I was 8 years old when I heard this band for the first time. And it's thanks to them that I started listening to rock. In the 70s, The Sweet was part of the "Glam Rock" musical movement. The group still exists but only with the guitarist, the other 3 have died. They started in 1968 and have sold, I think, over 40 million albums. Thank you for this analysis.

Queen did their best to sound like Sweet.
Whatever Sweet did, Queen tried to copy.

Urban dictionary says 'Sweet FA' is nowadays taken to mean 'sweet f*** all' i.e. nothing. It is also suggests that this is an alternative way of saying 'Sweet Fanny Adams', which means the same thing - nothing, in other words.

They wanted to call the album Sweet F*ck All but RCA wouldn't let them so they changed the name to Sweet Fanny Adams which means the same as Sweet F*ck All in British slang. IE, it means "Nothing".

Sweet F.A. was from their second album called Sweet F.A. Their third album Desolation Boulevard was released in 2 versions. The RCA for Europe and the Capitol version for United States, Canada and Japan. They put Sweet F.A. on the Capitol release. Fox On The Run, Solid Gold Brass and The Six Teens was the only three songs that was on both versions. The Capitol track list looks more like a compilation of hits from Sweet F.A. and singles.
Check out songs like No You Don't, Spotlight, Breakdown, Set Me Free and Turn It Down. There are a phenomenal live performance with several of these tracks from Musikladen 1974.

You've finally gotten a tase of Sweet. Looks like you enjoyed it. Hopefully you've checked out more since your first listen? I'd recommend any of their albums between Sweet Fanny Adams(1974) and Off the Record(1977). They definitely have many sides to them and are quite versatile but their hard and heavy stuff is a highlight for me. My favorite song of theirs is Set Me Free.

  • @NoLegalPlunder

This song is a perfect example of how they were a bridge between the heavy metal of Sabbath, Priest & Purple and new metal like Maiden. In fact, Sweet's guitarist Andy Scott even produced an album by NWOBHM band AIIZ. By-the-way, Mick Tucker is a major league drummer.

This was probably Sweet at their heaviest. It has extremely misogynistic lyrics but it was a deliberately provocative retort for some criticism they were receiving around that time: "people think we fake it" and then "all a bluff", so a bit tongue in cheek. From memory, this song, as well as being off the brilliant Sweet Fanny Adams album, was also the B side of single The Sixteens. As people mention here, Set Me Free is a masterpiece of rock, with real Ace of Spades vibes. My fav. of that album is Restless.

Sweet began recording the songs on Sweet F.A. In 1972 but after an incident when someone kicked Brian Connolly in the throat, it was delayed. It was released in April of 1974. This was their second album. The band formed in 1968. Queen’s first album also came out in 1974. Queen formed in 1970They were contemporaries and both albums were recorded in London. I’m sure Queen was inspired by some of what Sweet were doing. If you get a chance, there are some RUclips videos of performances for Musikladen that a kick a$$.
