fun fact: the device shown on 3:24 is a Multiplane, it's an old animation tool that was used back when animations were still hand drawn, one of the things it could be used for is the traveling tunnel effect from 2:59 to 3:19
also, a spanner is a type of wrench, the Fisher on 7:38 is holding a spanner.

I think you were on to something on how an artist's creation can destroy them. I'm a graphic artist and so often I go for hours on end working on pieces trying to get them "perfect" in my eyes. I'll skip meals and forget to drink just because I get so obsessive over trying to make the perfect art. Obessession and Perfectionism often go hand in hand in with art. (Which actually relates to bendy and the ink machine. The Angel is a character from the show named Alice and she came out of the ink machine "imperfect" when she was brought to real life, so she's destroying others to make herself "Perfect").

stupendium's spin on their bendy songs often focuses on poor working conditions and getting exploited by a larger company- starving artist, ink but no malpractice forms ect. also the masterpeice discarded thing can be tied to actors getting fired and replaced, which ties into your interpretation of it all

The best way to approach any song about Bendy and Ink Machine is to think of these things:
    1) Think about Animation, the tools needed to make them, and the skills necessary to do so.
    2) Think about what it means to "abandon a creation" and if those creations were characters........what would their "revenge" look like for abandoning them?
    3) Think of historical people like Walt Disney and Chuck Jones........and the people they interacted with, but also the sacrifices they had to make.........whether for good or for ill.

One of the things I really enjoy about Stupendium's Bendy and the Ink Machine songs are all the references and lines related to animation itself. Here's a few examples of it in this song, you may have gotten some of them while watching it.
"Giving you the willies as I'm stepping off my steamboat" is a reference to Steamboat Willie, a famous early animation from Disney
"Sing along to the bouncing ball" seems like a double reference. Sing-along versions of animated musicals often have a bouncing ball which highlights the current word in the song. However, the "bouncing ball" is also a term for one of the first animation exercises almost every animator learns.
"But a pal of mine" could be a reference to Palomino Blackwing pencils, commonly used in the animation industry

    • @sirapple589
      @sirapple589 2 года назад +8

Pal of mine is 100% a reference to the pencil. it's immediately followed with "with blackwings". The whole song is full of refernces to animation, if I remember correctly there's a great list of them in the original video's comment section.

    • @alex6027
      @alex6027 2 года назад +5

@@sirapple589 The "Pal of mine with black wings" lyric actually isn't in this song, if I recall. Its from Find The Keys. This song has "But a pal of mine wants you recalled" though

    • @Anastas1786
      @Anastas1786 2 года назад +6

Also, the bouncing ball used to mark the rhythm for a sing-along was first used in a series of cartoons from Fleischer Studios. It's old-school animation, just like the rest of the references.

Listening to you talk about the song not knowing about the game really interested me. I heard it first knowing everything about the game, and while I understood there must be a deeper meaning to the song I recognized first how it pertained to the story of Bendy and the Ink Machine. Hearing your points makes me feel like that's what The Stupendium wanted to portray in their music, and as I listen to this particular song almost daily I'm grateful for your refreshing perspective.

"Wurlitzer shame that your organs and limbs ..."
Wurlitzer is a company that survives to this day. These days they mostly make jukeboxes and vending machines, but back when Bendy and friends would've been in their prime, they also made _pipe organs,_ including the "theater organs" made to accompany silent movies as well as the fancy multi-instrument organs that produce the kind of music we generally think of as "fairground music", and also nickelodeons, (relatively) small coin-operated machines that played short films when you put a nickel in the slot and which were _also_ popular attractions at fairs, boardwalks, and carnivals.

  • @Nitro1000
    @Nitro1000 2 года назад +32

The game is about an evil (or more evil) version of the OG Walt Disney company. Through the use of black magic and human sacrifice they literally brought the characters to life. Henry was fired before all the black magic but he was the animator that designed all the characters. The deeper meaning in my opinion is be careful who you trust with your work because even Disney characters were used in WWII propaganda

There's actually some pretty cool old school animation references in this one.
The most obvious one is "give you willies as I'm crawling out ma steamboat".
That's a Steamboat Willie reference. One of the oldest animated pieces of entertainment out there, and the first ever appearance of Mickey Mouse in the public eye. That clip you tend to see in the little intro segments to Disney movies after the castle with the whistling Mickey Mouse? That's Steamboat Willie. At least it should be if memory serves.

I find it fun to think of this song in a creationist vs evolution sort of sense, with an animating god and it's animated humans. The humans have progressed to the point that not only have they recognized their origins as descendants of ancient lifeforms, but have also turned their back on their idea of a god.
You can see this most clearly in the Butcher Gang's verse, describing themselves as "crawling out of the sea foam" and "a monkey with a wrench". They're the creations of their supposed god that have come far enough to fight back against it in favor of their own scientific pursuits.
The chorus too adds to this: "If you thought that demons were your problem right now, well the angel's on the stage so pipe down."
They no longer have to worry about demons like hunger and predators, and instead focus on the angels; why and how they were created.
There's a lot more to this but I'll let you figure out the rest if you want to try rewatching with this lens.

    Boris! Meet your maker!
    Ah, I'll tell you later
It seems this scene has us careening down an elevator
Must have been dreaming to think we'd make a clean escape
I doubt that one machine here could make it past a regulator
Swear we never had this many levels, where's the excavator?
What's so scary 'bout a library and a record player?
Thought I'd find the angel in a basement more dilapidated
This is kinda tasteful, Alice tell me who's your decorator?
    I never make a lady wait, I guess you'd say that I'm a player
Angel wants a date and I would really hate to aggravate her
Boris, don't you worry, I would never let her separate us
    Told you, where'd you go?
Damn, guess I'd better go and save him
Alice thinks that hacking up my pal is gonna medicate her
Fallacy! The treatment that this gal would need is an eraser
Rap against an animator? Alice, get back on your paper
Rhyming on the multiplane, my lyrics work on several layers
If you thought that demons were your problem right now
Well the angel's on the stage so pipe down
If there are secrets that you want to find out
Hop on the ink machine and ride those pipes down
So you're on the path of the starving artist
But at the heart, well the art is heartless
Ever seen a masterpiece get discarded?
Start and depart for the art of darkness
Out of the deep dark depths below
Three ne'er-do-wells will avenge their souls
With a spanner and a wrench and a thirst to quench
Hi-ho, it's off to work we go
Heave-ho! Fisher's coming, crawling out the sea foam
Giving you the Willie's as I'm stepping off my steamboat
Left here by the gods and beheaded by a rod
I've some deadly black spots for the clod who left us below
Should have headed for the bread line
Never ever meddled wtih a pencil lead and bread lines
    Monkey with a wrench might
Thunk you in the head, Henry can you see the headlines?
Animator dead by an enemy he designed!
There once was an Angel who swallowed a spider
It wriggled inside her and out came the Striker
Who'd have thought your silly little villain for the children
Would be killing for your heroine, so let her win or die first
If you thought that demons were your problem right now
Well the angel's on the stage so pipe down
If there are secrets that you want to find out
Hop on the ink machine and ride those pipes down
So you're on the path of the starving artist
But at the heart, well the art is heartless
Ever seen a masterpiece get discarded?
Start and depart for the art of darkness
There's no need to be scared now
It's all the fun of the fairground
And I would say I'm on fair grounds
To take a little revenge now
    Everybody's heard of Bertram Piedmont
Because my work pertains a certain frisson
A hurtling free fall, disturbing demons
Are out of season so must you keep on?
Are you caught in a spin?
Well it's a shame that your organs and limbs
Will be lost in the ink, well it's awfully grim
Did you want to be him? Walter better man than you've ever been
It's a downward spiral, time you felt a
Little hell up in the Helter-skelter
No help or shelter, board the ride
Don't you know you've got to be this tall to die?
So sing along to the bouncing ball
Wave your flags and renounce these halls
You may have been sacked from this pantomime
But a pal of mine wants you recalled
So march along to the count of four
Astound at the scoundrel crowd you've drawn
Left stranded and damned to this mangled form
To abandon us here was an act of war
It's laughable to think you'll bring back the norm
We've ink, but no malpractice forms
"But Henry! You never gave a crap before?"
'Til we trapped you down 'neath the factory floor
Clap along to the rapturous score
Three rounds down and back for more
To find the keys in chapter four
Remind me, where've you heard that before?
If you thought that demons were your problem right now
Well the angel's on the stage so pipe down
If there are secrets that you want to find out
Hop on the ink machine and ride those pipes down
So you're on the path of the starving artist
But at the heart, well the art is heartless
Ever seen a masterpiece get discarded?
Start and depart for the art of darkness
Well I dropped in from the top and now I've got to block the
Monsters popping off of Nosferatu's rostrum
Preposterous that after this my Oscar's will be posthumous
I lived for my work but I died to stop them
Stationery should be stationary, shouldn't talk back
I need a shrink, I'm on the brink, the ink has fought back
Thought that the Apocalypse was supposed to live on horseback?
Screw that, deliverance was hidden in the Rorschach
    That's all folks
    Keep dreaming

When analysing "Angel's on the stage" part around the 4:30, you're talking about heaven and hell, creator and destructor. That's an interesting analysis. I didn't think of that meaning when watching it.
As pointed out in earlier verse, Alice Angel is the antagonist of chapters 3 and 4 of the game. So, looking at it like this, this verse has multiple meanings. Gotta love Stupendium for that shit xD They're brilliant that way. No matter how many times I watch and analyse their songs myself, how many people I see reacting and dissecting them, new meanings can always be found. I wonder if that's by design, or just a brilliant byproduct of their work. Or maybe we're often overanalysing stuff, like in literature classes in school.
"Teacher: Blue curtains symbolise author's deep sadness and depression after loss of their loved one. They express nihilism and futility of the relationship, as it will inevitably come to an end.
Author: No, those are just blue curtains..."
There is a story, confirmed one, in my country. One of our authors, one of the best ones according to all the literature experts, whose books and other writings are among mandatory materials to cover in literature classes, anonymously approached exams at the end of the high school, and, as part of those exams, she had to analyse a fragment of her own story. She got like 60 or 70% points that one could get from that task xD
I guess everyone sees and understands things in their own way, sometimes widely differently tenth author themselves did.
Sorry, gone on a bit of a tangent and analysis trip there myself :'D

The great and all powerful Mcguffin of this game is the Ink Machine, which, through black magic and human sacrifice, was used to bring the animations to life. More specifically, it superimposed the world of Bendy the Ink Demon onto reality.
For reasons I can't remember, Alice the Angel, another character, is disfigured. She has also come to believe that through ritually sacrificing Boris, the Goofy look-a-like you see at the beginning, she can cure her disfigurement. You spend most of the game trying to save him.
Most of the mook type enemies you see in the game are demons of some kind, or styled after demons. But Alice is an Angel, and arguably the bigger enemy here, hence "If you thought the demons were your problem right now, well The Angel is on the stage so pipe down."
