    How to on freeing a clogged drain using a plunger and snake with discussion on the use of a liquid drain opener. #plumbing #handyman #savemoney
    Transcript provided for the hearing impaired:
    Today on Repairs101 I've got a sink that won't drain and if you're watching I imagine you've got one, too. I'll take you through your options and show what you can do. I allow the washer to vent into the sink which allows for a build-up of what is just "dryer-lint" that never made it to the dryer. First line of defense is a plunger. Get a good seal. The plunger is the first line of defense because it's the most "eco-friendly" choice: use hydraulic pressure to drive through the blockage. Second time trying this and it's not working move to something stronger. This is my snake, inexpensive manual snake that you'll find at any good hardware store. Reason I'm wearing gloves to keep me from coming into contact with the horrible places this little fellow has been. I'm going to unwind and drop it. It's nothing but a spring that's been unwound a bit. It's going to be clear in a few hours. Clear enough that I don't have to bucket it all outside. I'm just going to wait. That's often the best thing you can do with home plumbing. If you can, apply the 24 hour rule which is come back 24 hours later: often organic matter will break down in water in that period of time and clear itself. This isn't going to but it will seep. I've got a Rubbermaid storage bin lid and I'm going to use that to catch the water. Often you undo these by hand. You don't even need a wrench. A lot of options to open that elbow joint. These Channellocks might be overkill. An ordinary pair that you find in anybody's kitchen drawer is all you need. Pipe wrench but they are cumbersome and might damage plastic pipes. There is a new style of pipe wrench. That would be very effective but kind of expensive. I recommend you go with the medium sized Channellocks. If all you've got is a chain wrench or locking chain wrench this will do the job but you're going to have to be careful, as with pipe wrench -- you're dealing with plastics and they don't take a lot. The manufacturer was kind enough to let us know what it is. "Slip and Lock Nut Wrench" I've had a lot of use for this in boat building. I use it on plastic "through-hull" fittings. It's a wide jawed adjustable wrench. Very light duty tool. Nice and light you're not as likely to slip and damage a new boat when you're putting in thru-hulls. I'm wearing my respirator with the organic cartridges. Although this isn't a toilet outlet it is connected to all the other toilet outlets in the neighbourhood and the smell coming out of it is ferocious. You're going to want to ventilate the room well and wear a respirator. To my surprise the elbow is clear. The problem is downstream. Before you do anything else you need to shove a rag to plug that hole because the sewage gas is coming up because there's no water trap to stop it. You've got to get something in there fast. I've got my mask on, I've got my gloves on. First thing is back off that nut. I'm going in with the snake. I'm going to use the crank. It's very crude but it works: it allows you to spin. tighten that thumbscrew and the S-turn in the metal allows you to crank then you back it off and feed some more in. It's going a lot further. That is the end. All in but this one foot you see in my hand. I'm going to put my catch-basin here again and slowly pull it out and clean it off. I've got my mask on, my gloves on. I've got a couple of wet rags and my plastic bag ready to receive the snake. Pulling this thing out and feeding it into the bag, cleaning it. This black organic matter, that's what I'm going to avoid coming in contact with and try and catch it all with the rag. Seeing some schmere inside the plastic bag I'm glad I'm using a plastic bag clearly the rag isn't getting it all. I'll put it with the rag and everything in the bag, get this plug back in and get organized to put that water trap back in. You want a nice seat on this seal. Then let this thing pull it down into it. Hopefully that's going to hold. Hand tight is generally tight enough and hand tight on top. This is the critical area here that's going to leak if we have a leak. I'll leave my catch-basin and get some at it's running properly but I do know that the trap is full of water the smell can't come from the sewer I can take this dam thing off. I'm going to pour Drano down there. That's last line of defence. You might try a product like Drano Max Gel. I've had a lot of success with this in other areas of the house. It's a great product I just wanted to suggest that when you're trying to decide whether or not to use a product like that: consider the fact that the water you're pouring it into is indirectly the same water you're drinking. Sounds like it's going to require more plunging.

    Before unscrewing pipes, I would try a garden hose shoved in the drain with a rag around it the opening to seal it. I've used that a lot to clear drains of lint and hair. I rigged up a short piece of hose with a valve to attach to the main hose, so I can turn on the water outside and then start the flow at the sink when ready. Also, you can buy a lint filter that looks like a white plastic ribbed cone that sits in the drain hole. It catches all the lint and is easily cleaned with a few swipes of the finger. Its tall enough so that if it gets clogged, water will still drain at the top. This works better than little filter screens that go on the end of the discharge pipe.

    Would it have been easier to have disconnected the mechanical splice there just before the main line and snake it from that point...The way you have shown you have to deal with the 90 degree turn where you inserted your snake and run the risk of damaging the seat faces on the trap...Just an after thought....

    Okay. I just got all 50ft (well maybe 45ft) in the pipe. I'll edit this post if and when I can get that cable back out.
    [EDIT] It came out fine and the clog is gone. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do it. I first tried a 25ft drum auger. It either could not reach the clog or just pushed further down. The 50ft took care of it.

    For small drains you can suck a clog back up a drain with a wet vac. This works wall on a lot of drains, make sure you cover any overflow vents to assure full vacuum. Hair clogs can be pulled back up a drain with a hooked peace of wire. On larger drain pipes a garden hose set on high spray can be inserted into and down a clean out access or roof vent. This will wash out a clog. If a rag is used to close off the entrance around the hose the pipe will pressurize pushing a clog out. Care must be taken not to over flow a toilet or flour drain using this trick.

    The tote lid makes a nice cshallow catch basin as is using a trash bag especially if you are snaking a drain in a finished kitchen or bathroom as that organic sludge is a greasy nasty stuff to try to clean up. I highly recommend using a heavier 50 gallon drum liner as it is thicker material and has a larger capacity than a typical kitchen trash bag and they can be very handy to have on hand.

    hey I need some advice from a fellow Canadian please. So a month Ago I Accidentally flushed a rag down my Toilet. luckily the toilet still flushes fine. My Issue and worry however is that when I do Laundry the Toilet and bathtub make noise and pressure bubbles up them. I have read that The main Waste line is probably partially clogged or maybe the rag is stuck in the toilet Trap vent Area. Should I try and use a long Auger Snake down the Toilet/Waste line to clear the blockage?? I'm scared of doing damage or it getting stuck. BtW my Lines are PvC. thankyou.

    I'm having major problems with my washer. After having the plumber come by with his snake and costing $600 dollars a few times, it's still not draining. I brought the drain snake, and it'll clog up again in a week. Any suggestions?

    • @repairs101
      @repairs101  7 лет назад +1

      Try a (temporary) strainer to determine if the clogging is from the wash water itself (lots of mud and or lint?) or is in the sewer? Your high priced plumber should have run a camera snake the 1st or 2nd time to see what and where the problem is - could be the sewers, not your home. Any neighbours have the same problem? Cities and old development sewers are prone to "Fatbergs" .

    Sodium hypoclorite is not bad for the environment. It just gets extremely diluted and most of it is broken down by buffers in the sewers. Tap water is full of chlorine and fluoride anyway.

    How do you get around an elbow?

    • @caddymech
      @caddymech 10 лет назад

      watch it from 5:30 to about 7:00...the way you get around the elbow is to twist the cable so the end of the cable can turn the corner...you twist the cable using the little pipe with a wing screw on it that is slid up over the cable...you tighten down the wing screw and twist the pipe while pushing more cable into the drain. then when you feel it turn the corner...you stop twisting, lossen the wing screw and slide more cable through the little handle pipe.

    Wow, what do you do for a living? Was all that worth spending a couple of hundred bucks to have it professionally cleaned and guaranteed?

    Well im checking out how to use a drain auger for a tub drain..

      Soap and hair are the most common issues in the tub.
      If the tub drains slowly wait for it to empty then pour a kettle of boiling water in the drain.
      Often it will soften up the soap enough to free the clog. Good luck!
