This is why my family was a (mostly) NBC family in the mid 80's. So many classic shows that we loved. This is also why Brandon Tartikoff is probably the absolutely best TV programmer/executive ever. That man is responsible for years and years (even beyond his time there) of NBC success.
1984 & 1985 was the ratings peak and height of NBC. With "The Golden Girls", "227", "Cosby Show", "Punky Brewster" just to name a few, NBC hit #1 in Network ratings. Brandon Tartikoff WAS King!
The lead singer for this rendition of "Let's All Be There" is Jake Holmes, the same guy who sung the CBS "Great Moments" campaign from 1982-83, and also the "Zack the Lego Maniac" jingle from 1988 (just to name a few).
The jingle is so damn catchy! NBC in the 80's on Thursday and Saturday nights. I remember watching The Cosby Show, Different World, Family Ties, Golden Girls, 227 and more. The funny thing is back in the day there were actually things to watch on Saturday nights.
I was so glad to be apart of this TV season, since I was born on the very week that NBC telecasted Super Bowl XX (20) on late January 1986, just 4 months before NBC's current peacock came to town.
I remember watching every episode of The Cosby Show every Thursday @ 8:00 p.m. as a child. My mom would be corrowing my hair for school the next day when it would come on. We also recorded many original episodes on VHS.
Why was TV better back then? Where I lived cable wasn't avalible. We had about six chanels. Now I have Dish network with over 200 chanels and can't find anything to watch. The big 3 networks back in the day put out great programing. Why can't they do it now?
It is also interesting to note that the reason NBC did not pick up St Elsewhere for a seventh season was not due to raitings. It was a contract dispute with the production company, MTM.
In the 80's NBC could not be beat on any progamming. I just re-discovered "Cheers" again thanks to HDNet. There should be a cable channel that shows nothing but shows from the late 70's and 80's.
NBC hit Top Spot with amazing new hits like The Golden Girls and 227 back then at the Expense of CBS whose ratings went backwards with so many Flops thought the latter half of the 80's.
That's because CBS was showing shows traditionally caterting to older viewers. CBS should have jumped on the young band wagon. They had their hits, but they came out with "Tour of Duty", " Jake and the Fatman" "Newhart" " The Oldest Rookie", " Coming of Age" seriously CBS?! This was the 80s, the MTV era, and their demographic was 90 year old viewers!
@Digifan23 I'm with ya! Did you know that this era we're discussing came after the last time NBC did the same thing? Before Cosby, Cheers and Family Ties were good but they weren't shows that could anchor the whole network. They had crap like Supertrain and Manimal going for them. It was in '84 when Cosby appeared on Thursdays, alongside Knight Rider and and A-Team on weekends, that people stood up and took notice. Then the next year came Miami Vice and their prayers were essentially answered.
Despite never scoring better than 49th in the ratings, St Elsewhere seems very prevalent in the affiliate promo. I guess this was a time when quality programing was appreciated.
Saturday Mornings saw two new cartoons join The highly successful stalwarts of The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks with the debuts of Disney's Gummi Bears and It's Punky Brewster!, the animated spin-off of Punky Brewster.
Not necessarily; NBC actually stayed #1 in the ratings until the end of the 1998-99 season, and since then, the network's ratings have declined dramatically.
This is my point. It seems that TV today regards raitings as the key factor in deeming a shows worth, even if it means filling the time slots with repugnant reality shows.
yeah i know. Its was a stupid idea when they added Teen NBC and it had screwed up Saturday morning cartoons. They still do have a Saturday morning cartoon block again first time since 1991-1992 season, its called qubo.

The 80's rocked !!!

In 1989, SBT, Brazilian broadcaster, has a sticker like this, and the result was very nice.
The lead singer for this rendition of "Let's All Be There" is Jake Holmes, the same guy who sung the CBS "Great Moments" campaign from 1982-83, and also the "Zack the Lego Maniac" jingle from 1988 (just to name a few).

This was the golden age of tv - it did not get any better - the level of quality is unmatched
Of all the Thurday shows in 1985, Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers & Night Court, my favorite was Night Court. It was freakin hilarious!!! Loved Bull.
NBC was at its strongest during the mid-to-late 80's.
Since 1985 this inspired Silvio Santos doing the vignette of your station in 1989, the SBT. In search of RUclips look for "vignette SBT 1989".
Aww I miss TV from the 80's.
Those promos are better than any whole show nowadays.
Quality show after quality show.
what a lineup of truly all-star shows and talent! compare that to today's excuse for programming...no comparison.
I was so glad to be apart of this TV season, since I was born on the very week that NBC telecasted Super Bowl XX (20) on late January 1986, just 4 months before NBC's current peacock came to town.
What a Phenomenon it is!
This was the first time in almost a decade that NBC was out of last place. The last time NBC finished second was the 1974-75 season.
Now THIS is a memorable promo. ^^
I was only 4 years old! NBC used to be good up until 2000.
St. Elsewhere was a frequent Emmy winner..and Denzel Washington was by then a movie star. Two reasons right there to heavily tout the show!
Wow, that's gotta be the best quality video from the 80s I've ever seen on RUclips! Good upload.
Golden Girls and 227 were new in 1985, and in 1986, L.A. Law, Matlock and ALF were the latest shows.
This makes me miss my childhood, I was 10! NBC had some awsome shows back in the day. What the hell happened, TEAM CONAN!!!!!!
I remember watching every episode of The Cosby Show every Thursday @ 8:00 p.m. as a child. My mom would be corrowing my hair for school the next day when it would come on. We also recorded many original episodes on VHS.
That was a powerhouse season of shows NBC had there. They downplayed classics like The Golden Girls! Too much awesomeness with their other shows.

I remember at the start of this season settling down for the Saturday night line-up and was like "What the heck happened to 'Double Trouble'??"
It is also interesting to note that the reason NBC did not pick up St Elsewhere for a seventh season was not due to raitings. It was a contract dispute with the production company, MTM.
LOVE this... so many memories! Miss Cheers, Frasier, A-team, Magnum, Simon and Simon... everything today is crap.
Michael Pannoni Yeah... just the whole time period I guess.
+Michael Pannoni They are now owned by NBC, who now own the entire Universal TV library
Its funny that "Let's all be there" was NBC's peak, but "Come Home 1986-1987" was the beginning of thier decline.

@Cjl99 That comment was so good, I had to give a thumbs up.
I saw the old NBC Proud N Peacock logo into the Saturday Night Live Justin Timberlake Five-Timers Club skit on television.
Not necessarily; NBC actually stayed #1 in the ratings until the end of the 1998-99 season, and since then, the network's ratings have declined dramatically.
Great promo
Lol Why am I here? I was born in '94 XD
@Baltimoreman78 nope. 85. Marla joined it the year Jefferson's aired it's 11th and final season.
I liked that 1985-86 graphic and was it 227's title card for it's first season or just for the pilot?
The Misfits of Science logo looks almost EXACTLY like the Masters of the Universe logo.
Yeah, it's was like it got lost somewhere and no one bothered to look for it.
It wasn't necessary to post this seeing that it may still be on RUclips, but thank you anyway.
This is my point. It seems that TV today regards raitings as the key factor in deeming a shows worth, even if it means filling the time slots with repugnant reality shows.

agreed, today..NBC let's not be there... :-/
Sometimes, it's OK not to talk.
shagg carpet ,curtis mathis floor model television ,no cable tv rocked in the 80s
This song is too catchy! What happened NBC? C'mon now!
NBC had never prior to this season ever dominated ratings and haven't really ever since with the obvious exceptions of Friends & Seinfeld.
Does ANYONE happen to have the promo from this campaign of the brunette with a French accent taking a pie to her face?
I didn't see any WWE Superstars at the time in this promo. Was this before Saturday Night's Main Event? Do you have any NBC promos with wrestlers?
@Digifan23 Why, just because you weren't there then? Jealous.
NBC NEEDS TO TRY HARDER MAN!!!!!!!! But seriously, NBC was the SHIT back in the 80's!
Didn't they do one of these where they used a brunette with a French accent and they hit her with a cream pie?
@Cjl99 Where should we be? BBC? Yeah reich. Big smile!
@kikoun86
They have to fill the time-slots with something! So...thats what they got...."filler".
1984 & 1985 was the ratings peak and height of NBC. With "The Golden Girls", "227", "Cosby Show", "Punky Brewster" just to name a few, NBC hit #1 in Network ratings. Brandon Tartikoff WAS King!
Don't forget Cheers and Family Ties
just and f.y.i. 'Punky Brewster' was never a big hit like the others and never made the top 10 or even beat other shows in the same time slot
