Rushed shower after school, scoff some Sainsbury's oven pizza, grab a Stella from under the stairs, a spray of deodorant, out the door and quick-step to the tube station feeling nervous and excited about the rave to come. Bagleys / SW1 / Coliseum / Charlie Brown's / Club Space / Coronet / Chocolate Bar / Emporium / Leisure Lounge / Gass Club. (Never made it to Eros Enfield, Faces Gants Hill, Destiny Watford or Purple E3!) Night lights of London city twinkling. Scary queuing in the cold - might get ID'd; dress code might be well strict. Fellows looking dapper and serious, ladies looking sexy and serious. 1998 though. Who needed a mobile phone?
It's all that in the second paragraph that put me off the garage scene back in the day. I used to go to the crusty hippy acid techno raves - no ID checks, no dress code, nobody judging you for what you looked like, how you danced, or what you were on. It's only with the wisdom of hindsight that I realise I had missed out on some bangin' tunes and good vibes.
You might have missed out on some 1990s garage vibes but not on the tunes because here we have You Tube! Click of a button. 1990s was a whole Saturday afternoon missioning it to record shops, combing the bargain bins or having a £7.99 vinyl 'lottery' - 'Can I listen to this boss?' ... 'Sorry mate'... oh well, it's a _Nice & Ripe_ ... just hope it's a banger ... The good old days were wicked in their way but so was youth. Now is also good in its way. Click, bait, style, click, bait bait style!
Big up the Mission FM 90.6 crew!! This one is a pirate radio anthem. Good times locking into radio and hearing this play and going to the raves busting mad moves to this. Big up all my old school ravers.
Damn straight... wish I could go back 14-16 years and grow up in woolwich all again with this stuff on pirate radio all through the summer, chilling in the sun. Instead I grew up and the music stayed there but not in my heart. Its came with me :)
Raw Flex 103.6 FM warming up Woolwich 24-7, all through the 2000s. Sweet smell of malting hops (Tetley's brewery) in the air. Big up 3-Base, Jay Steppa, Easy B and Sir Funky.
Had this on a dreem teem radio 1 essential mix about 2000ish,it was easy best track on it.didn't know til now it was Steve Gurley of foul play though.legendary producer
Good Music Like This Is Timeless And This Brings Back All Them Good Memories From Back In The Day. 2021 Going Into 2022 But Still Massive! U.K. Garage Music Best.❤
the latest tune i hav of steve gurley is his remix of keep on, dat was about 2001-02 since den i aint heard nothing from him, he as also made a few tunes with jason kaye back in da day.
@keet81 theres loads of lovely garage stuff out there. tyr gabriel - roy davis jnr, mj cole b sincere etc etc etc here are a few dubsteppy ones... truth - lost at sea and some other stuff lung - after life cludroot - dulcet zomby - tears in the rain
Mmmmkuy lets not freak out here this producer was one of the "pioneers" of dubstep even though this is garage or "UK Garage" whatever floats your boat. This type of music played in nightclubs which stayed and evolved into mainstream dubstep.
dubstep aint got that 2-step drum pattern basically. listen to something like 'skream - midnight request line' to hear the different rhythmic patterns.
@DjSprinks890 I also play a bit of Jungle and Hardcore too,got quite a few vinyl! May I ask what country you are from? As it may be you are confused with the whole US/UK House and Garage thing,U know,I say Tomato,U say Tomato and all that Lol....I can also provide you with many examples of vocal Garage and Drum and Bass so you can see the difference or you can just seach them your self^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ :)
@G3AK09 Well, as with most genres the definitions change as they develop, so even though most people would agree that these are the roots, they would also be hard pressed to classify this as strictly dubstep.
does anyone know the track that features Goya - Getting off on you hook. It might be a Steve Gurley production as the sound was his style but could be wrong.
This ones a bad Dubstep beat! Pmsl To all the kids here, click some more of the links to your right>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> and educate yourself in the music that gave birth to and still dons Dubstep IMO,UK Garage!! @stonedjunglist nah your wrong its drum and bass yeah i went to this club and this black man told me it was drum bass and he was wearing a one nation t shirt on !!!
@007tron Lol I'm sorry mate but there is so much wrong with that statement,I don't know where to begin! This is Garage,UK Garage to be precise! DnB is about 20/30 BPM faster and typically has few vocals. What u heard at early raves was most lightly early House,Acid House and early Hardcore, some of which had a similar BPM to Garage.I have been a House & Garage DJ for about 8 years and have listened to all of them for as long as I can remember! Lol Wiki Garage and DnB for Documented fact

Steve Gurley is the unsung hero of UK dance music. Produced amazing jungle and pioneered the 2-step garage sound.
Yeah I loved his Jungle track. He's a legend.
Steve Gurley in jungle was called _Rogue Unit_
From legend to this crap.
also, for me, the best drum architect in UKG ever, even ever-so-slightly past El-B and Noodles.
Not forgetting Wookie.
