Liz Dawn & Bill Tarmey - absolutely made for one another. Thanks for so many wonderful memories, and such beautiful genuine people. Love you both - rest in peace xxx
Just came across this and was about to watch it but, got 5 minutes in have instead decided to save it to "watch later" and am going to watch it around Christmas time. It just feels like a festive show. Love shows like this around Christmas. Nostalgic. Am looking forward to it.
Never seen this, what a treat - LOVE Liz dawn! I met her and Jack, Bill Tarmy, back in the early 90s when they were promoting Morecambe as a holiday resort. What a pair of charmers they were, lovely people and just wonderful as Vera and Jack for all those years on the Street. Liz and Bill brought so many smiles in their lives - it's not a bad legacy is it? Thanks for sharing this, great fun! X
This was recorded in 1996 and released straight to video on November 11th of that year, to catch the Christmas market. The house party did not coincide with Liz Dawn's actual 57th birthday, which fell on 8th November - just 3 days before the video's release!
I've met Liz Dawn in real, nice lady. She visited our centre when I was studying catering on the YTS (Remember that??) I still have a picture of me serving her.
She was a lovely, warm and genuine lady wasn't she - like Vera, but without the hard edge. God bless her, she had a very successful life, both personally and professionally. What a wonderful house she owned!
I like to imagine that when it cut to a pre-taped segment, that Liz’s husband (the real one) wheeled in one of those small black Sony TVs they used to have back in the day and beckoned everyone to gather round!
@@scottyunitedboy2925 Thank you! Been racking my brain to remember where I'd seen her before - Liz should have been given a little scripted intro so people knew who she was. This is very amateurish - it's obvious it's a straight-to-video show, and was not made for broadcast.
I think this was made as a "straight to video" piece. Never aware it was on tv but I remember the piles of vhs copies of it in Woolworths. Obviously staged and scripted but a window back into ITV entertainment in the 1980's.
Yes it was made for the Christmas 1996 video market - the VHS was released on November 11th 1996, which was 3 days after Liz Dawn's 57th birthday on 8th November. So we can safely say it wasn't her birthday or even close to it when they recorded this! I suspect it was an early experimental project for the new independent TV production company 'Talent TV' set up by former LWT Head of Entertainment John Kaye Cooper.
This was a 'straight to video' job. Can't remember if it was 80s or 90s but I remember piles of vhs copies in Woolworths reduced to 99p. This has got to be one of the worst things ever.
For only £12.99, you could, according to Polygram Video publicity material, watch exclusive fifty minutes 'packed with 'wisecracking routines, sketches and songs' from a party of the dregs of the D-List celebrities gathered to listen to Liz Dawn 'singing'.
It's very obvious it was made for video and not for actual broadcast on a terrestrial TV channel. Very amateurish in places, and poorly scripted. Best part was Bill Tarmey towards the end though again, he wasn't given any good lines. Why does he tell Liz "I did get you a pressie" then her birthday cake is wheeled on? A cake is not a pressie - it's a cake!
My dad got a promotional copy of this back in the day via Granada and fuck me, this is almost certainly the worst programme and concept I've ever seen. God knows who thought this was a good idea. No wonder it barely sold any copies and was reduced to 99p weeks later. Woeful concept, Liz Dawn pretending to be Vera Duckworth, embarrassingly awful scripted gags, terrible routines Ad infinitum and only marginally more funny than anal cancer. I don't even know how a fan of Liz Dawn could enjoy this.
say what you really think alex mate please dont hold back hahahahaha! really funny to read your post you seem a right miserable old bastards just like me mate hahaha i am sure you and i would be great friends in life haha all the best pal thanks for the laugh regards jase xx
@@Jimbo8012 is that right? Oh I thought he was the real husband. Well I'd refuse to be on it too if I'm honest. Im a massive lily savage / Paul o grady fan too and to see him on the video smiling and going along with it was proper cringe as fuck, I mean Paul and lily were huge back then and he didn't need to do shite like this the mind boggles mate it really does. @@jasonbarron3047 That IS Liz Dawn's real husband Don Ibbetson - do a Google Image search! That's why he can't bloody act! I agree it's a baffling show and has 'straight to video' written all over it - it simply isn't of broadcast quality. It was an experimental project by the director John Kaye Cooper, former Head of Entertainment at London Weekend Television, who in January 1996 set up his own independent TV production company 'Talent TV'. This was one of its first productions. If Kaye-Cooper hoped ITV would pick this up, he was utterly deluded - it's a dog's dinner. It's obvious a group of TV execs sat round a table in early 1996, and ticked boxes. They had Liz Dawn booked, and her magnificent home to film in. Then they just needed a couple of researchers to go through Liz' little black book with her to set up a celebrity guest list - and work out who would do a turn for cash, which turned out to be Paul O' Grady, Les Dennis, Bill Tarmey, Fred Feast and a few others, and that's the one hour show sorted. It's surprisingly poorly scripted & produced - they should have hired a better gag writer than Laurie Rowley. Needless to say he and Producer Jeff Thacker are old LWT buddies of John Kaye Cooper. ITV, like the BBC, was (and still is) an old boys club. Interesting it featured so few Corrie stars - Granada TV always kept a tight rein on their cast and controlled what TV appearances they were allowed to do. The Corrie 'brand' must be protected at all costs! If this show had a prestigious Saturday night TV slot, you can be sure Liz' living room would have been packed to the rafters with her Street co-stars. But as popular as she was with her colleagues (and as much as those actors loved a free piss up), they wouldn't have been permitted to turn out in force for a home video like this benefiting no one but its star! Lovely as Liz is, the producers were expecting a lot asking her to host it. She's not a stand up comic, and not much of a singer - she could never have been the subject of 'An Audience With'! In the absence of a strong star, the show shamelessly pimps the Coronation Street connection and Liz pretty much plays Vera Duckworth throughout! It's based on a very feeble premise, a popular soap actress' birthday - and not even a big birthday with a zero on the end, as Liz turned 57 that year! The VHS video was released for sale on 11th November 1996 - just 3 days after Liz Dawn's birthday, so clearly it was recorded long before the big day. If Liz had retired from Coronation Street that year, this special would at least have had a credible focus to hang it on. But she remained in Coronation Street for another 12 years after this, retiring due to emphysema in 2008.
@@beansonghost719 Yes those comments got it wrong thinking an actor played Liz' husband - as I posted earlier, that is Don Ibbetson, her real husband. But their comments about how poor the show was are spot on!

Sorry to hear you had such a terrible Christmas. Still, at least Covid19 came along and took your mind off of it.
Oh how I would love to be there with this utterly wonderful legend. Naturally funny and full of love and soul.
just stumbled on this ...WOW .... great singing voice

Lot of brookside cast in this

What the hell was footballer Lee Sharpe doing there? 😂
He was leaving United and needed the cash
What does she say about the mouse? I couldn't quite catch it but seems funny lol
whos the person liz is talking to at 27:59?
that’s Eithne Brown, she had been Chrissie Rogers in Brookside a few years before
