  • Our Open Days are intended to give an insight in to Maths at Oxford, whether you are a potential applicant or are just curious. In this talk to an audience of sixth-formers (High School students) and their families, about the Applied Maths that our undergraduates study at Oxford, Dominic Vella uses everyday examples to explain that Applied Mathematics is about looking afresh at the world around you, looking at scientific problems and using mathematical models to solve them.

One way to think about why frequency of pendulum is independent of mass is that objects of different masses fall to earth at the same acceleration (the Galileo's Pisa tower demo).

Physics and maths are two different things. You use math to describe relationships observed in physics. Physics is a natural science and math is a tool used in it.

If you can do Maths at Oxford then you can do Medicine at Hull/ York and will be far more likely to have a well paid job at the end of your course if you chose the latter.

@@dogwithwigwamz.7320 Oh it's possible you're from the US, in the UK they don't have a problem of certain degrees not being employable. My favourite example to tell people is if you want to be a lawyer, you absolutely don't have to get a law degree in the UK to be a lawyer, instead they pay you while they train you.

Look at the average wages out of uni for maths. U can go into financial and make lots of money if thats what somebody wants. And anyways if someone has a passion for maths, it really doesn't mean they'll b good at medecine, much less have a pasion for that
