"Once nirvana became popular it was almost embarrassing if you could play well" that's the truest statement ever- guitar needed the 90's to remind us never to abuse such a beautiful instrument.
That's the wrong take. There was plenty of 1990's guitar slingers out there. The genre that took the hit was the poseur LA hair metal scene Stevens was associated with, which suddenly looked stupid overnight when Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit.
YOU ARE ACTING LIKE THE BANDS HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT, ITS A BUNCH OF RICH OLD GUYS THAT DECIDE WHAT PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD LIKE, THEY WERE FINISHED PUSHING (HAIR METAL) AS YOU CALL IT AND DECIDED TO BRAIN WASH YOU WITH LAME ASS GRUNGE A WATERED DOWN HEAP OF SHIT STYLE OF MUSIC AND LIKE THE REST OF THE SHEOPLE YOU SEEMED TO FOLLOW, WHO IS THE REAL POSER? AT LEAST THE METAL BANDS OF THE 80'S COULD ACTUALLY PLAY THERE INSTRUMENTS AND PUT ON AMAZING LIVE SHOWS, GRUNGE WAS GARBAGE THATS WHY IT DIDN'T EVEN LAST 10 YEARS.
Sounds jealous like a lot of others from the pre-grunge era because the honest, punk quality of the music that came out of Seattle basically put the people with big hair wearing girls clothing out of a job and shifted the spotlight away from them almost overnight. Cobain showed us that the guitar was simply a tool to craft a song with and not something you try out-do other guitarists with by making it some ridiculous geometric shape with every color on the rainbow on it. He used mustang's and jaguar's that looked like he bought them in a pawn shop and played music on them that changed a generation. I'm sure it's the cool thing to do to bad mouth the greatest songwriter of our generation but hey, that's why we have places like RUclips. Let me know where I can hear your demo so I can compare your skills to that of Cobain and Cornell and Cantrell and the rest.
Like many have said Steve probably didnt get all the credit he deserves.....his taste is excellent......his choice of notes are a special mix for sure.....such a nice guy too!!!
Appreciate his outlook on the guitar. Every day, Every Morning it’s there for me. This hunk of wood has got me through this walk of life through hell and has never disappointed me. The feeling of I’m gonna escape this place for awhile, but I’ll be back. Got me through the worst of this living hell, buried 2 brothers, my only sister and now both my parents. I need to escape sometimes and get things strait, it’s this hunk of wood and steel that allows me to endure this place.
STEVE STEVENS IS AN AMAZING GUITARIST, VERY UNDERRATED I HATE SAYING THAT PEOPLE TOSS IT AROUND TO MUCH BUT THINK ABOUT WHAT HE ACCOMPLISHED WITH IDOL. HE MANAGED TO PLAY BLAZING SOLOS AND ROCK RIFFS INCORPORATED WITH EXTREMELY CATCHY POP/PUNK/ROCK/NEW WAVE, NOT EASY TO DO HE WAS SUBTLE WHEN NEEDED AND COULD BLAST YOU IN THE FACE WITH A MEMORABLE SOLO OR MONSTER RIFF WHEN THE SONGS OPENED UP. IF YOU HAVEN'T LISTENED TO 80'S IDOL I ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO REALLY LISTEN TO THE SONG STRUCTURES AND STEVE'S PLAYING ITS AMAZING.
Likely my overall favourite guitarist of all time. So versatile, humble, and criminally underrated. I say this because as someone who's been playing guitar for over 30 years, I've never heard anyone mention his name. People always talk about Randy Rhoads, Kirk Hammett, Slash, etc. These are incredible guitarists, don't get me wrong, but why the FACK does no one ever mention Steve Stevens? When I mention his name, people usually say "who?" And I'm like FFS...
his solo albums are great but it's with Bozzio and Levin with their double album Black Light Syndrome and Situation Dangerous it's ( for me ) where Steve truly shined
Cool story Steve, a real genuine player... but that Armada axe is so top shelf, through body neck and stainless steel frets, the inlays, etc etc...the whole deal looks totally ace!!
That's one wicked ax, never been a fan of the EB axes, there looks that is, but i love what Steve's playing. Of course I've always used there strings, used to be Super Slinkys now the Hybrid Slinkys!🎸😎🎸
He is definitely a great player, under-rated for sure I think. He did an awesome job on Vince Neil's first solo album. I have his signature "Bare Knuckle" pickups in my Ibanez RG....they sound great.
was never into billy in the 80s as a musician i knew who steve was but i've watched a ton of these vids with him and he's about the coolest guy out there along with paul gilbert.
Wow -- when he cited Howe, Fripp, Hackett -- those were my guys exactly the same way, for the same reasons he said (encompassing all kinds of musical styles, etc). I'm about the same age as Steve -- funny how we were digging the same things at the same time... Steve is an amazing musician.
Good luck with that. It's called a Music Man Armada, and they stopped manufacturing it some time ago. Sad shame, really, because it's such a beautiful instrument.
The normal Slinky set is 10-46. I wonder if the 48's are too heavy on the low end? I use 9's on my normal tuned Les Paul and 10's on my tuned down Les Paul
This man is a master of his craft. Absolutely wonderful player. However, I believe I have uncovered Nuno and Steve's secret...it is the black nail polish.
The Head Shops! First place i went to, buying strings for myself. I remember being short on cash many times and the old stoner guys cutting me a break. Those were good times, and good people. This Steve Stevens cat....great, GREAT player.
Agreed very talented, great guitar player he played with Terry Bozzio and Tony Levin! and he's ignored like many other great musicians by ignorant pricks ...
Well, even in '90 or '91, when Grunge really blew up, I was still in awe of people playing well, especially someone by the likes of Steve Vai or Vito Bratta.
I knew of him before he had the problem with the hair. Underneath all that shit is a guitar player. Iron American Dream on RUclips. Share it. Take a ride across the promised land. Ride a Harley.
Personally I have been playing for 21 years and I have two thing to say...first was I the only one that watched this dudes last rift and thought...kinda weak...then by the 4th time gained respect. 2nd...I don't care who you are if you can't appreciate the brillance of Nirvana's simplicity and depth than you have no business playing guitar or singing...wich Kurt did both and I doubt this cat did. If you don't dig the Grunge Graats like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Pealr Jam and The Smashing Pumpkins then you are either death( no disrespect what so ever), dumb or don't play guitar and sing
One if the most ignored and underrated players in the past 40 years. A man of many talents.... Much respect :-)
Yes, I love Billy Idols music. Steve's style really makes it memorable.
I agree, he's always been one of my favorites.
I love Steve’s playing. His style is so tasteful and thoughtful.

Kurt always looked stupid with his guitar, a clown that killed himself

Exactly nirvana was fucking garbage
TOTAL BEAST. Steve Stevens is A COMPLETE BEAST.
Criminally underrated guitarist. Seriously!!
No he is not
Like many have said Steve probably didnt get all the credit he deserves.....his taste is excellent......his choice of notes are a special mix for sure.....such a nice guy too!!!
as long as the check cashed he's ok with it
I admire his attack so so much. So much tone from his pick attack.
Appreciate his outlook on the guitar. Every day, Every Morning it’s there for me. This hunk of wood has got me through this walk of life through hell and has never disappointed me. I could listen to this man play 24 hours a day. His note selection is always spot on for my ears.
I love Steve Stevens' playing, great musician.
I didn't really start to get into his playing until I heard Vince Neil's
first solo album. He does a great solo on the Set Me Free cover.

Top Gun's anthem theme song is his masterpiece and true legend.. respect 🙏
This man KNOWS!!!
stlll one of my fave guitarists of all time - the man can PLAY !
I spy, with my little eye, a Kemper Profiler! Sounding great.
Extra ordinary masterful player. The guitar is so beatiful.
Likely my overall favourite guitarist of all time. So versatile, humble, and criminally underrated. Totally agree!

his solo albums are great but it's with Bozzio and Levin with their double album Black Light Syndrome and Situation Dangerous it's ( for me ) where Steve truly shined
Nice playin Steve. EBMM guitars always sound so nice.

Cool story Steve, a real genuine player... but that Armada axe is so top shelf, through body neck and stainless steel frets, the inlays, etc etc...the whole deal looks totally ace!!
Wow! The legend of Steve Stevens. Very talented and musical
e per me uno dei migliori chitarristi in circolazione !
That's one wicked ax, never been a fan of the EB axes, there looks that is, but i love what Steve's playing. Of course I've always used there strings, used to be Super Slinkys now the Hybrid Slinkys!🎸😎🎸
This guy can play anything on the guitar, wow
And the thing about him is that he makes it look so freaking easy wow very underrated to,
That guitar is spectacular!
out of all these String Theory vids his playing is the most tasteful and musical, Stevens is a legend
What I wouldn't give to sit with this guy, talk, and watch him play.

Awesome musician. I love his playing.
The tone master

Good day, bad day, good song, bad song, he will always be the one constant!
Just saw Steve with Kings of Chaos...freaking awesome !
Can somebody please get Steve to do a video talking about how he wrote the Top Gun anthem? Please?
He is definitely a great player, under-rated for sure I think. He did an awesome job on Vince Neil's first solo album. I have his signature "Bare Knuckle" pickups in my Ibanez RG....they sound great.
PLEASE RELEASE THE SNL PERFORMANCE OF BILLY IDOL FROM JAN 1984. ONE OF THE TOP 5 TV PERFORMANCES EVER!!!

Such a rockstar \m/,
Would LOVE to know the model Music Man guitar he's playing. GORGEOUS, gotta get me one asap!!! :O
Good luck with that. It's called a Music Man Armada, and they stopped manufacturing it some time ago. Sad shame, really, because it's such a beautiful instrument.
You can still find the Armada on the used market, keep checking Reverb or eBay, just plan on spending $2,500-3,000 US, killer guitars!
So freaking underrated
Steve Stevens Looks like Gargamel from the Smurfs.
Then Gargamel is my new idol, too:-)
Ernie Ball armada. Cold.
This man has one of the purist tones in rock n roll!
Steve Stevens can play all kinds of music
The normal Slinky set is 10-46. I wonder if the 48's are too heavy on the low end? I use 9's on my normal tuned Les Paul and 10's on my tuned down Les Paul
Respect!

What's the name of the music man ? i can't find it anywhere
His own Cool Tone....
John 5, Guthrie Govan and Steve Stevens are the most versatile guitarists in the history of rock music. Очен Хорошо Музикант!
00:31 how was your trip to dover, steve? :-P
He plays Ernie's strings, but haven't seen an EB Musicman in his tour case.
He paid an EVH music man at times during the Vince Neil tour with VH in 93
Agreed very talented, great guitar player he played with Terry Bozzio and Tony Levin! and he's ignored like many other great musicians by ignorant pricks ...
Playing Together ...RighT NOW...°)!

" it was almost embarrassing if you could play well " LOL.....
Well, even in '90 or '91, when Grunge really blew up, I was still in awe of people playing well, especially someone by the likes of Steve Vai or Vito Bratta.
Subtitles in spanish 👐
I didn't even think about you bro and this I regret you know billy was so over the top. But later I realize you were half the tune.
Money money live is genius
After you defect Steve vai... you have to face Steve Stevens. (It’s a meme format don’t think I’m saying Steve Stevens is better than Steve vai)
what guitar is that??
music man armada
paid no attention to this guy in the 80s. big mistake. very very cool guy and great player
I knew of him before he had the problem with the hair. Underneath all that shit is a guitar player.
Iron American Dream on RUclips. Share it. Take a ride across the promised land. Ride a Harley.
Sucks Music Man no longer makes the Armada.
Dude looks like nikki sixx on the thumbnail
Personally I have been playing for 21 years and I have two thing to say...first was I the only one that watched this dudes last rift and thought...kinda weak...then by the 4th time gained respect. 2nd...I don't care who you are if you can't appreciate the brillance of Nirvana's simplicity and depth than you have no business playing guitar or singing...wich Kurt did both and I doubt this cat did. Steve Stevens is god.!!!!
What in the hell is going on with that hair?
Why does this man look like a soccer mom?
Nirvana ruined a lot of the music scene back then.
