- This experiment isn't repeated in the same way as in the show, and therefore I can't make any real claims about the shows legitimacy. In Breaking Bad, Walt uses thermite to melt through a lock, but can thermite actually melt a lock? Let's find out! I make thermite and burn a lock with it.

Trust me, I can melt a lock with thermite, but the way it's done on the show is misleading.
The reaction needs to be done in an enclosed space to contain the heat, like how railroad tracks are welded together.
Sure, I didn't use the same lock as in Breaking Bad, which is necessary for a proper experiment, but simply placing the thermite on a lock won't cut it.

Also if you did it in something like say a metal container or something would it have burned the lock since the heat is contained?
@@Firebolt7317 I'm honestly not too sure. I'd have to try it out. It'd definitely soften up enough to be cut easily though. Some other thermite mixtures that burn hotter and or longer may be able to melt it entirely, especially if you use a lot of it.
@@SomethingAbtScience true pure thermite probably wouldn't be able to melt through it by itself but it is actually an interesting idea. Until somebody is crazy enough to do it themselves I guess we'll never know. 🤷♂️

But it’s definitely possible for the thermite to melt the lock. They use thermite to weld railroad track together. It most definitely will melt/weaken steal enough to open the lock just takes more effort/different mix of powder
It works on railroads because it's done with a mold. The mold acts as refractory and contains the heat from the thermite reaction and allows it to transfer to the iron. The explanation in this video is a good simplification, but the underlying physics are a bit more complex and difficult to understand. Essentially, raising a solid to its melting temperature is not alone enough to melt a solid. There is an additional amount of energy called the latent heat of fusion which is required to actually cause the solid to melt. Unless you can increase the temperature to melting point and have enough energy left over to supply the latent heat of fusion, it will remain solid, which is what I'm guessing is happening here.
I belive it can be done if you get a mixture that 1 burns slower and longer and 2 is placed precisely but im just a dumb smooth brain

I've seen them use a thermite mixture to weld train tracks but it's in some kind of clay or putty and burns very slow and even.
The clay piece is called the shoe. It guides the molten metal where it needs to go.

So heres the thing, I just skipped to the reaction part, your thermite is not well mixed at all, you have pockets of reactions throughout the powder instead of just one large reaction. You can see this because of how quickly your reaction dies. This could also be due to having an uneven ratio. Another problem is I don't think your maintaining a sustained reaction due to temp as well. Usually mixing in Mg powder helps alot too.
There is cases of thermite being used to melt thru tank armor in WWII so there is no doubt it would work, but its all in the mixture quality, grain size, additives and many other things.
I give you props for making homemade thermite, you're on the right track, just keep working at it, it all gets easier with time (or at least science does)
Look into how thermite grenades work ik they use some different combo of set up for more power could be fun to recreate
Repeat the experiment but wrap it in kaolwool. It's not time that's the problem but rather heat transfer. If you increase the time, so does heat transfer, but you can also increase heat transfer to the lock by using insulation to minimize heat loss to the surroundings.
Yeah, I was thinking of pushing the lock into the dirt with the thermite and covering it up. Maybe in a part 2 ill wrap it up.

Actually there are several formulas for thermite but great video! If you want to get into locks fast I would recommend kidnapping the Lock Picking Lawyer! He might even be able to get you out of trouble after the burglary charge?????

I did a thermite reaction in a saucepan when I was a kid and it melted the bottom of the saucepan off. I think you need to contain the reaction more, in your setup the thermite is too distributed and most of the moltern iron is lying on the ground around the lock. If you created a kind of funnel using sand to direct the heat towards the shackle I think you would find more success
Wow great video but I think the reaction could be improved by making the size particles smaller the powder you are using came for industrial grade for pigments or additives, if you mill them in a ball mill (you can make it with ball bearings and a can) you can get a smaller particle making improving the reaction, also in the burn of your reaction it looks some spots burn faster than others maybe it needs more homogeneous mixing. Ceramic cup with a hole in the bottom. Fill the cup with your thermite, place the cup on top of the lock..
All the run off will flow through the hole that should melt the lock..

Copper thermite is usually used to weld train rails together. I'm using iron oxide like they did in the show. I certainly could've done the experiment better, though

I wonder if the rapid heating and cooling of the lock would make the metal interior of the lock brittle enough to pull apart after flash cooking it with the thermite a few times.
I myself am also fork lift certified up to 20k diesel.
Now that's a good idea! Maybe use liquid nitrogen and thermite, as it'd need to cool quite rapidly to get really brittle.
And hell yeah 👍 I have no idea what the limitations of my certification is or what 20k diesel is, but good on you.
Just dumping the thermite on top of the lock isn't going to work, but thermite can easily cut through any lock if used properly.
Thermite is like gunpowder, no pressure no work. Put the thermite in a pipe and put the pipe on top of the lock. Square pipe with a slot will let you cut vertical and create the pressure jet you want.
Yeah, but that doesn't replicate what they did in the show. Then again, neither is what I did. I'm sure it can melt a lock, just not how they did it in Breaking Bad.

Walt's story of how a one-man commando used thermite to disable the Gustav Gun is made up. It was destroyed in another way. That story was just used to show Jessie and the viewers how powerful thermite is. But the way he melted the lock would be utterly ineffective in reality.

I didn’t watch the video cuz I don’t feel like it and I’m eepy. But if he is saying that the shows wrong, he prolly just did it wrong, cuz I think thermite is what they use to melt railroad tracks together, so if it can instantly melt through 2 inch thick steel, then it can melt a lock.
That’s fair, but no, it won't instantly melt through 2-inch thick steel. To join railroad tracks using thermite, a mold is used to contain the heat and shape the molten product. This molten substance includes alloying elements to create the steel that connects the tracks. Instead of directly welding the tracks together, they are separated by a gap that's filled with the molten steel product. Simply throwing thermite onto the track without a mold won't work due to the principles of basic heat transfer. And wrapping some thermite in tape and placing it on top of a lock like in breaking bad won’t cut it either.
Hmm I don’t think you mixed your thermite the best your burned way faster than when I tried mine so I think your burns out before it could do real damage, I heard the Copper Oxides are used instead of iron oxides to weld with thermite, I also suggest adding sulfur and a nitrate/chlorate salt to get a hotter burn. Magnesium might have some effect on the burn temp, I’m gonna try them one once I electrolysed enough chlorate. But very nice video.
If you watch indian workers, they actually use thermite to melt train tracks so they can join them. I highly doubt that wouldn't work on a lock. You must have done something wrong, but I am no expert !

Thanks. And yes, it is. There are many variations of thermite, and they're all "real." This is the most common form, and it's used in the show.

All the things written below are in fact useless, cause you think a whopping 10g of termite should be enough to melt a lock, otherwise it's all bs, waltuh was wrong and your proof is undoubtable.
If you want to do it properly:
Try making a finer powders of rust and aluminium, and get your ratios right, like molar balanced. Dry your chems. Mix them VERY thoroughly. Get yourself some sort of tube and PRESS your termite there, layer by layer, you should really compress it, and at the end have a nice stick.
That's like, all you need to melt a lock, but that wont allow you to make a loud statement of a popular series bullshitting about a thing you have no idea about
