it's practically nothing (ok, not expensive) for a common family, for a place like this. this house looks more like bytovka (change house), not a genuine village house unfortunately, but will do.
in Russia and Belarus you still can buy an old-school house (60-s and even earlier), with a 'warm' and 'cold' (for animals) parts. even in a village that once bustling with life but now has like 5-10% of houses left. and still there will be cheap electricity and roads. the prices started from like 1k$.
here are of course a lot of questions about their place, I hope we'll see and learn more in future

Congratulations from 75 year old mechanical engineer from Rockford, Illinois, USA. I was born in Poland and came to US at age 29 with no money, no skills. After working hours I did remodeled 3 houses, build 2 new. You have fantastic place. It is flat, so easy to build on and have garden, I imagine greenhouse there. Hi guys! I was very encouraged to watch your video about your new home. Two years ago our family moved from Canada to Russia for good and we moved to a remote village where there are only 25 people, with the 5 of us that is - two adults and three kids. The folks from the neighbouring villages still wonder why we moved so deep in the woods with the kids, to a hectare of land, with loads of renovations and work in the garden, they told us when we just moved that we have made a big mistake by making this choice. Well, it is hard to explain to these folks why we much prefer to live further away from big cities, but I am always rejoicing when I see other repatriates who do the same thing because I know that it is the way to go for our families and for the better future. Too many words to express how glad I am that you guys are doing what you are doing and are so happy about it!!! We feel the same way and we wish you all the best in your work that is to come. I wish we lived closer, so we could become family friends!!! We live in the middle belt of Russia. I watch your videos when they come by my sight and I am very proud of what you do!!!

В Слюдянке достатточно мягкий микроклимат, весна с задержкой но и осень наступает поздно, много осадков, снега, но и много солнца - в конце концов это юг Сибири, гораздо южней по широте, чем Москва - это примерно на широте Белгорода, 51 параллель, посмотрите! .

Danny, I'm really happy for you and Ksenya! This is a magnificent lot! You'll never get tired of looking out your window :)) I do advise you to call on a Land engineer to make an official map of your property before you build a fence. This map and land marks (sorry, don't know a proper name for this) will be certified by the local government, and will be your shield of steel in case any of your neighbours want to claim some of your land. I've gone through such an ordeal over a few meters of my fence with my neighbour, you don't want to know! It cost me more money than the fence itself! And one other thing - when you do your landscape planning and flatten out your lot, be sure to provide a smooth rising of the ground level away from the nearby river, about 3 centimeters to 1 linear meter, this will help to drain excess moisture from your grounds. And don't throw away the upper layer of your soil - its very fertile!!! Just turn it over, let the weeds grow again and cut them off a few times during the Summer season. And early Spring next year you can seed your lawn and plant a garden. Its going to be an awesome property!!! Good luck and God speed!

Да, неприятно что началось с тяжбы с соседом - очень частая история, увы! Участок явно пустовал и соседи в таких случаях часто внаглую залазят на него своими постройками и заборами и потом уже все искренне считают "своим"...

I started watching this video in Italy, in the back seat of the car which Timothy was driving. Then we continued watching in Slovenia, when we arrived at the AirBnB. Now we have been rewatching it from our home in London. The plot and the scenery around are so splended. Timothy wants one too. And he is good at handy work. Glad you are putting up a banya. Remember about eating and sleeping room in there. Every true Russian muzhik must experience sleeping in the banya, passed out with his mates from heavy drinking, not allowed in the house! LOL

I know you want to just have septic, but I highly suggest you build a new outhouse in another part of your property. We put in a new septic to replace the original log crib that many old original Alaska homesteads have, but I will put in an outhouse as a backup. Freeze and other issues can affect your modern septic up at our latitudes. My family in Ecuador have similar setups in the jungle and in the Andes, too. Before building anything major, it’s a good idea to hire a surveyor to clarify the boundaries of the site. Otherwise, it would be very sad to demolish what was built.

Купили мы дачу заброшенную, лет 20 как никто ею не занимался, всё соседи привыкли воспринимать как продолжение своих участков: то посадили цветы и смородину, то складировали доски, на прудик кто то водил пастись гусей!
