loves the sheer joy of it as, say, compared to the melancholy drama of Rachmaninoff or the often tormented music of Beethoven.

    Why the "ornaments" between 2:17 and 2:44. This is not a cadenza time..
    It seems to me being disrespectful not only to Mozart genius,but to music lovers alike specially in such a well known and beloved masterpiece.
    Good and sensitive performance, otherwise.

    @Jitpring I agree in the first part, but I don't think there's anything wrong in listening to Mozart, Beethoven or Bach (for example) as background music. A lot of string quartets, symphonies, etc. were made for background music at parties etc.
