The Russians - An intimate journey through Russia (1/2) | DW Documentary

- A very private trip through Russia - a world power with a shrinking population, a myriad of ethnic minorities, and vast distances, a country between tradtion and future.
Encounters with Russians from six different generations help us get to know a Russia beyond Moscow and the Kremlin. Away from the 75th Victory Day parade and displays of military might, we meet the people of Russia. They tell us of a nation poised between tradition and the future. Filmmaker Juri Rescheto travelled through the giant country, meeting with ordinary Russians who share their everyday lives with him. They talk about their joys and sorrows, their hopes and needs, and their experiences - good and bad. The film shows intimate scenes from their homes and their workplaces, as well as glimpses of their political views, their standards of living, and their customs. The protagonists’ personal situations are presented in relation to official Russian studies on the particular generation to which they belong.
In Part 1 we go to a city halfway between Moscow and Novosibirsk to meet Jelena, who works as a surrogate mother in a children’s home. Then we travel to the boreal forest in western Siberia to meet 16-year-old Veronika, who spends most of the year in a boarding school. Her parents are reindeer herders and members of the indigenous Khanty people. The generation of young adults in Russia is represented by Kirill, who holds down a normal job, but spends his free time practicing a dangerous hobby: no holds barred boxing.

I was born in Moscow in 1991. I spent the first 9 months in an orphanage. Those nurses did as much as they could for us with what they had. Bless them and all that they may do now. I hope they are alright.
my brother was too!!
Bless you too. Life without parents presents its challenges.
Where do you live now? I hope you are well 🍀😊
I've been trying to learn russian. Basic words like. Zdorovo is awesome. Krasivay is beautiful. It hard. Also i love russian culture. 🇷🇺
To all orphans around the world, its hard, and i hope you are in a good place in life now
Elena is such a great and caring woman. Without people like her the world would be so horrible. She gives children a future. Let’s all praise her!

Elena (or Jelena, I don't know) you have moved thousands of peoples hearts.
If people like you were heard more, this world would be a better place.
It's written Elena, but pronounced as "Jelena" :D
Those sweet scared children in the begining in the orphanage broke my heart So sad !!! #Elena you are a true Angel for caring for those little ones !!! Also the gov program of Money in exchange for having kids is not a good idea !!! Instead of cash give all Russian people a good quality of life , irrespective of they want to be parent or single !!!
@@ragemodels Why is it not a good idea if they want to raise birth rates? If that's the goal, it makes zero sense to give money to everybody regardless on what they spend it on, and it makes all the sense to give money to parents to buy housing or spend on education. There's so many things to criticise our government about, but this is really not one of the major ones lol. Unless you have actual sources on why it's a bad idea, in which case I would be glad to read them, please do share!
I’m pretty sure it’s Yelena. Also commonly spelled Jelena but you pronounce the Y sound in front of “Elena”

True hero there...Jelena.
My dad was given up to an orphanage too cause family was too poor to take care of 5 kids. He served 4 years in army, built his mom a home, provided jobs to poor people in Canada and always gives to sick kids.

These documentaries about life and culture of people of a certain country, be it Russia or any other nation, expands our outlook and deepens our understanding about them. Western countries as well as us South Asians are so sensitized to the medias portrayal of Russia (not to mention the memes that come with it) that we often forget its a huge country with multiple ethnicities. Thanks DW.

So beautiful native girl, i see another eurasian woman in a documentary of siberia, and i am pretty sure their connection to nature is what makes russian ppl different from its cousins aligned with western culture, folkloric culture of polish, slovenians, croatians, etc is all product of their imagination, all about blood and death (no wonder the most awful satanic metal is from there), but russian folklore is linked to life, to nature, same as americans, once upon a time america was like the USSR, pretty conservative. For today standards russia and his love for the soviet era is like love for conservative values of living in peace and harmony.
I think I'm the North American version of that here in the state of Arizona.
it breaks my heart to see such young human beings, being left alone from their very start. It's unfair. Bless the soul of social workers like Elena who care for the little ones!

Born and raised in USSR (Soviet Belarus), I had to take "Introductory Military Preparedness" courses like everyone else. They teach you to shoot, take care of primary firearm and sidearms, types of ordnance, RPGs, mines, grenades, etc. , how to get out of the line of fire and shoot back quicker, basic hand to hand and bayonet use among other things. This was generally done to shorten the adult service time in the military to 2 yeas or less. But these courses were but a small part of what they taught me. I had to learn carpentry and metal shop skills, to use the lathe and other machinery. I wast taught drafting/technical drawing, music, painting, drawing with a charcoal pencil, even sewing and clothing repair. There were no electives, - you had to take every course I mentioned in addition to your Belarusian, Russian and English, some pretty advanced algebra/calculus, trigonometry, physics, biology, astronomy, chemistry and geography. And gym, of course. This was old Prussian education system which prepared you for life, taught you critical thinking skills, logic and understanding of the scientific method, as well as made you well informed about physical aspects of the world around you. I was really appalled when I found out how dumbed down North American education was by comparison, how it seems to be uniquely constructed to produce adults incapable of informed choice, leaving this as well as critical life skills to colleges and universities. I am really grateful for the education I received in Soviet Belarus. I only wonder how well modern Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian schools fare in comparison.
Hi Telum, thank you very much for sharing your experience with the community ! Stay tuned
There is truth in what you are saying, indeed. I did finish school in a post-soviet country and our system is pretty similar. Though, while studying I could think many of the subjects studied were not useful in life, later on, I realised that, in fact, all of them do have at least an indirect influence and they do offer fundamental skills, including critical and analytical thinking, a good imagination about how various things work, and also an emphasis of spiritual values and not just on socio-moral ones thought by most of the capitalistic societies.
"They teach you to shoot, take care of primary firearm and sidearms, types of ordnance, RPGs, mines, grenades, etc. ,"
(North) American here. Are you saying the above is part of the standard curriculum? For everyone??
@@elac1256 yes, that is what he said
The US System is based on capitalism not war. I was military for 12 years in the US. Let me say that no country compares. I was a Jet Engine Specialist (Heavy), Electrical and Environmental specialist and Fuel Cell specialist along with a license in pharmacy (certified). No country can come close. And I was paid to go to military school. Not a dime was spent. Each time to send a troop to school is $250K US each time. Money well spent. And I was overseas when a Russian jet was shot down. We have the better technology in every front.
Great documentary! Russia is a country full of so many beautiful and resilient people. The baby nurse, Elena, is an angel and a saint. After working a 24-hour shift Elena leaves to go home and take care of her own family! The boarding school for the kids of the nomadic people looked like a really good school too; in addition to traditional subjects, they’re also learning life skills and they’re learning about their culture.
Thanks a lot for watching and sharing your thoughts on this topic, we appreciate it!
Thank you for this documentary. I was born on the Far east of Russia, then moved to Yamal, then to Saint-Petersburg. I saw many different people and heard many different stories. They are all in my heart. Of course, you could not show many people and cities, but thank you for these stories. They are not exotic (like smb is trying to say in the comments). I met girls like Veronika, guys like Kirill and women like Elena in my life. Maybe smb will be angry, that you did not show artists or IT developers, scientists or photographers, but these people that you show (although they seem to be "ordinary" and less interesting for somebody), they exist and they are kind, reliable and ...they are russians. :) Thank you!
I´d rather see someone like Elena a true hero in my eyes than some posh IT developer silicon valley type in his porsche. What she does for all those disatvantaged children is truly magnificent. She should be praised and be seen as what she is a true angel. She is everything BUT ordinary. She is much more than that. You can see and feel what shines through her warm and loving heart. She should be an ideal for every person on earth to strive for. Emotional intelligence is one of if not the most important attribute we humans need and should have as much as possible. People like Elena change the world for the better.
The 3 main people in the documentary all represented themselves at the highest level I think.
Dear Elena, the beauty of your heart resonates through and softens our hearts for Angel mom Elena and those children you tenderly care for.
DW thanks for this brilliant documentary on Russia. Looking forward with anticipation to continue on watching part 2.
From these videos I’m learning more about Russia and its different ethnicities because we only see and hear about the negative things from the media. It gives me a whole new perspective on Russia and its people. It’s a beautiful country with so many natural resources. 🌺❣️
If she wouldn't have said it I would have. That nurse has so much love inside her to give. she is one of those few people you meet who are made for their job. This job matches her soul.
These documentaries are a blessing. Never before have we been able to learn about other cultures, the effect of poverty, and how people manage to survive in a cruel world so easily.
It’s heartbreaking, but personally, I need to learn about this stuff. It makes me appreciate everything much more.
What a beautiful documentary. Thank you so much for it.
The lady who takes care of the children was the best. She says she has so much love to give. I loved it.

Wow. I wish there would be a series of documentaries like these. They are precious and amazing
Really? Documentaries specifically tailored for a customer? Don't you think that truthful impartial documentaries are better than custom made propaganda? Russian country side is anything but this idyllic and happy life. Alcohol and drug abuse, domestic violence, illiteracy, lack of basic amenities (electricity, tarmacked roads, internet, gas etc.) are all extremely common problems. Average work wages and pensions are well bellow any western standards. Environmental destruction and health issues linked to it (communities living in the world's most radioactive pollutions, heavy metal pollutions, etc) is extremely common. Russian countryside is in most cases the last place you'd want to live. Cities founded during Soviet times usually for the purpose of mining anything from uranium, mercury, oil, gas etc. have been left in the same state for decades while Russia invests into armament and therefore they're polluted beyond belief where whole generations are exposed to a poisoned air, water, food...resulting in health problems spanning across generations.
@@boutek I think that's just as important to be shown as this side of things. In fact there was a while where I was looking for documentaries about the USSR, from their perspectives having to be in that environment.

Veronika is one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen... such interesting features... Asiatic features and light eyes... interesting genetics!
Veronika is of Khanty or Mansi ethnicity of Ugric family - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_peoples. There are only around 30 thousand of them combined left and they are indigenous to that area. These are only two of >120 ethnic groups identified in Russia by the census. Russkinskaya, the settlement where Veronika lives, is a place where the culture of the Khanty and Mansi is preserved the best and they have a great museum on open air. A lot of her folks traditionally live in taiga in the small log houses fishing, hunting and often herding deers. They receive state support. At school age kids are brought into the settlements. Many will stay eventually and assimilate, but some will go back. Those who go back usually don't live longer than 50 as they eat a lot of frozen meat and fish; and fish has the parasites (Opisthorchiasis) that damage the liver. Also, genetically they are more vulnerable to alcohol adiction. I grew up around that area, so wanted to share some insight.

This film is a reproduction of unreliable stereotypes and a display of atypical life stories. In Russia, most schools do not have military training, most young people do not practice martial arts, the vast majority of children grow up in normal families, as in other Western countries.
Yeah, but they wanted to show unusual people I guess... Might be to show our culture from the strange sides
True. This film is a western propaganda to show Russia as being military, wild, and aggressive country.
@@user-rp3rb6dm8s For the Western audience this film is not an unusual side of Russia. These are the stereotypes they used to see since the Cold War. The task of the Western media is to reproduce the image of the Russian threat. They need an enemy in order to keep Western society mobilized, which leads to more effective management of the masses. They show the north of Russia and Siberia, where almost no one lives, they show militarized aggressive young people, which we have very few, they show people raised by the state outside their family, of whom there are very few in Russia. But this image of Russians is very well suited for the purposes of their propaganda.

I like living in the town, I like having modern things (like mobile signal), but I'll always be from the woods.
I just know Veronika will have an abundant life, achieving her career goal, enjoying life in the town, and going back to the woods when she needs to be among those trees that are in her bones ♥️
Good luck to her
I appreciate this doc. I grew up with many nice Russian friends here in the US. I believe we are all people who want fulfillment in life. Thank you friends 🙂
Beautiful country & beautiful strong divise people 💓💓💓
Russia is a very interesting country with very intelligent people! Never listen to what it is said, live it and you will see!
Сам себя не похвалишь - никто не похвалит, верно?
Он сказал правду. Какие проблемы?
It is not. The education system is not good, most people are close minded. Not sure where the intelligence lies. Oh, wait! It's in the minds of Westerners who fetishise russia and russian nationalists....

Thank you Alena Voyka, there's nothing i can do or provide help in any other way but to say THANK YOU
I cant even express my respect and admiration for this nurse Jelena. She is an angel, a saint. I wish her nothing but love, happiness in life and that god may reward her richly for her incredible work as being a mother for thousands and thousands of children.
She is an incredible person. What are your impressions of Russia from this video? I'd be fascinated to know your opinion. I'm also a substantial fan of this channel and I additionally create videos with regards to life in Russia. However the youtube algorithm has actually not been as kind to me yet. Almost all people who views my videos states that it is excellent, but not many get to watch it. Can you be extremely honest and say exactly how I can improve my vlogs? I value your truthful point of view.
I really enjoyed this one. The choice of people's stories, the way it was shot, the editing, the music and so much more was top notch! This makes me want to go there and explore the place and people. Great work DW and look forward to more excellent videos! Warm regards from Australia :)
I agree with you. Editing, shots, music etc all top notch. Just a shame it's got nothing to do with reality. It's clearly another custom made "documentary" probably a contract from Russian government. DW has proven many times before that they're not about objective reporting and are happy to take any job for a good pay. Just check their blatantly anti Tesla "documentary" custom made for (and paid by) the German car industry. Russian country side is anything but nice and idyllic like shown here. Alcoholism, domestic violence, illiteracy etc is rife. Basic amenities like running water, gas, sewage system or even electricity are often unheard of and life as we know it is on completely another level.
Absolutely great documentary, DW is often the best of RUclips!
Propagandist
I have learned so much from your channel. Very informative.
Since 3 years, I have come here, it is a great documentary.
Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate Elena's kindness and love towards her work.
You have made something very beautiful. Much respect for the film makers and the fine people who shared their lives. This is the finest documentary I've seen in many years
Congratulations DW for another quality documentary. Keep the standards of journalisms, so far you rank first on my list or maybe the only on my list.
Agreed
The state doesn't care about children, the sick, the disabled, anybody, you have no idea how much, everything depends only on people like Elena, working for little pay.
But there's a lot of these people, I am proud of them
The girl with the plaits is so beautiful and articulate, i love the story of how she was born in the forwst and hoq they live it actually is a very atmospheric documentry. Elena is a kind and caring person and she genuinely loves those kids. Im sure it warms the parents hearts to know how their kids are being cared for since its warmed my heart totally.
Keep it up Kirill. Stay strong and training!!!
Nice to see something different about Russia and its beautiful people. Once again the lesson is the same, even in our differences we are all the same...just normal people trying to live, survive, love, culture and family. Thanks DW.
Do you know that more than 160 people of different nationalities who speak their own language live in Russia. Population of some of them is more than 1 million, but some are very small and live on limited territories. I often surf on Google and RUclips to find and learn about life and culture of various minorities such as Evenki, Chukchi, Koryak. Yakuts, etc. or peoples of Africa. It is very interesting, informative and will develop in you more respect to these people.
i think u mean ethnicities. nationality means what ur passport is, muppet
これは何?いちご no, he is right about nationalities . Russia is a Federation and Therefore Consists of Many States, it is written in the Constitution of Russian Federation.

I love these documentaries. Seeing the cultures of so many different people and how we are all alike in our own way is amazing! The filmography is beautiful too
Hi @Julie D,
We're really glad you like them! Thanks for watching and for the positive feedback. We always appreciate it when our viewers share their thoughts.

You obviously enjoy watching subtle propaganda. Subtle, but propaganda nonetheless less.
This is exactly what i needed

Goodness I wish I could adopt a few of these kids. They need so much love and care
I really enjoyed this! Living in the U.S., it's easy to remain ignorant of how people in other countries live, and we have an especially warped view of Russia and Russian people. I love how good journalism can share so much, just by depicting things as they are. Of course, there is always an angle, and there are things they choose to include or exclude that can affect the narrative, but I appreciate the perspective regardless. I'm excited to watch part 2!
Amazing country and the people so generous and kind !! Beautiful documentary !!!
Thanks for posting this documentary. So interesting to see how others live, and thank God for people like the professional mother who cares for all those small children.

A little bit disappointed. These stories are “exotic”, I’d say. I live in a town which is closest to Russinskaya, but it also takes at least 2,5 hours to get there. I am impressed that they did it.
I mean, I live so close and have learned about khanti for several years at school and even for me it all sounds so strange and exotic. Anyway, please, do not think that it is a typical life of a Russian.
Ты не пуп России, если для тебя экзотика это не значит, что это так на самом деле. Ты не знаешь, как живет Россия в разных ее частях. Для кого-то, например ненца, тувинца или кумык, ты и твоя жизнь экзотика, и что теперь?
Yeah seems that way. I mostly grew up in the US, but am originally from Moscow. The biggest difference I remember between the countries is the US was way more hostile, aggressive, rude, and fake, and the food in the US is awful and tastes so bad. I had a lot of people be very racist against me for being Russian, even adults to me as a kid(I came in the 90’s). Other than that, it seems the same? I don’t think I could go back, because I grew up here and everything I know is here now. 🤷🏼♀️
Well, I spent 15 years in the small city ( 40 000 inhabitants) in Yamalo-Nenetskiy region (north of the western Siberia as well). I saw many khanty and mansi people. Some of them brought fish and meat to sell on sunday market, some came to buy oil, fuel , instruments or other things, some got apartment to live from the government and they moved to our city. And boarding school for their kids was in our city as well. Yes, it's exotic for somebody from Krasnodar, Moscow or maybe even Tyumen, but not for people from Khanty-Mansiisky region or Yamalo-Nenetskiy region. Perhaps you get use to live your life and not really interested in people around you. It's absolutely fine, but don't say that it's very exotic - it's not true.
@@ankida Really surprised to hear this, moved from a post-soviet sate to US for 1.5 years, and I remember very well, that it seemed so strange how kind people are. And the other way around when I came back. Everyone home is so rude, cashiers, strangers.
PaconskY I don’t know what to tell you. From grown adult men herding me away from my mom in a grocery store to tell me I’m evil and should go back to my country, to kids in school openly leaving me out and telling me to go back. I remember one time in even 4th grade I think, a boys father came in for career day and talked about being in the air force, and being a thunder bird, and his son and the entire group table starts yelling at me so much he had to stop and defend me, which surprised me, because I was so used to getting harassed. I still mostly don’t want anything to do with people.

I absolutely loved watching this documentary and look forward to part 2. Beautifully filmed, edited & put together. Non-intrusive non-manipulative approach so we just see what is really there rather than a set narrative. What a collection of wonderful humans in this! I wish them all good things in the future. Watching in lockdown isolation, this is far better for the soul than the sensationalised fiction on netflix
