I wish I had as much fun at work as Hank clearly did making this video.
We really need a Hank dancing compilation...
IS THERE MORE?!?!??!!!??!!?!????!?!!
Never saw Hank dancing. I'd like that.
Funky Sagan Cat The video on Electric Eels towards the end, thank me later.
FOR SCIENCE
Apparently my dance moves say I'm having a seizure...
No. Seriously. Strangers have asked...
hot
practice makes perfect. I used to be called frankestein because I was so stiff. Now, I'm super smooth...
Too funny!!! But if you're getting attention for your dance moves, know you are doing something right! Rock on and be happy.
It's the little kicks
Imagine you enjoy music and someone comes to you with concern "Are you okay?"
This video is just gold
AJ Guevara One of the best. Just like dancing.
Judging by his dance moves, I can state with absolute certainty that Hank Green is the Zodiac Killer
"Show me your moves!"
~ Captain Falcon
Peter Schmidt falcon punch!
Show ya moves*
"COME!"
This is what I came to the comments for
Darling, save the last dance for psychological screening
Sebastian Elytron hahahahah
It will be the dancing singularity
Science may want me to bust a move, but I am pretty sure that nobody needs to see that. Including myself.
Same. I actively refuse to dance in front of any living person. I will "dance" when I'm absolutely sure I'm alone though. I put dance in quotations because it's more like spastic flailing.
Ahhh, the classic jumping up and down!
i have no dance moves, i only have spastic arm flailing
I dance like an idiot all the time when I'm alone, nothing fancy, I just start furiously flailing my limbs all around like a maniac. My cat is terrified of me.
On a different note, why are some of these studies only about 60 or some people? How can you possibly get accurate results from such a small group?
Same but I don’t move my body !
Volunteering in a psychology lab, I know personally how difficult it can be to recruit participants for studies that take more than just a few minutes of their time. Even if you schedule 20 people for a day, there are days where only 2-3 show up
OMG, me too! And my teenagers hide in their rooms, lol 🌞
Thanks for making me laugh!
Lol I know that look when a dog or cat is thinking "wtf u doing hooman!?"
Hahahahahahahahah
"Studies have found people with more experience dancing are better at making sense of other people's dancing"
I can confirm. I never dance. I hate dancing. And I definitely don't understand why people would move in such complicated ways just to enjoy the music.
SuicideBunny6 it's a mind thing. You don't have to dance to everybody's music. Dance Bunny!
I tried tap dancing once
I kept falling in the sink
Software Man BRILLIANT \^_^/
Scishow has been needing a new pun lord, the previous one's have failed us, but you.... you are chosen. Go forth. Your job, from this day forward, is to make clever puns on educational youtube videos within a couple hours of them coming out!
Mathias Knight :'(
j/k Software Man is very funny.
Master Therion Your service was honorable, but you missed a video and the position demands perfection!
HI Hi
➖The only dance i do is moving my foot unconsciously listening to music➖
rick sanchez 79 but your foot's dancing. You dance man! Let the legs dance, let your inwards move and swing, shake that ass to the tune in your head, move your arms with the flow.! You are dancing man!
Paula Barrocas
Hmmm no
don't dance, watch people dancing.
especially if you're like me and your moves do not even come close to hanks.
make crash course dance for us!
My wife ran a night club in NYC in the 80's... she still married me.
“Old people dancing are adorable!” 😂😂
**SLAVIC SQUAT KICK**
*WELCOME TO RUSSIA!*
Rick S. ALLOH CHEEKI BREEKI DAMKE
danman1950 PAPALI PAPALI CYKA
CUE THE HARDBASS
Hahahaha I soooo freaking love those dances
They look so free and so happy... It is contagious!! Respect
can we have a dancer Hank just like muscle Hank?
MrMarans *muscle
Rustle Hank?
Razzle Hank?
I'm shure Hank is a happy, although ironic, dancer
2:37 "so just get that boy goin!"
As an aspiring Professional dancer, this is very interesting to me
I just headbang. I'm too metal to dance.
Well, movement of the neck and torso seems to be attractive
\m/ \m/
Good. Now move your right knee as you air guitar.
I actually play guitar. None of them are made out of air... lotta maple and rosewood, tho.
lol
What if i don't have any dance moves?...
does that mean i am nothing?!
It says you are very neurotic and introvert, because you are too shy to dance. :P
MajjkyTV I can't say you're wrong. XD
Software Man yes.
Hey! Only one good comment per video per person.
so that means the theory of telling what a person is from a dance move is invalid, or are those people who dont dance or have no dance move non-humans, a new race/species
Killing it with the dancing, Hank!
0:11- Can we please have a gif of this?
Yes please!
Ask and you shall receive.
j.gifs.com/rRWDl4.gif
Ryan Huntley thank you!
Ryan Huntley You magnificent bastard!
Ryan Huntley you have made my day thank youuu ♥️
What if you're super introverted AND you love dancing? O: I don't get to dance often, but I definitely get the sense that a portion of my attention is going to noticing other people, and maybe even adopting some of their moves if it seems like fun. Social chemistry while dancing is fascinating, thanks for the video! :D
I remember reading some chapter in an anthology of research on well-being (ed. by Kahneman) that on a list of what made people happy, doing meaningful volunteer work for others and dancing took the number one and two spot, iirc.
I'm glad Hank covered this, he makes things interesting.
"dance like your daddy, move like your mama or do what you wanna" pure gold
“More dance experience” typically means partner dance experience. The video seemed to say dance itself developed social cognition, but taking any type of dance class involves a lot of social interaction. So it could be just as valid to say “people with lots of experience in social situations are better at picking up social queues”. Which is much less mystical and surprising, but probably more true. I think this video was phrased in a kinda misleading and pop-sciencey way. :/
cjspurg +
This is like that xbcd? Comic where it shows that most statistical maps are just population maps
I am confused as to what qualifies as "dance expirence," a professional dancer definably has more years of dancing than the average clubber. So would dancing in general be considered as "dance expirence."
Yeah, it wasn't clear in the video. Even if any type of dancing counts, clubbing/going out dancing still involves a lot of social interaction.
Objection!
Even though it might be true that the predominance of social interactions in dance-related activities would increase your skill in picking up social cues, I think dancing in itself (even alone in your bedroom) still has a non-negligable part in it.
As a student in psychomotor therapy and dancer myself, I learnt that, by dancing, connexions between the emotional and motor part of your brain augment (as you "get to know yourself" through body expression) and therefore, when those mirror neurons come into place(in social interactions), it becomes much easier to "feel" the other person when he/she/they express him/her/themself and also to pick up the little hints of body language even when not dancing.
But keep your critical thinking ;)
Also since a LOT of people seem to have insomnia now due to the COVID-19 anxiety, I'd like to tell people dancing is a great way to tire yourself out so you can fall asleep, you release all your body's energy. Although it does kind of feel weird to be dancing in front of a mirror alone at 2am... But it is always fun.
I only know that skanking means I live in a beach town and that I know absolutely nothing about Jamaica.
If this was any other channel, I would have dismissed the video just for it's title. I mean, it contains all the common signs of tabloid pop-psychology clickbait. But experience has taught me to trust scishow.
I always thought that the reason I hip, hop, and can't stop was because Run-DMC gave me the OCD, G.
+SciShow
I find this a bit questionable if not weak. These studies seem to focus on things that are very eurocentric western in cultural focus. The sample is DEFINITELY small, so the indication that this was not carried out and double checked in many other non eurocentric cultures is highly likely. Not to mention, this doesnt even take into account cultures where dancing is frowned upon and people just dont or severely minimize such behavior.
did it says somewhere it was a global study where they took a sample from europe and extrapolated the results to the rest of the world?
why would the study take into account the effect of dancing where dancing is illegal?
wouldn t it be that you somehow think the studies arent diverse enough?
this has to stop.
Can you give an example of culture where people frown on dancing or don't dance at all? There are certainly examples where some kind of dancing is frowned upon due to morality or political reasons, but I can't think of a culture where there is a general dislike for all kinds of dancing.
Footloose, bruh. lol ;)
You're kinda right we know that in our western way it is kinda like that and he did commented briefly about other cultures but it is still something to question
Guys you can't just say that is from scishow and BANG! It is right, the method of science is about not beliving in stuff when there is weak evidence. I think even Hank talked about how important this is before
What if my dance moves are non-existent?
Legit, I never feel the urge to dance.
Even though one of my favourite genres is literally called Dance Music
well I guess my testosterone is really low, I have no grip strength and no woman will ever find me attractive.
Good thing I have lots of money to keep me company!
You're not alone my friend, I'm gonna go bang my head in a corner
You think low testosterone is a bad thing? Embrace your feminine side!
im the biggest loser ever and i have a girlfriend, you just gotta wait for the right women
*insert picture of Drax*
So what does moshing/headbanging say about a person? Beyond them being metal AF? \m/
Mystic Mind Analysis that we have a stiff neck iin the morning. 😆
Are bronies still a thing?
I think it simply expresses enjoyment of the music, same with foot tapping
Well, I'm glad I've been ballroom dancing for 12 years then.
Love you guys. You make everything look so easy and understandable. Keep on doing what you've been doin. ITS GOLD!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
I just bang my head like the Butabi brothers
The more you emote in a way, the more you comprehend other people emoting the same way.
“So, get out there, ‘cause science is telling you to *BUST* *THAT* *MOVE* “
So what does "Weird Al's" boneless boy dance say about him? Never mind, I think the answer is probably right there in his name. Oh well, he's a lovable goofball.
What if i don't dance?
"+ old people dancing is adorable."
I've never agreed more with someone
What was that saying about dancing being a horizontal wish being expressed vertically? Oh, yeah... Sexuality aside, as someone who has dabbled in dancing, you can definitely judge someone's personality by watching them dance.
Hank, your videos are amazing. I think having you as host for SciShow Psych is the best decision ever! Can you do a video about general anxiety disorder, and how anxiety affects us from a behavioral standpoint? I think many people believe they do not suffer from anxiety, and this causes a bigger issue altogether.
I tip my hat to you; the research on this video is amazing.
Change "is possibly" to "most likely". You even started the video explaining how dancing is a cultural phenomenon, and pointed out to its relationship with social cognition.
I know that feeling want to get up & dance when I'm at work.
Watching you dance made my day
I want to hang out with Hank SOOOOO MUCH after this video.
Awesome!!
What about those of us who never got the urge to dance, had to improvise by attempting random motions when forced to and to this day would rather sit down than get up cycle between random poses?
OK, dancing will be added to my post-therapy, post-depression phase, in addition to swimming, speed dating, gym, and hugging my new best friend. My brain is getting a back seat, as it is the cause of all my troubles 😄
I love this man so much
I love it when Hank goes a little beyond his normal self. The scishow episode about gold is one of my personal favourites.
As a dancer, this is by far my favorite video on RUclips
Well now I'm even more happy I went to all those underground raves!!
This must be one of the funniest videos of Hank Green hahahahaha I loved it.
Aw I wish he would have made more examples... :(
0:08 Hank: "You just get that urge to just start to do the moves" (*starts dancing). Hahahahahahhahaha.
So it's not just that I look stupid... Thank you Hank.
4:08
all i imagined was Captain Falcon saying
"Show mya moovs!"
Nice. Now i have science facts for my awesome flash move that only i like. Time to train those moves more!
Hank is such a dorky dad in this video
In 5:00. What if those who liked dancing to hiphop were generally more active... Now, being active is associated with feelings of happiness or more specifically "stable emotions," which could be the reason why they were better at interpreting other people's emotions (compared to those who tend to be anxious or have feelings of the like). What if it's not the dancing but the emotional stability brought by being active that is the key player that helped those dancers interpret others' emotions better? Just a thought.
2:38 Thank you for this.
Interesting and inspiring.
Best video ever!
This was really fun
This was a good episode
2:40 had me in stiches, go you good thing!
So then, what I'm gonna do is start dancing in the waiting room before a job interview so my potential boss will know what kind of a confident, open, conscientious, goofy mess I am as they enter the room, before we even shake hands.
That's bound to get me hired!
Right?
What if I do it in heels?
I have so many questions.
1:05 "these sudden signals" sounds like Hank is doing a Christopher Walken impression
Liked the video specifically for Hank's dancing.
I just saw this. You have a new sub
♫ Dance the night away ♪
It doesn't matter what style you bring
♫ It's dance magic, once you have it ♪
Let your body move, step into the music
That was funny. This is my favourite Psyshow Psych episode yet. xD
This is actually pretty funny, a lot of people say I'm good at reading others, and I've been dancing my whole life!
The video I never knew I needed
Dance like ur dady
Move like ur mama
Move like u wana
Many species dance to communicate information. Music actually activates a region of your brain involved in processing movements. Not symphony movements, but it's hard to ignore the verbal coincidence.
Music seems to be fundamentally about communicating internal and emotional information. Birds use songs to communicate. Even bees use dance to guide each other. They may not be interested in whether other bees are sad or excited, but emotions are just guides to action (or inaction). So they're definitely interested in whether another bee is "excited" about discovering a new patch of flowers, and where it's located. "Dance" is really just a label we use for communicative movement.
People also use movements to communicate. We can't all just bust out a guitar and start singing every time we have something important to convey, but prehistoric, pre-verbal humans used movements to convey important information. Modern people do too. We wave emphatically when excited. We also fall back on motion and gesticulate more when we don't speak another other person's language. We're good at interpreting movements because they are essentially pre-language.
Dance and music are fundamentally connected, which is why it's not so surprising that people process music partially as movement. Musical tones and physical dance both allow us to convey our internal emotional states without using words. Musical expression is more honest than words, because hips don't lie. It's much harder to fake body language than verbal language. In the same way your tone of voice means more than the actual words you say, your tone of dance communicates your internal state more honestly than words. So it's not surprising people use this information to choose partners. Lots of other species do too.
Aww, kept waiting for Hank to break out in dance to Talking Heads...'burning down the house!'. A long ago favorite of fellow biology nerds in college and why I married my law school boyfriend. Way before his time!
Employer: tell me something about yourself.
Me: *does the worm
I just want to hear Hank say twerk again. Literally made my day
I must be the smartest person ever because I’ve been cutting rugs forever!!!
Love this video-I’m going to go shake my booty.
As a highly empathic Kpop stan I feel this video to my core. It explains so much!
This video, through no fault of its own (I mean that wholeheatedly), kinda made me irrationally panic a bit just out of my anxious introversion *screaming* "I can't / won't do that". It's something I can objectively acknowledge, I know where it came from, is all good. But I honestly didn't know sitting down to watch this that I was gonna react that way.
"Henry you dance like a wooden indian" ~ Modest Mouse, a line perfectly reflecting my own dance skills, or complete lack there of.
That's awesome. I wonder if it would help those with mental differences like ADHD who can sometimes kinda suck at reading people?
Anderson Silva famously loves dancing. It totally makes sense as to why he could read his opponents moves so well, now.
This has just become my new favourite SciShow Psych episode. Much guffawing occurred 😅
Wow as a former preprofessional ballet dancer, this video made me feel so validated, lmao!
Wow come to think of it I DO only move my right knee when dancing
Every website that assesses my personality says that I'm good at reading people... I DON'T SEE IT!!!
Annnd now I'm off to watch old vlogbrothers videos... Humpy Hank n all! 😁😂
Hank, dance-off, you, me, now!
My go-to dances the Carlton. My moonwalk is rarely appropriate for the situation
I never danced because looking stupid is not my game :D
Hank impersonating the typical attractive dance moves is the most cheerful thing I've seen today
