Appointment of Timpson is one of the very best things I have heard from Starmer. Absolutely agree that probably 2/3 of the people in prisons should not be there. Many of them are people with learning difficulties/disabilities and mental health problems. Punishment does not help people learn how to be part of the society we expect them to contribute to posituvely when they are released. People go on about the concrete council monstrosities, but the quality of so many of these new builds are absolutely dire, not just aesthetically but in terms of the actual construction, sprawl, workmanship and literal structural stability. The whole construction industry has been incentivised over decades to be as cost-cutting and negligent as possible, and skills have degraded with it. I really hope Labour doesn't just call on these cowboy corporate developers. I 100% would prefer state built housing, but if they really are allergic to public housing, I hope at the very least they form new public/private shared corporations with majority public stakes, procurement, negotiations, local apprenticeships, warranties, and muscular legal enforcement of duties.

The field is in an area where loads of people don't have gardens and if it was built on it would become a major flood risk (it already is one so that is a big problem). I was surprised and shocked to hear Michael Walker say its 'ridiculous' that local communities will resist the destruction of 'empty' fields from faceless housing estates built by the private sector, which will of course depend on home ownership and 4 & 5 bedroom houses for their profits. Meanwhile the majority of households in the UK already live in under occupied houses, second homes lie empty, rents are sky high, and we are in a climate, biodiversity and ecological crisis. This reliance on big business hardly differs from the Tories and has not yet solved the housing crisis -- but will instead increase inequality, promote expansionism and destroy nature.
Ironically, while you celebrate the success of the Nouveau Front Populaire in holding back the far right, and the Independents and Greens in our own election, this laissez faire attitude tramples all over the progressive agenda that helped them to this success.

Definitely a shock considering the ‘Far right’ got the most votes but the least amount of seats in parliament. Almost as though the bureaucracy simply didn’t allow for the democratic process to function correctly, it gets messy when there are paper ballots....
It’s like labor’s win in the UK, less votes than Corbyn in 17’ and 19’, but apparently those were abysmal failures but the latest election was a resounding success. Interesting how media paints failure and success.

buying a house is not all what it cracks up to be. We felt like slaves to the state. Also, I don't agree building on the green belt. As well as people I care about threatened species. The list is many. Of course there has to be a happy medium and compromise+ studies. We cannot abandon nature just like that. We have eco systems. I am not a nimby btw. With the extra houses of course, you have to supply additional services like drs surgeries, school's, school teachers etc. My husband worked in construction and he came across many places and big houses owned by rich people not being lived in because they lived abroad. I think we need to look at what waste land we have too. 3story houses might be a good idea.More houses less land. The drainage system needs to be looked at too. We need to get that in order before housing. It's crazy.

Another great show, thank you. I'm in France at the moment and it's been really interesting seeing what's going on here. On the issue of the national govt in the UK building more social housing and infrastructure generally, govt has lost the legal contracting, design, engineering and construction expertise it once had between the late '40s and '80s under neoliberal and austerity policies which therefore requires rebuilding the civil service over many years in the UK to 'do stuff' - I'm all for it but don't know about Labour under Starmer. To its credit the Albanese govt in Oz has been doing this to some extent after years of conservative rule and their contracting out a huge proportion of core govt responsibilities but there's no appetite for rebuilding infrastructure project implementation and construction capabilities in Oz or the UK it would seem.

Houses though are built by individuals as well as by developers. Planning authorities specify a house's design, build and materials as well as holding a veto over the siting of a new build. Planning authorities have withdrawn from public site the guidance they used to publish on what they allow and what they don't. The citizen is obliged to seek their permission by trying to fit their own idea into the authority's online procedure. The authority will not meet an applicant nor will they speak on the phone. One is allowed only email contact with a non decision maker.
Alternative and DIY housing should be allowed and not stopped. They approve some dreadful builds, poisonous materials, poor designs, dull building.

Agree - Michael's (& Bastani when he's on) opinion on planning is often generalised and verges on authoritarianism. From my own experience planning issues are contextualised in the specifics of place, hence why it is often better to assess on individual merits, rather than just a centralised decision making.
That's not to say planning process shouldn't be reformed in England as it's about making better decisions. I think there are opportunities to democratise the planning system, where ordinary local people can decide and factor in national interests, local interests, energy/housing/transport strategies as well as addressing inequalities etc.
Worth remembering it's England they are talking about too, especially when it comes to onshore wind farms - Scotland been building onshore windfarms over past 10 years. And if Novara had done their homework on this they would see it's not just planning that stopped onshore wind farms being built in England but also financial incentives like the Tories pulling feed in tariffs.
