Please don’t call sandabs mini halibut because people will mistake an actual baby halibut as a sandab and take it home which is illegal and hurts the halibut population 😨
Your videos are becoming very famous(!!!). RUclips has added many commercials after your videos(!!!) I has become accustom to watching and enjoying video after video without commercials(!!!). That is the price of success(!!!) Congratulations(!!!) You will reach one million subscribers soon(!!!) R. Thompson Jacksonville, Florida March 6, 2020
I can't get enough of your videos :D Not only you make me hungry, but love that type of videos. It's really inspiring what you can do with resources you gathered yourself! It's 10 times more interesting to see, how you get the ingridients yourself instead of buying them. It's the whole process I love.
Outdoor Chef Life inspiring too, I’m moving out to the west coast next year and already am looking for tide pool foraging spots near where I’ll be living!
my personal best lingcod, 24 pounds, I caught in a tidal pool about the size of a small car, back in 1988, I just jumped in, it was quite a wrestling match, in Westport, just north of Ft. Bragg, CA
Damn Taku!!! Makin me hungry 😋. Born n raised in hawaii. But now living in Vegas. I use to catch a lot of those but never knew it was good eating those mini halibut aka sand fish until I saw your video. But the wok looks nice I need one of those. Aloha
I think they have them in Hawaii because I used to walk around where a river came out to the ocean in Punalu'u on the windward side of Oahu and it was pretty common (and funny!) to feel one of those slip out from under my foot.
They indeed FCKIN DELICIOUS its so fragrant (yes... fragrant, not fishy), marinated easily, and the meat... ohh its so soft n flaky Such a dreamy fish Unluckily, there is not many of them sold in my town (im from Indo btw)
Well, Sanddab are used for live bait when Ling Cod fishing and we try to bring up as many as we can on the Subiki rig to fill the bait well. this time of year the Dabs are often the target fish when on the combo trips. Dabs first then go pull the crab pots. Dabs are a fantastic eating fish and offered at a lot of high-end restaurants. They are better when battered and broiled but frying is quicker and easier. Anyway, an excellent table fish. So easy to catch so I never go out on the Dab and crab combo trips.
Dabs, small but delish! We caught and cooked them the same way in Scotland. Just snipped off the fins and so easy to bone on your plate. So good with a squeeze of lemon. Enjoyed your video.
Lots of people target sanddabs down here in SoCal. Especially out of Ventura and around Catalina. They pull them in by the thousands. Good eats for sure.
I love that fresh sauce you made but the only other thing I think I would add is a clove or two of fresh finely minced garlic. I'm sure your garnish is great by itself but fresh garlic has always added that little bit of extra pungent flavor for me. Thanks for sharing and while I don't have access to fresh sand dabs, which looks absolutely amazing, I'll try your fresh garnish on other kinds of fried fish very soon.
OUTSTANDING! excellent video. good cheffing!!! love the cilantro mix with the fish sauce on top!! honestly, made my mouth water...lol subscribed!!! thank you keep em coming!
"Knife is Life" There was a local Japanese grocery store (Mitsuwa Marketplace) that was relocating and they were having a closing sale with everything 25% off. I remember they had a few knives made in Japan on sale. They were from $60-$120 +25% off. Looking at your video makes me regret not buying a few of them while they were on sale. with that being said, my all time favorite knife has to be my Nakiri, hands down. that was a smart set up. dope!!
I've only had sand dabs once but it was amazing!! I had it in Monterey, Ca at the Old Fisherman's Grotto. They catch them right off of the dock there and cook them up. Soooo good.
No Daily limit on sandabs. I use to fish for them off Stillwater cove after rockfishing. The easiest way to clean them is to use scissors. Fry them until the bone is crispy and eat them whole. They reside deep and on sandy 120 FOW.
Hey Taku! Fun fact about green onions, if you only chop the green part you can save the white stalks and put them in a cup/mason jar/even a water bottle with enough water to cover about half the stalk and you can easily grow new and fresh green onions in as little 1-3 weeks
That sauce looks good. One of my favorite fish to eat. Catching them is more like work than fishing. There are so deep, usually about 300 plus feet, and you use such a heavy weight, 1 to 2 pounds, you don't reel in just one or two at a time. I usually use 10 to 12 hooks, little strips of squid for bait, and I usually have 2 gangions set up. Send one to the bottom, wait a few minutes, 5 to 10 at the most, and reel them in. You lay them out on the deck, unsnap them from the swivel, snap on the other already baited up gangion, and send that one to the bottom and set it up. You then unhook your fish, put them in a bucket, put squid strips on the hooks and lay that out. Then its time to reel in your fish, and repeat the process. The least I have ever caught in one day is 105 the most 268. Fast and easy to clean, sweeter than halibut, and if you like to catch fish to eat, one of the best deals in sportfishing. You can fry them, use just about any sole recipe, or even deep fry them until they are crisp and eat them like big chips, bones and all. Yummy. I need to go fishing.....
Dear Outdoor Chef Life, i really like watching your videos on how you catch your own seafood and cooking them afterwards. I hope that in the future during the cooking phase, you will be adventurous to try out different ways of cooking from different countries. Maybe squid ink pasta or chilli crabs etc.
What my friend and I do with a small party of people is get a few dozen of them and fillet the meat off just like you would a halibut. Then deep fry the fillets just like you did and also fry the bones as well. In doing that we get fish bone crackers and 4 pieces of fried fillets.
If you go sanddabbing again, try leaving the rig in the water even after you set the hook on the first one. Continue setting the hooks until you don't get any more bites. Then, bring up the whole lot at one time...
This video was legit brother. We have been catching these little guys for a couple weeks now and had no idea most of the fish was edible. Thank you my friend for the catch and cook video. We'll see ya down the road!
That sauce is what South East Asian folks use for everything. My version is garlic, thai peppers, shallots, msg, sugar/palm sugar, fish sauce, lime/lemon juice, basil/thai basil and coriander/cilantro. More heat the better tasting the suace is. Goes good on about everything.
I was skeptical until I saw the bones pull out. Then it looked really tasty! Those are two toe's favorite bait for ling cod when heads out to his Fish locker...
Perfect as usual , love how you cook the fish , ironically targeting smaller fish , which my kids love to fish for (smaller fish) and that cilantro salsa/ pepper is spot on, I love that type too. Hopefully you get to use that rod on more traveling trips and that baitrunner reel
Taku, thanks for another great video! I always caught sand dabs and I always throw them back. Next time I will keep a few so that I can try them. I always hear how good they taste. Corn starch over flour, thanks for the tip!!! Looking forward to your next video;
Last time I went on a charter, a lot of people were catching sand dabs and they were just tossing them back and going home empty handed. I started collecting all of them and went home with quite a few. Fried them up with some panko and shredded coconut. They were delicious!
@@shitboxoffroad Could have something to do with cooking times or something. Maybe I just got lucky and hit the right point where the meat was soft and flaky, but the spine was still rigid.
🤤🤤. Great sauce with steak as well. I add tamarind powder to mine. My brother makes it with tomatoes over fried fish. Awesome vid. You should hit up some crappie soon. Great pan fish to fry up as well. Tight lines!
Some small fish are even tastier than the more popular big ones, especially if you can fry them whole and small bones melt during the cooking process. As I can't eat spicy peppers (medical reasons), I'm using green dill and garlic flavored oil for the salad, it's different but still complements the fish very well.
I had sand dabs on my honeymoon in Catalina. The waitress said the only thing they brought in fresh today Sand Dabs. So I ordered that and it was delicious.

okay dokay! Thanks!
Laying here at 5:30 in the morning, haven't slept yet, now I'm hungry as HELL!!
BeowWulf mines better
BeowWulf your profile actually scared me I thought there was a bug on my iPad
BeowWulf omg I hate that profile so much!
A little tip fishing for dabs, when you get bit just keep it in the drift until they all load up. You'll be reeling up fully loaded with dabs.
Outdoor chef life is the bees knees bruh...gonna be getting a roll up knife kit here soon...keep up the good stuff...

I’m glad people you used that sauce. We used that’s sauce for a lot of our dishes. Garlic would make it even more better.
I can’t share this channel with enough people, it’s such good content 👍🏼

Easy and quick. Love it. Gonna make this one day but with red onions in the salsa. Most of the sand dab recipes I've seen are just butter poached.
Another stellar video! The crunch when you bit into the fish was awesome!

They look like the size of a bluegill or perch. Looks delicious.
Wonder if they could be fixed this way, after scraping off the scales....? 🤔
Theyre kinda gross ngl
They indeed FCKIN DELICIOUS its so fragrant (yes... fragrant, not fishy), marinated easily, and the meat... ohh its so soft n flaky

They are, they're really nice with butter and garlic/wine sauce.
@@gus473 He said, the scales are so small they come off when he washes them.
Get me every time... after i watch I'm starving for some fresh seafood.
Almost see through little guys! Food looked delicious! That Comb fish looked cool! Awesome video!

What a coincidence! We're actually going on a crab and sanddab fishing trip this Saturday! Nice video, Taku👍
Ive been watching your videos to pass time and I throughly enjoy them! New subscriber
Hey, I loved this vid as the fish was basically consumed whole without any leftover, not even any fins, very sustainable. Keep it up Taku!
Lots of people target sanddabs down here in SoCal. Especially out of Ventura and around Catalina. They pull them in by the thousands. Good eats for sure.
You can also add diced tomatoes to that sauce as well! I have never seen anyone on RUclips make that sauce but I make it all the time haha
Nothing special about lime and fish sauce lol
Looks good! I like to add palm sugar to take away the sharp acidity and a little lime zest.
thanks Taku for another great video!!!

I love sand dab. Easy to catch off the LA waters. Most fish markets sell them also

I just realized that Jocelyn is down with the cooked fish now. When did that change?
She likes it when it's crispy!
Hi, chef for life. You have catch and cooking at same time. Hard working man. Like all your video from Saipan near Guam. Cheers.

Sheesh that looks delicious. I think I can handle making this. That sauce looked refreshing.
I love sand dabs, a local restaurant in Fresno in the central valley serves them and they’re super good. Keep up the content.
What restaurant is that?
David it’s called Bella pasta trattoria and it’s next to black pepper in Herndon and palm. I believe the dish is called sand dabs and risotto.

Don't eat any seafood but here I lay watching every video you post ❤
The crunch is so satisfying 🔥
I've had parmesan crusted Alaskan sand dabs at a seafood house in San Diego. They are as tasty as flounder or halibut.
I’m going this weekend! Also crabbing too!
looks as delicious as olive flounder(hirame). nice!
I think it will be more appropriate to call it flounder than mini halibut
either way, how you cooked it look so delicious!
I love the ever day post keep up the good work
That would be great with some Thai sticky rice! Looks great!
Wow that sounded crispy! And followed your IG! :D Another great video - thank you both!

I didn't know we had sand dabs! I get those deep fried at Ranch 99 all the time.
appreciate the 4k quality uploads recently!!
I first heard of Sand Dabs watching the odd Couple. I'll never forget hearing Felix unger order it.
In the office season there is a couple of boats that go out every once in a while and target sand dabs. I don't think there is a limit on them.

When I go fishing, we catch sand dabs and then use the whole 5 inch sand dab for bait. Normally a massive lingcod eats it.
I'm trying next time I go out
Where do you hook it from?
I've had it before fried as well, caught them off Catalina island. was actually really good. You should do a blue perch catch n cook
