Jon you know music bud, 0zzy in my opinion not only is his voice unique its the band he has as well that makes him look sound even better He always had the best guitarits , best drummers, and basist. Can you imagine if guns n roses with ozzy as lead singer it would probably be badass cause there really good as well.
I get a little misty eyed, sometimes, realizing that this is the last song on the last studio record that Randy ever played on... and it was absolutely epic! He was a shooting star! I can't even begin to imagine what Randy's next record would've sounded like!
Randy was a master on the acoustic in classical and the electric..he knew how to combine them to make them masterpieces...A LEGEND !! imagine what he could've put together through the years..great reaction
This song is a masterpiece composed by the late great legendary Randy Rhoads. Ozzy had very little to do if anything with this album except for sang the Lyrics that were written by Bob Daisley. And vocal melodies were provided by Lee Kerslake.. Ozzy diddnt even know what to think of this when he heard it. Because of the lyrics and time signature changes he diddnt understand. And it has to be explained to him. This was composed and recorded in about 2 weeks because of the push of jet records . Randy felt rushed and wished he had more time and wasn't really happy with the end product. Long live the legacy of Randy Rhoads who will be inspiring generations forever with his greatness.
@JohnSlopReacts your very welcome. I just always try to set the record straight so credit goes where it should. Not to cut down Ozzy. He has a very distinct voice and is a legendary frontman. But the only reason he has the status he does today is because of the talent that he has surrounded himself with over the years. After fired from Sabbath he was a washed up addict. And had very little chances of resurrecting his career because he diddnt have any say or Input with Sabbath, couldn't play an instrument, and really diddnt know how music worked besides singing lyrics written by others. If it wasn't for Dana strum and Randys mom Delores finally persuading Randy to go audition.( Randy diddnt want to because he had 60 students a week and was in Quiet Riot that was his baby that he started at 16) ozzy wouldn't be what we know today. And he knows it. That's why at his recent RRHOF induction for his solo Career he said "if I had never met a guy by the name of Randy Rhoads, I don't think I would be sitting here right now" . - Ozzy Osbourne. I was so happy to see Randy was inducted 3 years before ozzy under the musical excellence catagory. I was surprised that they really got it right. But there was pressure from other musicians to make it happen.
Happy New Year. Thanks for your excellent reaction. This is my favorite Ozzy solo track. What a brilliant band he had in place, with Ozzy providing one of his greatest vocal performances.
While Over the Mountain is what made me buy the album back in 82 , I grew to love every song . But what stands out to me some 40+ years later is the lead work on You cant kill rock n roll. Randys guitar the tonel, the notes, the bends, the sounds, the nuances sounds like his guitar is csreaming for help at times, to this day i picture him standing there with his foot one some incredible wah pedal, sure dont sound like a crybaby, sound like literally a wah from hell , & its so good. The periodic high frequency feedback, almost like a mic feedback. ..... Anywy yeh whole album is awesome but for me You cant kill rock n roll really makesa me feel someething & its mainly due to Randys tone & playing. Just accents teh song & takles it to much higher places.
I've seen a couple thousand live music performances so far in this life. Seeing Randy, Rudy, Tommy and Ozzy play this song live on this tour (just a few months before Randy was killed) will always remain one of the most memorable. That outro for Diary filled the 17,000 seat arena and swirled around the entire hall, then climbed into my head. That was 1981 and it's still swirling around up there. Since then I've seen Ozzy live more times than I can remember. The only thing close to that event, was seeing him a year later at the US Festival with a crowd of over 400,000 people. By the time he got half way through Revelation Mother Earth, he had tears streaming down his face. He was overcome with the concept of playing before that many people, just a few short years after his career was by all accounts over. Randy was special and I'm incredibly fortunate to have seen him play at that time.
I was one of the fortunate who saw Ozzy live with Randy, and I didn't even know how epic that would be. Imagine the music Randy would have made had he lived to a ripe old age.
After all these years..(I remember the day this came out) I NEVER got tired of this song and album..!!! It still gives me chills to hear such an amazing track.
Randy was such an incredible at composition. He doesn't worry or care about the genre and whether it fits. He is only concerned with the cohesion of his guitar parts working perfectly with Ozzy's phrasing and timing vocally. Which,....as you can clearly hear,.....Randy frames every verse, bridge, and chorus perfectly. It conveys perfectly what the song says. RIP Randy Rhoades.
Thank you for the respect of my generations music. My personal opinion, the best rock ‘n’ roll music that ever came out and I was one of the privileged enjoy every minute of it.
Ppl can say what they want about Ozzy.. he's been apart of creating some of the best music ever made..im so glad i was 18 rocking to these powerhouse songs ..i recommend following ozzy and the insane musicians he's employed 👍🔥 enjoy
A lot of folks think S.A.T.O. stands for Sail Across the Ocean, which would make sense with the lyrics. It was actually a working title that stuck. It was the intials of the two women at the studio. Sharon Arden, Thelma Osbourne.
An amazing tune that scared the hell out of me in concert... back when the album toured with Gillis. It just occurred to me that this is a perfect bookend to the original Black Sabbath opening song. In 68 a scared, stoned young hippie with a figure in black pointing at him is now - 12 years later - doomed.
Ozzy had little to do with the composition and recording of this song. Randy, Bob and Lee were the principal writers of the music. Lee wrote the lyrics. The three of them were given carte blanche in the studio. Ozzy only came in when it was time to record vocals. When Ozzy first heard the arrangement, he had no idea how to put a vocal line to it and remarked, "Who do you think I am? Frank Zappa?"
what I think so far is ive been listening to this album for about 30 years....its what do you think. I didnt experience this album like you did though. we didnt have internet back then or cell phones yet. but we had weed and alcohol and record player and we would skip school to compare our findings with each other and what we found at the music store. I bought alot of my albums based off of the artwork. if it looked metal then id but it or steal it. haha so different back then. its unreal im watching it all slowly disappear but nice seeing younger generations get into it and experiencing it their own way
I don't know if you know this, but the "sinisterness" of some of the chords, progressions and solo include the flat 5 or diminished chord. I don't play guitar anymore and my theory is rusty, but essentially, flattting the 5th is what makes for an eerie or unsettling sound.
Masterpiece. Randy was a genius along with Bob Daisley. Great team. The Blizzard band was incredible. By the way Bob wrote the Lyrics. Yes the whole album is a Masterpiece.
Great reaction John! Very real and heart-felt. Love it. Check out "You Can't Kill Rock & Roll". Many of the same type of vibes on it that I think you'll enjoy. I just subscribed!! 🤘
Back in the day, we thought that this was composed by Randy and Bob Daisley. But we know now that it was always Sharon who wrote everything and made all of the good decisions and who in no way has ever done anything to sully Ozzy’s legacy.
Please take your time to read the book "For Facts Sake" by Bob Daisley. It details the dynamics of Ozzy and Sharon in terms of their interactions with other musicians I lost all the respect for him after reading that book.
Regarding the time signature, the verse is in 7/4, and the chorus in 6/8. This is hands down my favorite Ozzy song. Indeed, it is a metal masterpiece.
My fav. As well.
Rip Randy!!!
This whole album but especially this song is an absolute masterpiece
Another song I highly recommend is "Tonight." The song itself is a great song, but Randy's exit solo is epic. You should check it out.
I absolutely wore this album out !! One of the best metal albums of all time!!!
One of my favorite albums.
The entire album is just Incredible.
I got to see Ozzy on this tour a few weeks before Randy died.
Legendary is right!!!
Jon you know music bud, 0zzy in my opinion not only is his voice unique its the band he has as well that makes him look sound even better
He always had the best guitarits , best drummers, and basist.
Can you imagine if guns n roses with ozzy as lead singer it would probably be badass cause there really good as well.

He was a shooting star!
I can't even begin to imagine what Randy's next record would've sounded like!
Such a classic...I was 11yrs old when I got this cassette for my birthday. Changed my life...🤘
Reactors need to deep dive Ozzy more. "You can't kill rock n roll" is a great one to do. Same album
Sarebbe da recensire tutto l' album, è un capolavoro assoluto!
Yes, that intro alone for that one is brilliant. Randy Rhoads so creative.
Multiple songs within a song > Diary of a Madman
You are correct. Greatest Classic Metal track of all time, IMO
Randy was a master on the acoustic in classical and the electric..he knew how to combine them to make them masterpieces...A LEGEND !! imagine what he could've put together through the years..great reaction
RANDY IS A LEGEND !!! STILL MY NUMBER ONE GUY SINCE THE EARLY 80'S. I'M 53 AND BEEN PLAYING SINCE I HEARD HIM BACK THEN ....CHEERS !
This song is a masterpiece composed by the late great legendary Randy Rhoads. Ozzy had very little to do if anything with this album except for sang the Lyrics

Haha Ozzy's a trooper. Would love to be a fly on the wall while he attempts to grasp the song. Thanks for the info!

Hey Happy New Year to you as well!
My all-time favorite album and all-time favorite song.
I’ve been listening to this song since it first came out. It’s still my all time favorite Ozzy or Black Sabbath song!
A CLASSIC!!!! This whole album is LEGENDARY!!! "Flying High Again", "Over the Mountain", "You Can't Kill Rock n Roll", all of them really lol
While Over the Mountain is what made me buy the album back in 82 , I grew to love every song . But what stands out to me some 40+ years later is the lead work on You cant kill rock n roll. Randy was special and I'm incredibly fortunate to have seen him play at that time.
Before he died he was wanting to do more classical music
The correct reaction ever..you were speechless ❤
Randy was just getting started, RIP Randy Rhoads your surely missed...
I was one of the fortunate who saw Ozzy live with Randy, and I didn't even know how epic that would be. Imagine the music Randy would have made had he lived to a ripe old age.
This song is pure genius and brilliant.
Randy changed my life. Excellent reaction. Subscribed.
After all these years..(I remember the day this came out) I NEVER got tired of this song and album..!!! It still gives me chills to hear such an amazing track.

A masterpiece.
For the intro, Randy double tracked it by using nylon strings for one and steel strings for the other.
The intro was based on Leo Brouwer's Simple Etude #6.
Beautiful how musicians keep all genres alive. Thanks for the info!
This is a masterpiece..end ..jesus i never get sick of hearing this..this wont be your last time hearing this my friend
Great song! Great reaction! Memories of just getting my license and blasting this as loud as we could!🤘🎸🤘
I agree It is my all time favorite song Grew up on this album
...now I wait for "Over the Mountain"
The crowning ächievement of this particular line up.
Thank you for the respect of my generations music. My personal opinion, the best rock ‘n’ roll music that ever came out and I was one of the privileged enjoy every minute of it.
Bob wrote the words Randy composed the music direction.
One of Ozzys' best album's.
Killer album! Blizzard of Ozz is great too!
Bro. Welcome to my era. God bless ya brother. You're a good dude. Love from Texas.
I feel good that people will still be listening to this stuff after we are gone and I think you will also.
S.A.T.O. sail across the ocean 🤘🔥🤘as an old man this song gets me so emotional.. some of the best music ever made..will be around forever 👍
For sure! Nothing can top this epic masterpiece. This entire album is the best.
Imagine hearing it for the first time when it was new and no one knew.
The first album Blizzard of Oz. Lee Kerslake played the drums basically straight forward. On Dairy of a Madman. He really cuts loose.
"That was the most epic outro ever" I tend to agree. Check out also Revelation/Mother Earth from his first
the lyrics are as menacing as the music of a mad man losing control Perfectly done.
The time signature in the verse is 7/4 and prechorus is 3/4. 4/4 in the bridge before the solo.
The entire album is epic
This record is in my Top 10 of all time. Diary is one of those once in a lifetime tracks. It's on lots of famous metal players top lists.
It's N.A.T.O., only with more Satan
An amazing tune that scared the hell out of me in concert... back when the album toured with Gillis.
It just occurred to me that this is a perfect bookend to the original Black Sabbath opening song.
In 68 a scared, stoned young hippie with a figure in black pointing at him is now - 12 years later - doomed.
Diary of a Madman is literally my favorite Ozzy song. Ever.
I forgot about Lee Kerslake being in the group. He played with Uriah Heep for many years..
By far my favorite Ozzy track. I am a huge fan of almost all of it but this one is special.😎
I totally agree with you, Ozzy's best song.
I forgot how good this was
More Ozzy! This album, and also Bark at the Moon. \m/ \m/
Correct. Except that Bob Daisley wrote the Lyrics. Lee wrote the vocal melody.
@@seanentrikin9263 Thanks for the clarification!
S.A.T.O. from the same album are phenomenal. Guitar, bass and drums are over the top
I've always thought and heard it was in 7/8 time signature.
A metal tour de force MASTERPIECE! PINNACLE STUFF!
Randy and Bob Daisley came up with the music
the song is about a mad man that believes the towns people are trying to eat him
what I think so far is ive been listening to this album for about 30 years....its what do you think. I didnt experience this album like you did though. we didnt have internet back then or cell phones yet. but we had weed and alcohol and record player and we would skip school to compare our findings with each other and what we found at the music store. Randy Rhodes was a awesome guitar player and songwriter
Ozzy's best solo album.
It's a 5 out of 5.
I miss you Randy!!!
Masterpiece. Randy was a genius along with Bob Daisley. Great team. The Blizzard band was incredible. By the way Bob wrote the Lyrics. Yes the whole album is a Masterpiece.
This is his best album RIP Randy Rhoades
🌴🇬🇺 EXCELLENT ANALOGY 👍🔥🌋🔥 Welcome to the never again duplicated metal masterpiece duo of Ozzy n Randy
Randy/Rudy...
Time is like 7 or something
( Maybe some 6's, and Moody Blues too)
Knights in white satin
Bob Daisley....
I remember when this came out I was 13
Yes!
Fun Fact : Lee Kerslake was the drummer for Uriah Heep for many years during their most famous time prior to being in Blizzard of Oz
And Tommy Aldridge was drummer for Black Oak Arkansas.
Ozzy was a fucking musical genius.
Great reaction John! Very real and heart-felt. Love it. Check out "You Can't Kill Rock & Roll". Many of the same type of vibes on it that I think you'll enjoy. I just subscribed!! 🤘
Best Ozzy song ever.
Back in the day, we thought that this was composed by Randy and Bob Daisley.
But we know now that it was always Sharon who wrote everything and made all of the good decisions and who in no way has ever done anything to sully Ozzy’s legacy.
S.A.T.O was "Satan of the Ocean...not a bad track on either of the first 2 solo albums..both are classics
Lord of this world... Into the void.... Planet caravan.... Sabbath bloody Sabbath... Solitude... Heaven and hell...
FYI ... EVERYTHING RANDY RECORDED IS EPIC !!!
This is all Daisley and Rhoads…
This is easy....all you have to give up, is everything.
Randy Rhodes was pure genius and is too often forgotten in the greatest guitarists of all time debate 3:55
Diary of a Madman, to me, was Ozzy’s best
It's like prog metal.
New subscriber. If you haven't already, listen to Mr. Crowley from Blizard of Oz. Rhoads' best solo, imho!
Another song that ozzy got credit for and didnt have Anything to do with writing. This was written by Bob Daisley
SATO is short for Sharon A. T. Osbourne. Idk her maiden name
Sharon Arden Thelma Osbourne.
0:41 apparently Sharon removed the bass & drums because it was better
🎼🤘🏻
😂😂😂🎸🔥🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🚬👍🏻
The original 81 release is better than the later reissue.
✨️✨️RANDY RHOADS STILL THE BEST OF THE BEST. ✨️✨️
Why would anyone ask that they be played in reverse order? That's just stupid.
It cuts deep doesn’t it ?….
Please take your time to read the book "For Facts Sake" by Bob Daisley.
It details the dynamics of Ozzy and Sharon in terms of their interactions with other musicians
I lost all the respect for him after reading that book.
