      @Jaded Cynic the military MREs were packed with junk food: candies and such, which provided a lot of calories. They are also low on fibers to save bulk. Troops can go for 2-3 days without having a bowel movements. Soliders recounted tales of black, hard, football size of shits that can't be flushed down a toilet.
      There are ways that soldiers tell each other to keep their shits going: eat instant oats, drink more coffee, etc ...
      Not exactly healthy. The military using it doesn't mean good. Okay? They used to explode nuclear bomb and order soldiers in exercises to "attack" through or around the nuclear craters in some measures of protection. First to train the troops to attack through a nuclear war and second, to get data on health effects of radiation exposure and the protection required.

      @Jaded Cynic Kinda weird people pin weight loss for "proof" that certain diets is better or worse. It is only better at losing weight. Healthier overall? Questionable. Fast weight loss is used by doctors as a sign that "something's wrong". The military, again, using your yardstick, have problems with troops losing weights during sustained combat: increased energy expenditure, not sufficient time for rest and food. For them, the rate of weight loss dictate how long the troops can continue fighting before collapsing. In short, they actually need troops to maintain their weights and keep working; not losing weight. Soldiers in combat conditions require upwards and over 6000 calories per day. Good luck getting that in one sitting. Keto is being considered for recruits, to get them quickly in shape (because American 18 year-olds are getting too fat) during Basic Military Training (10 weeks). The Navy Seals are considering keto since apparently on ketosis, the body require less oxygen, allowing the SEALs to dive better. Other than that, they can't eat one meal per day and not lose weight; unless they are chowing down pure sugar.
      When they need the troops to carry as little food bulk as possible while getting as much calories as possible; essentially getting as much calories in one sitting as possible, they fed the troops with First Strike Rations, which is Calories: ~2,900 per ration, Protein: 15%, Carbohydrates: 53%, Fat: 34%.
      A good diet should maintain a healthy weight neither losing nor gaining weight. If you eat just 1 meal a day, it's harder to eat as much calories as 3 meals. Also, keto diet contains more proteins and fat, which make you feel fuller faster than sugars and carb. All in all, it means you eat less calorie per day. Simple. And you can't keep losing weights, it has to stabilise at some point.
      More controlled studies and studies of participants in "The Biggest losers" showed that in the condition of eating less calories, the body actually adapted to burn less calories while resting, and eventually, most people gain weight again.

      @Jaded Cynic You kept the energy levels cause the body sustained itself on your fat ass fat stores. When youre a regular weight person you cant fall on fat for more than a month. Even if you eat your entire days nutrient and caloric needs in one meal you still require your stomach digestion process to generate heat. The energy and clear head is the result of you cannibalizing yourself. It's almost euphoric cause the body doesnt have to expend any energy eating itself.

    • @tekrunner987
      @tekrunner987 4 года назад +4

      @@VT-mw2zb To add to what you wrote, there are scientific studies that show that a keto diet has adverse effects in the long term (as it's been used for a while for kids with epilepsy). For example: citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.603.3149&rep=rep1&type=pdf. It's great if it helps people lose weight (although it's absolutely not the only way to do that) but it's most likely not a healthy diet in the long term.

    • @moongem4489
      @moongem4489 4 года назад +6

      @Jaded Cynic Conflating weight loss with overall health is dangerous, especially if that weight loss is extremely rapid. By that logic, a diet of basically anything is healthy as long as you have a caloric defecit. (Which I hope you know isnt true).

    Excellent overview of antioxidants.
    One theory that I, personally, would like to see gain some interest is: Sourcing. Where do the tested supplement or nutrient substances come from? Because of the lack of evidence for or against efficacy and therefore regulation on supplements, some things (like calcium or iron) come in a variety of forms. Some are sourced as an extracted organic chemical compound, while others are basically... Rocks.
    Such a thing could potentially change the results of an experiment, but it's a detail that's so often overlooked that I've read several studies that completely neglected to mention the delivery form of Vitamin E, Calcium or Iron used in the study. While that doesn't invalidate the published studies' findings, it does raise further questions.
    As with so many things: More research is required.

      Iron in box cereal is just iron from nails, It's useless for our bodies, but iron from vegetables is completely useful, of course the source matters a lot and that's why vitamin pills are a waste of money.

    • @bordenfleetwood5773
      @bordenfleetwood5773 4 года назад +5

      @@fenrirgg That's basically what I'm talking about. Supplement pills purchased at stores typically label their sourcing (such as B-12 delivered as cyanicobalamin), but the usefulness of each is under studied. Big box stores and drug stores usually (but not always) sell cheap crap and you shouldn't waste your money
      Certain manufacturers make supps that are delivered in forms that are similar to what the body would get from a whole food source. They typically cost more. Are they useful? Unknown.
      Of the supplement studies I've read (and yes, I'm that kind of a nerd. I find research reports fascinating), the tested supplement's delivery form (source) is either not listed or is the cheapest, most worthless bargain bin trash available. It saves money in the study materials and lets the researchers pay for more participants to lend credence to the results... But really? Should we be surprised that iron oxide is worthless as a nutrient supplement? Or even iron carbonate? C'mon. That study was an all-but predetermined conclusion. What about ferrous glutamate? Because that one's out there, too. It just costs more. Do you get what you pay for? I haven't seen a study yet that addressed it.

    • @05Matz
      @05Matz 4 года назад +2

      @@fenrirgg Metallic iron is not exactly useless (if you're severely iron deficient, even cooking your rice in an iron pot will help you a little bit), but you can only absorb a very limited fraction of it. Organic compounds containing iron (like those found in meats and some plants) are way easier for your body to repurpose for its own use. We use inorganic minerals in fortified foods and supplements mostly because they're way cheaper, and we assume that we can just use some number of times more of it to compensate for the difficulty in absorbing it. It makes logical sense, but it's not something we've really rigorously proven under a wide range of circumstances, so we should definitely look into it! Unfortunately, this would require (several) non-trivial studies for every different form of every nutrient ever, so it would be extremely expensive science with no chance of leading a corporation to a patent monopoly on anything, so it's going to be a slow process.

    • @RustivoShackleferdia
      @RustivoShackleferdia 2 года назад +1

      This is something I’ve thought about a lot I would guess that 60-70% of the supplements currently on the market would be poorly or not at all absorbed into the body, I think there are a couple reasons to this one being that many supplements in tablet form tend to contain a very high amount of filler compared to the supplement itself, whatever you see on the tablet is probably filler. You could solve this by providing the supplement in organic vegetable capsules that are easily dissolved by the stomach, this would work and the supplements I like to take are but another problem many supplements on the market face is the supplement itself being either synthetic, bio unavailable( poorly absorbed into your system in its current form) or in the case of vitamins d, a, e and others the wrong form for optimal health benefits. So I would agree and say that this would be a major issue in testing if this is not taken into consideration as much as it should be.

I did high dose glutathione IVs and it honestly saved my life. The migraines improved tremendously. I hardly ever get them now and they are way less intense. I don’t need a study to tell me that antioxidants are effective, my results spoke for themselves. I will say that the glutathione supplements were no help at all though, it was the IVs that gave me results. IIRC glutathione is the only antioxidant that does not become a free radical itself after it neutralizes one.

For example, if the body already could use the antioxidant structure for more immediate reasons, then the amont needed before we see "antioxidative" effects will be greater. On the other hand, if the particular antioxidant is not needed, and there are no immediate uses for it, then new problems might arise from extra energy and resources needed to expel of it properly.

    Secondly, not all supplements are created equal. Bioavailability of these antioxidants is a big factor for its effectiveness and how it is easily absorbed by the body. Scishow mentioned that dosage also matters.
    Thirdly, supplementation is a holistic approach. Great combinations of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are required to fully protect our cells from oxidative stress and prevent degenerative diseases.
    Just my 2-cent on the topic. Well, actually it’s 3.

    without the anti-oxidents i would be dead right now. i took multi-vitamins, 4000 vitamin C, 400 E, ALA, ALCA and for serotonin and dopamine production - 5htp.
    with this combination i got no harm from the MDMA toxic, lots of energy day after and i could take it without loosing the effects because the body wasn't in trauma after each use since i insert so much anti-oxidents and multi-vitamin.
    B3 specific and 5htp is the combination to make sure your body take the 5Htp and use it for serotonin and dopamine and not for creation of B3 since it's first in priority.

    I've been saying this for a long time, but there's something about the interaction between the many molecules and compounds that you find in biological thing that just isn't there in isolated extractions. Just like you couldn't take all the chemical ingredients of a living thing and mix it together and get something alive. The arrangement and interaction matters. The emergent properties matter. And I never seem to hear of anyone studying that stuff much. I'm all for science, but this is an area were a lot of traditional folk medicine got it right. There are other compounds in the raw ingredients that make it fundamentally different than any of those compounds would be on their own. I don't know, this makes common sense to me, but it feels like other people totally ignore it as mumbo-jumbo when it clear as day that there is some kind of hidden but fundamental set of rules hidden in the structure and ratio and balance of things. How else could you explain life and consciousness springing forth from inert matter. Life is clearly more than the sum of its parts, and the delta between the raw materials and the end result must necessarily lie encoded in the structure and arrangement. There's clearly information there that we don't seem to be picking up on.

    Preservation of oil! If you don't take your vitamin E, add a capsule or two to any oil you want to extend the shelf life of.

      @Secret Sauce is Overrated I don't even like tea because it's bitter. And caffeine gives me headache. I only drink it like once a week. Coffee like once a month. mostly water and milk. And I heard milk isn't good for you either lol.

    I think this is a problem of observing something that is good and measuring it like its a cure all for everything without taking into consideration the things that can damage its good effects.
    dairy is number 1 in saturated fats and eggs are number 1 in cholesterol intake. red meat is a 2a carcinogenic and all processed meats are level 1 carcinogenics and also increase your cholesterol. milk contains estrogen which increases your risk of getting cancer and yogurt is basically condensed milk. so we have all of these cancer causing products that we consume way to much of that also give us cholesterol based diseases that we see as early as our 40s and 50s.
    taking antioxidants while consuming so many animals and animal products is like taking an axe to your boat while pouring epoxy into the holes. ya the epoxy is pretty good stuff but you are doing more damage over time that is way worse

      They often do take into account such confounding factors in studies. Most researchers do care about the validity of their results

      @@limiv5272 I seriously doubt that, because researchers can't watch people 100% of the time so they wouldn't know if they're eating 10 Snickers bars or lying about doing cocaine.

    Nutrition is very complex with so many chemical interactions you need to keep track under controlled scenarios explains why it's so damn hard to find a conclusive results, which by themselves, the inconclusive ones we have now, they don't necessarily mean that anti-oxidants doesn't work, the correct question should be like, when where and by how much do they do work, cause it's pretty much nonsense and unlikely to think that they wouldn't/don't.

    In short, don't rely on pills to give you nutrition you could otherwise get just by eating good food.
