Animals is forty or so minutes of sustained anger, and the ‘stripped back’ production suits that sentiment. I’ve flipped between albums for years trying to decide which is my favourite. Animals has been consistently sifting to the top as I get older. The original came out about a week before my 18th birthday. I’ve listened to it more times than I can remember. I’ve only listened to the remix once and I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. I don’t feel that it’s polished the album so much as revealed a few previously hidden sounds…

    • @rft2001
      @rft2001 Год назад +4

I found it lacking. It takes away the magic and mystery. It is overly bright, takes away some of the dynamic range (compared to the original lp and cd) and omits key sounds which made the record sound like it was beamed in from some other dimension. I'll stick with my originals. You can't improve upon perfection.

    • @chrisknowlton9460

Another thing about the album is it's so relevant today where people are being herded and manipulated by governments who want to take their human rights and freedoms. The disparity between the haves and have nots is increasing. The pressure to conform or be banished from the pack is rising.

    • @rft2001
      @rft2001 Год назад +2

@@chrisknowlton9460 I agree. So many of the concepts are universal. I would add that people are being manipulated not only by government but even more by political groups, capitalist corporations and the media. And yeah, so many people are conformists these days. There is so much black and white thinking and pressure to fit in to the pack. Hard time to be a free thinker .

Just listened to the remix 4 times and compared it w a US original press; i love the new mix but I can’t get over how loud the snare is and how quiet the solos are now. Sounds fantastic tho, but I think the darkness of the original is what gave it its angst

I was just thinking the same thing. I listened to the entire album through headphones and was amazed by the clarity and separation but yo7 are right… David Gilmours solo on Dogs seemed quiet in comparison to the original mix.

Nice up Mazzy. Battersea Power station is now a place with bars, restaurants and apartments. On 14 October next month it officially opens. It's had a new tube station for a little while. Interesting fact is my father worked on a wholesale flower stall in 9 Elms the year Animals came out. I think the modernity of the remix cover is a nod to the latest remix and the way the area has changed through massive investment. I will be purchasing it on cd. I thought 'Lapse' 2019 remix was spectacular. Looking forward to hearing the Animals one.

Yours is a considered and welcome review. Many reviewers either condemn the original or condemn the new remix. You have provided a great middle-way. I too believe the remix has lost some of the original's intended feel. But it also provides a higher-fidelity alternative for a different kind of experience. Both are valid and good to have. Cheers.

Great presentation! I never got into Animals until I heard the remix. And I don‘t usually like remixes of classic albums - I think the Beatles remixes take away from the music by bringing out ‚details‘ that were not intended to be upfront.
But with Animals I think the remix brings out MORE of the darkness because the impact is more powerful. It‘s more intense because the added clarity (in a good, non-Beatles way) makes the soundscape sparser, more lonesome if you will.
To my ears the original sounded kind of weak - sonically speaking. Especially the drums which benefit hugely from the remix I think. They are still ‚70s drums‘ - which is good - but the just sound and feel much better. And for all the direness and conflict - David Gilmour outdoes himself on this album which really says something. The guitars are absolutely killer!

I actually wasn't sure why I didn't like it at first. Not until I put on my original UK and I right off the bat I notice the differences between the two. I like how you described it. One could say I am intimately acquainted with the original recording, so I can already hear even the most subtle differences. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wanted to relax and get into it, so I had a bit of a spliff, bec PF only makes being high better - not the other way around.
I appreciate the clarity of the vocals (you can hear the layers and echoes very clearly). Richard and Nick are more in the forefront, really appreciate that as well.
David playing the fretless bass in Pigs (already funky af) sounds sublime, and Nick's drumming is what stands out the most, just brilliant.
I'd still choose to listen to the original over this, but it is definitely a sonic treat and worth revisiting.

Good review. Animals is for me one of my 5 best PF albums: M, TDSOTM, WYWH, A, TW (with Astronomy dominé, AHM suite, Set the control.. songs). With this remix, finally we have there the full sonic power of this fabulous album. EVERYTHING has more space, especially the percussion and bass which stand out more. So much the better, because don't we say that a good rhythm section goes through these 2 instruments?
My sound system is very happy to be able to give more colors, as if we had removed a deafening layer from this work.
Their Britania Row studio never delivered this album to its full potential.
I don't understand those who mention preferring the original version to this remix: the narrowness of its sound and the muffledness bring back as if we were listening to it in a cage instead of listening to it in a well-sounded room... but all tastes are in nature.
Dogs is for me one of their best songs with the superb solos of DG.

I feel the 2018 album certainly takes some punch out of Waters's bass, which I personally feel shortchanged by on Dogs, but the new sheen and clarity of some of the other instruments allows for a differently angled listening experience and fresh perspective. If you listen to the weekly syndicated radio show, “Floydian Slip,” it was reported that the 4 year hold up on releasing this album had to do with Roger Waters not liking the liner notes essay that was to be included in this release. So, they finally decided to release it without the liner notes.
Also, there is actually a Pink Floyd cover band called “Punk Floyd” that does punk rock cover versions of Pink Floyd songs. Much like “Dread Zeppelin” who does Reggae versions of “Led Zeppelin” songs.
I discovered them 10 years ago and their Punk Rock covers are pretty good if you can find them. They are still pretty obscure.

Little did we know it would be reformed 2 years later into an album, not sure if they ever announced anything about it? The highlight was 1st use of a large screen behind the band and played throughout DSOTM piece. Great show but filled with narcs there and throughout the tour so much so they apologized to their fans in Rolling Stone magazine. Your video inspired me to order the LP of the new (er, 2018) remix! And I also added the blu-ray surround sound disc, too, in my order. I have the 2011 remaster on CD and the original mix on vinyl from many years ago. I think I have enough Animals now!

Original is what we have used to, still waiting my lp but the little preview from spotify i can already tell it sounds the way it should have sounded in the first place. I will come back To that if im wrong

For the last 20 years or so, I’ve owned a Japanese produced CD of Animals which I’ve always loved. Been a long time actually since I heard anything like a red book of this.
I have the 5.1 of this on the way. I have two separate amps, so I can manipulate a little.
Concerns me a bit hearing reports that Gilmour’s guitar is pushed back on Dogs. I’ve listened on RUclips to the vinyl though and have heard all sorts of very welcome changes already. I’m good with different versions.

Hi Mazzy. You got me at gorgeous. Have no turntable so I may stick to my original CD. You need to keep it dark.... to keep the subject authentic. Great album that stands in the shadow of the masterpieces that came before and that mighty Wall. God bless and have a nice weekend

I'm waiting for the sacd to ship from my retailer but certainly a lot of thought has gone into the packaging on the record and usually P.F. don't charge the earth for these things unlike certain artists (Messres Stanley,Simmonds and co I'm looking atcha).
Currently on the 2016 for vinyl.
    Thanks for the video, Mazzy.

I bought the new remix but unfortunately mine was full of surface noise and pops, I was so pissed. I’m returning but this time I will exchange it for a cd version. I got feeling many of these pressings are bad. I see many people complaining.

Nailed it! You hear it the same way I do ! Hard rocking Pink Floyd album but my copy has static and snap crackle pop immediately at the beginning. Think I'm going to send it back and get the CD. I consider it a different listening experience but not better, some details brought out louder but not fond of the heavy Bass. I prefer the old mix, it seems to have more kick and rock feel to it. I also prefer the original album cover. Pink Floyd music suffers from Snap Crackle Pop and using paper sleeve, poor quality control. All vinyl manufacturers need to take lessons from blue note tone poet and blue note classic vinyl releases. They are dead silent, clean, centered flat as glass and properly packaged. One of the worst new pressings I just received was Neil Young toast. Extremely filthy with many fingerprints also. Loud pop and skip. Ragged edges with untrimmed loose vinyl creating debris. Ragged Center hole untrimmed with loose vinyl creating debris. And last but not least, it is a double album but they sent two of the same leaving me short one album. But at least it's an all analog recording in a anti-static sleeve! It's like somebody at the factory must hate Neil Young and purposely smearing fingerprints and dirt all over the album and packaging them wrong.

They’ve take the reverb off Roger’s vocals on “Pigs on the Wing” and it sounds better - dryer, more immediate and intimate, and fittingly vulnerable.

the new cover is brilliant...but...the original cover is essence, which i assume, correlates with the sound and the theme of each pressing....i like the 'muddy' quality of the original...as a huge fan of the book 'animal farm', the production fit perfectly over waters' vocals and rick wright's amazing keyboard skills....it's all about the essence stupid, and even a cover makes all the difference....peace always my friend...rocky

I think you summed up the sentiment of many "old school" Pink Floyd fans who were around in 1977 when "Animals" was first released. The remix sounds very good, but the emotion that made the original 1977 release so "biting" is missing in the remix.

I really like these remixes. Was there ever a similar remix of other albums like DSOTM and Wish you Were Here? I know they have been remastered but I'd love to hear remixes of all of those. I think I remember seeing somewhere that there were. Not sure if I imagined it though.

I love this better than the wall, all lower case by the way. This is way better. the wall is over played and commercialized by radio contracts…period. Sorry, but that’s how I feel about that. Pink Floyd from 1977 and back is my favorite period.

I have not listened to the remix yet, so I this is an untarnished opinion. There was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the original mix. I cringe at the thought of messing with a masterpiece, and in general, remixes of records we already know and love (I'm looking at you, Amused to Death) tends to be a mistake.
Having said that, I hope the new mix hits me with all the warmth, color and vibrancy of that first dose of psilocybin. ☮♥

  • @joeearles2654

For me there are pluses and minuses to the 2022 remix. I prefer the original vocals on Pigs on the Wing as the reverb gives them a wistful distance as opposed the up close sound of the remix. The guitars on Dogs sound great such as the sustained climactic note at the end which leads in to the power chord ending, it sounds as intended. The drums are really pumped up, maybe a little bit too much at times. The keyboards sound more focused and well defined but some of the desired atmospheric effect is lost. The best part about the remix is hearing previously hidden sounds. In short I think both versions are worth having.

Maybe combining the originals with the remix versions would sound good, if the tracks are both in the same time and of the same length. Easily enough done in Audacity. I might try it and see how it turns out
