1986 Ration Lightweight 30 Days Prototype MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Testing RLW 30

- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- The RLW-30 was a prototype 24 hour MRE tested by Special Forces troops in September-October 1986. Containing 2,100 calories yet only weighing 15 ounces, this was an innovative and state of the art design that surprisingly wasn't ever adopted. This ration after shipping and fees cost me $560. It is the only time one has ever been filmed - and like many rations on this channel it can serve as a reference point for collectors, historians, and people interested in food packaging and storage.
This is the only one I have ever seen outside of Natick Food Lab's prototype archives. It was a well worth it gamble to see how this freeze dried ration held up. See for yourself how this one turns out.

NICE HISS™
I'LL BE COMING BACK AT YOU WITH SOMETHING NEW OR OLD, ALRIGHT COOL SEE YA™
"Take a look at that bacon bread crisp, that's something we're nevere going to see again and it's stale and completely inedible; I'm not taking another bite of that."
*Proceeds to take big chunk out of it as soon as he sets it down*
Never change Steve, never change.
*tastes suspicious substance*
Steve: "Yep, that's poison"
*tastes some more*
leave him alone, he's hungry... :)
cost him 560$. would eat that too, even if i shit my pants after *lol
anyone else think Steve has some unseen partner who refuses to let him eat aise from these mres?
@ 17:25
You're not getting the full Steve1989 experience if you're not watching his videos at 1am with work/school in the morning
Yup
No joke it's what I'm doing right now lmfao
Is there any other time than the predawn hours to watch him?
1.30 am dawg
Exactly
"From the taste alone, i can tell you it's not edible anymore."
Lol then takea anothrr bite, yup its rancid
Anthony
Numb film in the mouth oy!
lmfao
I love the irony of it
6:33
Lol does anyone else say "nice hiss" now when they open up vacuum sealed or canned food? For some reason these videos are so therapeutic lol.
Yes...I do...and I use a p38 sometimes as well.
Haven’t said that....yet. But I have caught myself saying “nice” quite a bit. Steve is infectious in a good way
I look forward to that damn hiss now
HAHA ofc i do
but when I open mine... it's always "no hiss"
"Oh yeah thats also rancid... i gotta get a bite of this thing"
From an older video.
Awhh, that smells bad *takes a bite* gagging sound. Yeah, that's gone rancid.
A few moments later....Let me try that again *more gagging sounds* Yep, it's gone bad.
HERO MODE
I had a nice laugh when he said that.
He wants to believe that it isnt rancid
One day: famous last words :)
I feel like Steve will be the only one of the human race left, he'll be so immune to all bacteria and viruses by the end of these tastings lol
Lol. I concur!
Read "Alas, Babylon." Central Florida survives.
*Sits atop a quiet mountain, looking out across the vast empty scenery, contemplating his solitary life* "This is...........nice"
I’m amazed he hasn’t had botulism
Rachel Spenser lol
Steve I think your digestive system deserves a purple heart. Your tray as well. 🏅
I was okay, but the tray needed to get incinerated from contamination.
@@Steve1989MRE doesn't that happen after every video though?
i love your videos
@@Steve1989MRE let's get this out onto a tray
PRESS (D)iarrhea TO PAY RESPECTS.
_"I'm not gonna eat any more of that"_
*Hand appears out of the ether, to eat more of that.*
The man, the myth, the legend.. Steve has arrived to bless us with another great video.
Mr. J I hope it didn't cost too much
When He hasn't posted a video in a few weeks I always wonder if a ration finally got the best of him.
It’s not just me then.
I wonder if his last wish will be to have a closed casket funeral, then have a buddy of his open it halfway through and then, (through the tears) go... "nice hiss"
Lol Pat!! Pretty SURE he's a gonna Freeze dry his self. Yup. If he can, I'll bet ya he will. No hissin'. He's good to go!
Mallac hahahahahaha I always think the same thing when it comes to some of the questionable things he eats from some of them.
think he’s proved now he’s indestructible
“That’s not... oh wait.”
That was favorite part. 😂
Hawk Davis literally had me deceased 😂😂
The sweet soothing sounds of Steve eating old, sometimes rotten food. Awesome.
You could even say... Nice.
“Look at this bacon cheese bar. This ones stale and inedible and I’m not gonna eat anymore of it.. k I’m gonna take one more bite of it” 😂
Jordan_Sal 413 lmao
13:39 cracked me up for some reason... (chews bar with no emotion on his face) "No...." 😂
-Some of the most inedible smelling and tasting food of all time.
-Still manages to make the video last 20 minutes.
What a legend. Never change.
i think “Life” cereal bar just literally means it’s made with Life cereal lol
Hey Mikey he likes it..lol
I Don't Blame Steve for Not Knowing About Shitty "Life" Cereal 🤣
Heck. "It's only THIRTY TWO years old."
Only you, Steve. Only you.
It's crazy that this Gem of a human being just eats old military food and as the audience we simply can't stop watching
The Gordon Ramsay of MRE’s
This isn't f***king raw though, its NICE.
More like the ChrisFix of MREs
Happy little mre's.
Ramsay would've offed himself if he had to endure this stuff :D
What? Ramsay is a pretentious asshole and Steve is a genuinely nice guy who is very forgiving with his food. lol
I've watched this man eat so many old things that whenever I see something 1970 and up I say "Oh thats like brand new"
"Awww, that's rancid... I gotta get a bite of this"
Whoever ends up with Steve will be a lucky woman, she'll never have to worry about him not going down on her.
Isn't he already married?
Or being a potentially bad cook
If your girl tastes rancid... she's doing something seriously wrong.
Steve's homeymoon: let's get this out on a tray...
Would she even want him to after seeing what he puts in his mouth
Steve: "Get a good look at that. That's something that we're never going to see again, and this one's stale and completely inedible! And I'm not gonna eat any more of that."
Steve: 👀💧
Steve: "...'Kay, I'm just gonna get one more bite of this..."
Why are rations so damn fascinating?
Right?!
That extra beef jerky is much newer than 1986. Inkjet printing of that type was just barely something that existed for computers in 1986. No chance they'd use it on food back then, and if they did, definitely not for a prototype.
It looks like it was printed by a Videojet system, which have been around since the 60s. I would assume several of the food producers would own these as they are relatively cheap and reliable to use.
“Let’s check out this extremely sketchy beef jerky”
"The only thing I think is edible is..."
*Eats everything*
Hey Steve, love seeing the rare and prototype rations :)
any chance of any modern rare stuff like a TOTM or similar?
Hey CC! The old and rare stuff is always the most fun to review. Whether it's still good or not even.
TOTMs are not so rare but someone did send me one. I could give it a look - just a reduced calorie MRE used in training missions.
Let's get one out onto a tray !!
Steve1989MREInfo Honestly it's nice to see you document fresh rations too, to see them as they were intended to. And to be able to show those to the generations to come.
I eat TOTMs while fishing. They're just the right amount for a lunch. There are 12 menus that vary slightly by supplier. About half the price of a full MRE, too.
Go for it love your videos.
Damn! You are like the Where's Waldo of finding neat rations!!
yeah like, i don't even know they sell indonesian rations to the public. rations are very uncommon and rare in indonesia. i think no one outside the TNI circle is aware at all on how good our rations were
Ahhh the '80s.. Pastel Suits, Big Shoulderpads, Rick Astley and.... Dehydrated prototype MRE concepts... Thanks Steve for not "Rick rolling" us and preserving another rare MRE that would have otherwise been forgotten.
Steve, first of all, i really like your video's. Second, the shelf life is drastically reduced when there is no aluminium vaporised on the plastic, because the molecular arrangement of plastic allows oxygen to pass through. Thought you might found this interesting to know. Keep on making these awesome videos.
You're an expert. You should work for the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research,
Development & Engineering Center.
You don't think they've watched every video? This guy is doing their research, and paying for the privilege!
Pygar2
I think you may be correct. No question that Steve has good insight and I wouldn't be surprised if the military doctors haven't asked to test his immune system to see how he manages eating these potentially dangerous items.
-"No."
*takes second bite*
-"That's not edible"
"Hm, that's not- oh wait.. Oh. That's pretty bad."
8:03 "whelp, im here to examine rations, and this is what i do" spoken like a boss!!!
Steve, never think we're laughing at you, you're a goddamn national treasure.
"Plastic is not an oxygen barrier" - Burt Gummer 1996
Tastes like toilet paper
Earl? That is the toilet paper...
The two for one special again! :) NICE
Its like mres black friday!!!!
Steve, you still surprise with these extremely rare rations you track down. As a collector for over 15 years, you still manage to keep teaching me new things with videos like this.
2 steve videos a day keeps the no hisses away
I know I’m not the only one who’s sees a new video from Steve and automatically smiles and relaxes because I know I’m in for a good time. Awesome video man thanks for sharing it
Beverage BAR?!?!
I didn't know that 1986 was THE FUTURE
Steve thank you for this rare documentary of what is a do do bird.. or the precursor to the LRP... ince they are freeze dried mainly and cold weather... your expenditure has educated many people who appreciate the armed services... fredom is never free and bless our troops and what the republic stands for
2 videos in one day. I must have died and went to MRE heaven👍
Aaron St.Michel it certainly was Nice
Yes it was 😊
"I think maybe the coco bar is still good...." bites.... "no..." takes another bite, "no, its definetly not good.". What a guy!!!!
Insane finds, history for sure!
But Proto, that stuff is rancid and inedible
i don't know why but the mre's from the 80's fascinate me the most. if you ever have any kids i hope they give school food reviews in the cafeteria everyday. that would be pretty cool. another great video buddy.
Hi Steve,
I have enjoyed your MRE reviews over the year since I've subscribed. I have recently come into possession of an unopened case of MRE's packed 3/91 with an inspection date of 3/94 lot #1061.
I would love for you to be the one to do the opening and review of this 12 pack case. Let me know what you'd like to do.
Thanks.
I hope your offer is accepted!
Send it to him, his address is in the description
Curious, did you send them? I'd love to see them in the future 😊
Can't imagine surviving off that for 30 days.
Its only give you enough vitamins for 30 days
@@tsaitaj so are the items in the ration meant to just supplement outside sources of food?
I found my grandpa's Vietnam era pilot psk-2 survival kit, still sealed when we were looking in his toolbox. I put it in the freezer to keep it from degrading any more. I'd send it to you, but I don't think my parents would like me getting rid of it.
When I was a kid we use to spend our winters in Lake Wales which is in your neighborhood. I very much enjoy your your channel so thank you for that.
I watched your face go through 10 different emotions in 10 seconds! 😂😂 Glad you didn’t eat that!
I've never really looked into MREs or military history in general, but seeing how enthusiastic you are about these, I can't help but get hooked on them too.
Life Cereal Bar is thirty years old. Hey, lets get Stevie, he likes everything!
I'm a simple man, i see Steve i click on Steve. nice!
Mmkay
Steve, I swear you went through just about every facial emotional expression known to man after that first bite of the pecan bar. Classic! Love your reviews.
Life was actually the brand name of the cereal back in the early 80s. I remember seeing the boxes, "Life" cereal, next to all the Kellogg's sugar pills masquerading as cereal.
Hey Mikey, he likes it!
I dont know where you live, but we've still got life cereal in Canada
My son and daughter, 10 and 8 years old respectively, are addicted to your videos (so am I!). So much so that yesterday I drove to the Army Barracks ...and bought 8 MREs. We spent the last 2 days making "Steve Videos" of us eating them. They were surprisingly good! The kids had so much fun (so did I!) They tell their friends they have "the coolest mom" lol! It's the little things in life!
Thanks for entertaining us... ...and giving us a fun thing to eat and bond over!
Fyi..I realize my screen name doesn't imply that I'm a woman...I am... it's just an homage to the movie "Porky's"
Papa blessed us with two videos
Is it just me or is the sound of the crinkling of the ration packaging just so satisfying, and NICE!
Steve for president!!
Make MREs nice again lmao :v
216betto
NIce, lets get this plan out on the plate....
"I ain't gonna eat anymore of that"
"Okay maybe one more bite" what the hell Steve lol. That always gets me when you do that. Amazing review! I agree if they would've perfected this it would have been great.
Hey Steve!! Keep uploading bud. Awesome job!! Just something about your videos make me want to buy some MREs! Keep them coming!
I did just that, I’ve tried a couple of countries and some U.S. MRE’s as well. I’m in Hawaii so we’re prepared for the next storm!! Thanks to Steve and MRE Mountain!!
Haha yes!!! That's awesome. And you totally know when I open up a can I'm going to say "nice hiss". Haha
Yes, the plain clear plastic is porous, it was not intended for long term storage. Foil packaging gets you 2 layers of plastic with solid foil as a air barrier. Thanks for filming and trying this one. We really enjoy these.
Yeah, the Roto Rooter guys draw straws on who has to go to Steve’s house
10:49 11:41 The range of emotion in these two moments is great.
*LIFE Cereal. Mikey likes it*
Thank you for putting this out Steve! Very cool to see how far we've come with rations. At least 86 was a great year for movies!
Lets get that onto the tray! Mk! Nice!
Efka Efka my friend and I joke around and say this all the time since we’ve been watching his videos
Thanks for what you do Steve. These reviews are more important now that ever with all of the prepping going on and folks trying to figure out what to stash to sustain life in an emergency situation. You are THE BEST at what you do and I am sure that it is an expensive mission so the cost to you alone is impressive but the thoroughness with which you approach each meal and the education that you provide is priceless to many of us! Question, once an MRE acquires that chlorine taste is it dangerous to eat? Is there any safe way to rescue the calories in a stale meal? Thanks for your commitment.
All of steves subs should make our ringtones. "Alright nice, letsgetthis ona tray" edit...no it would be "nice lil hiss"
No that's the Notification sound XD
The most chill thing on the internet is this channel.
hey. I just met you. I believe you are a brave man. there is no way im eating anything like those packs after the smell test you gave.
my brother was 13 years older than me. he joined the USAF about 1969. he would send me, from Tucson back home to SC, the packs that came with rations he would get. the napkin salt, pepper, gum and the P-38 can openers. I never saw any food. they must have been pretty good.
thanks for the nostaligic thoughts. ill look around and see what else you dare to eat.
As I watch your videos I fell you are representing and documenting these meals for all to enjoy. You are doing a great job .
So this is what Steve's nightmares looks like. That lemon-lime bar? *shudder*
"IT SMELLS PRETTY SKETCHY" LOL IDK Y THIS MADE ME LAUGH and when you ate that pecan bar it looked like you went through the 7 stages of grief.
I always feel so bad for Steve when he's disappointed with an MRE, he genuinely looks so sad.
Because he has nothing else to eat that day 😔
Thanks for the video steve! Sorry to hear about the Prototype packaging not being able to withstand the previous storage conditions. Even still, it was worth it to be able to see this thing opened up and broke down. Keep up the great work!
I don't know how they would make that little amount of food last for 30 days
Each one had 1 day of food, the trial was 30 days long.
I would it all in an hour lol
This is the only way I'm going to get a reply but is it me or is that a Steve1989 logo on a shirt hidden on his shelf?
It was a 24 hour ration. You were supposed to eat one a day for up to 30 days.
2100 calories aren't going to last you 30 days 😂 no matter how you streatch it.
I'm sitting here digging the fact that our man Steve is buying, consuming and filming museum pieces for posterity.
I almost feel unworthy of his wholesomeness
These videos are so damn relaxing
I love your style of history preservation. These videos should be played in military museums
That's rancid. Takes bite😎😎👍🏻
I give you alot of respect for eating these things and keeping an open mind and giving them an honest shot. Most people would take that bite and IMMEDIATELY say YUCK like a reflex, but you dont. I find that cool.
Pull off that key and lift that tab!
Words to live by
Steve: This smells rancid, crunch crunch crunch and it is. Thanks for the good times brother.
This ration or the grenade!?
Thanks again Steve for a great video. I’m always amazed at the range of rations you review and then amazed all over again with the range of your knowledge about them!
Hi STEVE!!! Loved the video as always! That beef jerky looked good...one of my favorite snacks! Another great one! The rice in the chicken and rice looked like maggots for a moment, then I remembered it was rice 🤣 much ❤️ as always!!!
Hey Crystolla! Thank you for checking this one out! I put two out this evening. The beef jerky looked okay - but it was pretty dry. And considering it's age and this slightly off smell, it was far from appetizing. Fresh beef jerky on the other hand is always nice. I just had buffalo jerky last night and it was even better. I will never look at freeze dried chicken & rice the same after you mentioning the maggots... yeesh! hahah Always great to see ya and catch ya later!
Steve, can totally hear the disappointment in your voice with this ration but it was really awesome to see you review this because it was so unique. Glad I wasn't one of those soldiers that had to live off of it for a month in testing.
NICE!!!
Can't go wrong
I love that you open these things. What els would they be good for!!!!
1943 AAF parachute ration looking a bit more scrumptious tbh
I love how Steve will take his time & really taste something, giving us the most more accurate description :)
"I was expecting more of this ration" "it's only 32 years old..."
I often think how we take history for granted, and how we would have never seen a stale prototype bacon bread crisp from a 1986 RLW 30 if it weren’t for his passion for mre’s
I wanna live on MREs for a month just for the experience.
Been there, done that.
You’ll probably shit your brains out and vomit violently after about the first two weeks.
Me too
Sounds expensive
Just buy instant coffee and crackers
I always feel bad when I see Steve is disappointed due to it's poorly preserved contents especially when it's as rare and expensive as this ration, but I still enjoy the MRE videos whether they are edible or not and it's well worth the documentation!
I love the videos!
I like how you told us how much it cost you. The price of these always intrest me
Thank you very much Steve for all the effort you put in your videos and all the money spent on something you love and share with the world.
With Each MRE He Consumes, He Becomes Stronger.
Thanks for showing us the most rare of MREs. I have tried watching the other channels, and yours, and Emmy are the two I can watch again and again. The history you provide with these make is so much more than just a tasting, or all-purpose review. And thanks for telling us what it cost, as an added bonus of interest. Idk, after I saw you eat 100 year old rations, I thought there was nothing you won't eat. Do you know you STILL, to this day, take the cake across RUclips as to being the only man to eat that level of revolting, and live to upload another day? People still talk about it.
Whats the best current MRE ?/ 2018-2020, French, Russia , Italian, ? I want to hold a Christmas MRE party with Japanese candy box for desert, everybody gets a number and then blind choice of MRE, perhaps 2 people share the big Russian like offerings.
STEVE if you had a diner party, what countries would you pick ?
