The Master System was my first console. I actually inherited it from my brother who received it as a Xmas present in 1987. He is quite a bit older than I am and I guess he was becoming more interested in girls and partying because he only had the games that were bundled with the console - Outrun, Afterburner and Hang-on. I added some classics to the collection including Golden Axe, Shinobi, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and Sonic. I had played video games before but this system was the one which hooked me in. I'm from the UK but we were living in Paris at the time and what seems amazing when I look back now was that in France, Master System games were everywhere. I don't even recall seeing a NES until I played it at my friend's house! The Master System was very popular and well supported in Europe well into the 90s. Great collection - thanks for sharing.
Awesome that you have the entire US Sega Master System collection! I have very fond memories of the SMS. I originally got the Sega Scope 3D set for my 12th birthday back in 1988, and have been a fan ever since. I was one of the only Sega kids in school whereas all my friends played the NES. Some of my favorite games include Golvellius, Rocky, Ghostbusters, Out Run, and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. I ended up finding Phantasy Star and Y's at Goodwill for an incredible price, but have yet to really play much of them. I've heard great things about both of those games, so I definitely plan on getting around to playing them at some point.
loved that i had this as my own first game console growing up loved games like double dragon, all the alex kidd games, choplifter, kings quest , kungfu kid ,lord of the sword, kensiden ,rastan, glovieliuos , ghostbusters, rocky, walter payton football ,prowrestling, any time i go into a mom and pop game shop i see what master system games they have first i have 56 total would love to have a whole US collection one day
Thanks John this is what I've been waiting for. The sega master system is my favourite console of all. It while technically my second console but the one that got me into gaming where the 2600 I would play once in a while the sms I would play everyday.
Ive never fully got into the master system games much. but im glad i can use this as kind of a crutch to dive into experience with it. much appreciated, John. Thank you.
Nice! That might be my Wonderboy III and Phantasy Star if you got them from my brother. Those games are awesome! I bought the Power Base converter because I had a friend who had 40 Sega Master System games. I also would by Sega Master system games at that Toy Store at the Anderson Outlet mall. I don't remember how much they were selling for but I remember they were dirt cheap. Man, your videos are bringing back lots of memories!
I love the master system and collecting for it. But it's hard to find boxes in good shapes nowadays. The white paper is easily torn, sunfaded or yellow love the vid
you are so right about the library, the U.S. has some excellent games, but is limited in games available. I've been collecting pal games lately and games like special criminal investigation, robocop versus the terminator, Asterix are fun! Even games from Brazil like MK3, just show off the power of the Sega Master.
I still have my copy of Psycho Fox, was the first game I ever owned and is still one of my fave of all time (tho I might be a little biast). I later picked up Decap Attack on Mega Drive, which is a sorta spiritual sequal, but it's just missing some of the magic that Psycho Fox had IMO :) Great video, thanks! subscribed ;)
Great job again John. I have 40 left to collect but I already have majority of the big ones CIB. Finding Dick Tracy, Ghouls n Ghost NTSC and CIB...good luck. Took me forever. What's your thoughts on King's Quest?
I love the Master System, it was my first system. I have about 60 games. My favorite game is actually the original Wonder Boy. I just got an Everdrive cart with about 700 MS games. I have been discovering some real gems
I can't wait to start moving in to new my house so i can start buying master system games. Running out of room but i pick some up if i see them in the wild.
it was actually a heavily modified Fist of the North Star (Hokuto No Ken) game, which explains why enemies exploded in the game, and the character on the title screen looks like Kenshiro from the first season of the anime but oddly in a Karate gi instead of his blue biker suit.
Great video as always! Can i get some advice, i have a sms II and wondering if an RF modulator would work? (RF Modulator AV-RF AV-TV Converter RCA Ant Input To F Type Coax Output DVD M99) would the converter work and then i can get an AV to HDMI cable? would that work? im really stuck as i dont have a tv that can find an analogue channel. Thanks
Thanks for the video, John. I have a question about Golden Axe Warrior: I've heard from a number of sources that it was an import with a U.S. UPC sticker. Usually with imports I expect to see a landscape-oriented manual, but the copy of Golden Axe Warrior I have (acquired from eBay in January 2007) has the traditional U.S. vertical orientation for the manual. (Case doesn't have UPC sticker, but it's possible I swapped out the case before I knew what I was doing: going to go back and check my spare cases...) What are your thoughts on this? Is it possible there was a printing of U.S.-style manuals for this game? (Can't imagine I have a fake: that would be a weird thing to bother faking in 2007...). I'm going to tweet you a picture too.
@@MightyQDawg There is no European Manual, the only thing that makes GAW US is the barcode sticker. For whatever reason the European RPG releases all had a Portrait Mode manual opposed to the Landscape manuals in multiple languages. If you google GAW, PS, Miracle Warriors for their European releases they all have Portrait Mode manuals
@@VinylGoo666 I didn't know that about European RPG manuals. Thanks for the info! I'll have to keep that in mind as I start to collect more PAL region games.
@@MightyQDawg Sorry for the necro bump but for whatever reason Sega was quirky with releasing RPGs specifically with Portrait manuals in Europe, Sega Retro's database is a great resource and has the scans for the Eurpoean RPGs I mentioned in the earlier post. Good luck :)
Thanks for the video. i just traded a n64 with two games for some master system games....but i still dont have a master system to play them on....i will find one this year....the hunt is on!
Great unit the sega ,I had a heap of fun with it. Wonder boy 3 prob best, golden axe warrior, miracle warriors I finished completely. I want the model 1 but hard to find and expensive . Nice collection very jealous of you.
Hey John, I'm making my way through all of your videos at the moment and was curious about these videos recording years ago. What were they recorded for? You definitely present them as if you are trying to help budding retro game collectors like myself so I was just curious what their original purpose was? Thanks.
Because of your video i decoded to buy a master system. I got system CIB, 3d glasses, and 5 common sports games for $100. Did i do pretty good or did i get ripped off.
hey john i love the fact that the u.s. sms can play pal and if i'm not mistaken japanese sms games i don't mean the mark 3 but the actual japanese sms. too bad sega didn't include the fm sound chip in the u.s. sms 1 or 2 but luckily it's a easy self install
One of my favourite games at the time was g-loc kind of like an after burner type game shooting down planes and fighting huge big boss planes at the end of levels really fun game i don't know if you got that over in America i still play it now here in england. Also I don't care what anyone says sonic was better on master system than mega drive/genesis
Great video but I would say you're missing one game in this list and it's a strange one nobody ever looks at...Teddy Boy on the Sega My Card. It was such a cheap throwaway game and it's just do damn good.
No love for Ys (book 1) Ancient Vanished Omens, or SpellCaster (excellent game that was a hybrid of point-in-click adventure with great action-rpg side-scrolling action based areas)?, and Double Dragon, and I thought Hang On, After Burner, and Shinobi were pretty awesome games too on the Master System.
Awesome colection. I was hoping you would be able to help me, im looking for a game i had with my master system many years ago and its a car chasing shoot em up game. Basically your a cop chasing cars. Keeping up with them shooting them up then busting them. The last level is a helicopter ur chasing. I cant remember for the life of me the name of the game. I hope thats a good enough description of it. If you have any ideas could you please inbox me. Thanks
Wonderboy 3 is much better as dragons curse for the turbo grafix, but probably because I had dragons curse as a kid. wish I still had it, didn't know it would be expensive in the future when I was young
+John Hancock my new RUclips man lately for my retro gamers go-to. trust & believe I struggle funding people with the same passion I have for the SMS here in the states Boston to be specific. Great video great channel great job at what you do!! Thank you

great point for an outstanding game!!
+John Hancock Hancock for the save! lol sorry didn't see your response
Was Double Dragon a send away game? I remember getting my though the mail in 1989.@@johnhancockretro
I grew up with this console 😊. Sega was more popular over here in New Zealand, than Nintendo. Awesome video!
Nice! You have the misspelled label version of Psycho Fox.
Great collection brother

Did they ever fix the typo on the Psycho Fox cart?
Ripplin *My copy is good*
Black belt is my favorite. Soundtrack and great boss fights. It's a game people ignored because of the box art.

I still have the carts of from when I was a kid 🙂
Sonic, Dragons Trap, E-Swat, just to name a few.
I was a Sega kid in the 90s before PS came out.
John revisit this! We need gameplay video!
I have Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego. I thought it was the only educational game on the Master System.
One of my favourite games at the time was g-loc kind of like an after burner type game shooting down planes and fighting huge big boss planes at the end of levels really fun game i don't know if you got that over in America i still play it now here in england. John, did you ever notice your psycho fox label is misspelled? Wonder if they all were.

I have been looking for this console everywhere and it is impossible to find. I do not know what to do anymore.
Great video but I would say you're missing one game in this list and it's a strange one nobody ever looks at...Teddy Boy on the Sega My Card. It was such a cheap throwaway game and it's just do damn good.
I've always thought it funny that they made a game called Montezuma's Revenge...if you know what I mean. ;)
I have strider, golden axe warrior and spiderman with the barcode stickers
Dat Gamer Dad doe so

Hey you didn't introduce the video with "John Hancock here"
Video done years ago
+John Hancock my new RUclips man lately for my retro gamers go-to. trust & believe I struggle funding people with the same passion I have for the SMS here in the states Boston to be specific. Great video great channel great job at what you do!! Thank you
I only have around 30 sms games
+RetroR0bbie your ahead of me, I only have 10 so far
I don't see why a little sticker should matter. It is literally the same exact packaging otherwise.
Samuel Layton *The bar code gives the US price tag or you get the Europe tag that does not compute here dude*
Did you get around to getting the Master System Roller Ball?
