I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 weeks ago. I am 29 years old. I was hospitalized in the ICU for 12 days with Diabetic Ketoacidosis and acute kidney injury. I couldn't walk or keep any food down. I was even vomiting up water. My glucose levels were in the 500, with a A1C of 14. Two weeks later, my glucose is 75 - 100 and feeling great now. I just avoid most carbs, but thank you making content like this.

Yeah, same here, type 1 diabetes sucks and it is NOT fun to wear a glucose monitor and test your blood sugar constantly just to stay alive. I find this video insulting, the dude CLEARLY knows nothing about diabetes, especially type 1. It isn't just the carbs in foods, but mainly the glycemic index and load which he never mentions, so why is he doing a video on diabetes????? I mean wearing a glucose monitor for a MONTH does NOT make him some sort of expert. Plus it isn't just food that makes your blood sugar spike, diabetics that wear a monitor find that out REALLY quickly. You can literally eat nothing and watch it spike really high. What he should have titled this video, is what foods helped his blood sugar not spike as someone that has a healthy metabolic function.

I am 71 and was diagnosed with diabetes about two months ago. I ended up in the hospital with a 500+ blood sugar reading and was there for two and a half days. I'm feeling great now and am on fast acting insulin three times a day and long lasting insulin at night. My glucose readings are down pretty much in the 90s to 120 throughout the day.
I stick to pretty much the same foods and have exactly the same breakfast every day - organic steel cut oats, Organic Valley full fat cottage cheese, and either organic strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries, with brown sugar Swerve (no carb) sweetener. Mix this all up and it's a great porridge!
What's funny is that after about four hours my glucose can read one day at 98 and another day at 115 or 120 - and that's with the same berries! I read up and was told at the hospital that many things besides food effect glucose readings, and I've found that out.
I go by the Zone Diet Plan which is great for diabetics and I've lost 15 pounds already and have my energy back! The only high density carbs I have are the steel cut oats - 2/3 cup and that has fiber and protein. Or a piece of Ezekiel bread. The rest of my meals are protein and low density carbs.
This usually keeps my glucose in check but I do have to make sure to follow a quite strict schedule because otherwise it will dip too low and that is not good either. I got very bad symptoms from the hypoglycemia a few times, so I am cautious about staying on schedule!
I'm learning as I go along and my husband and I took a week's vacation a while ago and that was a learning experience of traveling with diabetes!

That’s what I was going to mention… a person with Type 2 diabetes would spike much higher than Bobby AND would take hours to come back down. If someone is trying to reverse Type 2 diabetes (like my skinny husband is doing and can’t afford to lose weight) they need to avoid all processed carbs until they become insulin sensitive again. Which takes longer the longer a person has had diabetes, even years. But it’s worth it.

There may be no spike if the fast acting insulin is covering it, or a small spike if it's not covering it well - it's so non-specific, hard to accurately measure a so-called "spike". Does one have to NOT take their pre-meal insulin in order to get an accurate spike measurement???

i just stay away from carbs pretty much all day long. I don't have breakfast, I have a brunch/lunch of eggs/bacon or left over steak. Dinner is pretty much just a piece of meat (steak, chicken, pork, fish or a salmon patty). I may have a garden vegtable, I don't have salads very often as even the carbs from salad (with olive oil/vinegar dressing) spike blood sugars. I have been a type 2 for years now, was pregnant with last child and got gestational diabetes. ALways had hunger issue's as a growing child/teenager/young mother. Diabetes runs in cousins, fatness runs in all my relatives, they are as round around the middle as they are tall. Almost all of em die from some type of heart issue's. But most of them DRANK/SMOKED like barfly's. I do not, never did.
Anyways, food is a nightmare for me, and I miss chocolate ice cream runs to the dairy queen with hubby, I miss getting a cheese cake for bday dinner celebrations. I miss chips, pretzels, choc chip cookies, french fries, mashed potato's and macaroni salads. Life is a bitch.

As a chip substitute, I found a great recipe for super thin zucchini slices which get dehydrated or oven-toasted after being coated in olive oil, rolled in tomato paste powder, sprinkled with Italian seasoning, and then covered in cheese (parmesan/mozzarella). They come out tasting like a pizza chip!

It's so hard to guess what foods will do, but these are obviously rough to dose for. Sola makes keto bagels but I've never tried them with him. I'm sometimes pleasantly surprised by a food not reacting as bad as I would think, and other times I'm shocked that something low carb causes a huge spike. Meat will actually cause a spike. Weirdly, vegetarian chili does better than meat chili because the meat causes him to stay high a long time. That's why a lot of keto Type 1 ppl use Regular insulin, not fast acting. Meat causes slow rises.

I don’t think many people in the comments are understanding the main takeaway here. YES every body is unique and has different needs, diabetic or not. If as a diabetic you’re finding that carbs with high fiber content are causing major spikes then that is a dosage issue. All the diabetics saying this would be different if a diabetic tested it out - yes if you were not dosing the proper amount of insulin needed to cover the carbs the result would definitely be a spike of sorts. That is because you’re body makes little to no insulin on its own - if you’re a type 2 the only way to eliminate a need for prescribed insulin would be to cut out carbohydrates almost entirely and get on a strict exercise regimen. Bobby is showing you how to minimize spikes, given you’re taking meds as prescribed and personalized to your needs as a diabetic.

My first response to your results: you must not have insulin resistance. If you take the exact same foods and feed it to someone who has insulin resistance their glucose score(s) might be much different. As soon as you eat carbs your body sends a signal to your pancreas to release insulin to negate your carb spike.
I don't disagree that fiber helps, but a person with insulin resistance might achieve different results....
My biggest concern would be this: how much insulin does my body have to release to compensate for the carbs that I am eating? Eg., a 60 year old person might require 5 times as much insulin to achieve the same result as a 30 yr old person... is that much insulin healthy?

There is also the idea of always eating your protein item first, then fats and carbs last. Also, some research shows drinking 1T of vinegar [ACV usually mentioned] diluted in a cup of water with or without lemon or lime also affects the rate at which glucose is absorbed and/or insulin is released. I love that Bobby is doing this research and posting. Exercise [i.e. walking] immediately or soon after eating is, as he mentioned, also a way to level the spike. Would be interested in seeing more tests with and without ACV, ordered eating and how much exercise would be beneficial after eating. Now at 66 I am at half the amount of insulin and down 18 lbs also I am a quadriplegic so cant do regular excercise. Good Luck

This is good info for the effects on blood sugar of different types of carbs for people in general. However, Booby is not qualified to relate this to a diabetic and his/her diet. I do give him kudos for promoting healthy eating in general. I’ve been type 1 for 52 years and I have good control. Great time in range for blood sugars, and good average blood sugar. I go eat high glycemic foods from time to time, but plan for it accordingly.

I don't know how I feel about a super healthy person with no blood sugar problems or insulin resistance using a blood glucose monitor. On the one hand, it's for science! I appreciate Bobby using the monitor to test foods that he can then recommend for diabetics. I know that Bobby is using the monitor for research and to provide useful information for his viewers so they can improve and maintain their health. On the other hand, healthy, non-diabetic people obsessively monitoring their blood glucose levels has become the fad du jour in toxic diet culture. It's the latest tool that's being abused to support disordered eating. I know Bobby isn't doing that, but it's come to the point where seeing the monitor on a non-diabetic person's arm just makes me wince.

As an insulin dependant Type 2 Diabetic, I highly recommend no more than 20-30 carbs per/day & a KETO diet. There is No RDA for carbs. Eat 7-10 cups of vegis/day + high fat proteins. I follow Dr. Eric Berg on Y.T. for details. God bless~

The title is incredibly misleading- you are a healthy, non-diabetic man whose merely using a glucose machine to monitor spikes of glucose after meals. The sensor is financially out of reach for so many people and each person is different. This would be more credible if someone was on here who actually knew what they were talking about- like a dietician or someone who has successfully managed their diabetes for years.

I'd definitely go with a diabetic who's entirely diet-controlled over a dietician since most of them still spout the "healthy" carb-heavy approach which worsens diabetes and leads to complications and ever-increasing meds.

@@margaretmoore5917 If you have an Aldi near, I'd recommend going there and getting a sprouted bread. Bobby has videos about this. The problem with that cheap store bread is that the wheat is GMO and has been sprayed heavily with pesticides which cause inflammation (which then leads to serious health issues). The wheat has been stripped of nutrients and has preservatives and sugar and additives.
It's unfortunate that better food costs more in this country. Many things are allowed into our food that many other countries have outlawed. I myself am on disability and have a tough time affording to eat better. I just eat less now. I do use monk fruit in my tea now and try to eat organic when possible. Ok, I understand the “if you’re a diabetic”. But, seeing as 80% or more of the population has pre diabetes or diabetes and doesn’t even know it! And all you have to do is go in public and look at people and know without a doubt that the current recommendations for what’s “healthy” is NOT! Plus the fact that many people who are on the verge of a diagnosis don’t get that diagnosis for years because all a doctor does is check a fasting bg and sometimes an a1c once a year for most people. The fasting is useless because unless you’re a T1 your body still makes insulin abs with a fasting bg, in the early years (and it fires go on for years) that bg is going to look “ok”. And any a1c that is above normal non diabetic range is showing a very dangerous problem! And it doesn’t even show the whole picture! Because they could still be spiking after meals for hours but still low enough over night and in the absence of food to make their a1c look “ok” but still be encountering damage to their bodies!!! And don’t even get me started on if they lose weight it will resolve. The weight is a SYMPTOM not the direct cause!!!
