Someone is not paying attention, One Piece World is as fucked up as Berserk or even more but you as a reader are basically reading the story from Luffy's POV. Every story in OP could easily fit inside a Berserk side story.

I actually think a series with two main protagonists that would have the same dynamic between someone as happy go lucky as Luffy and someone as battle hardened and vengeful as Guts, would be pretty cool, and they could learn a lot from each other and cause each other to grow. One could teach the other that there is hope and friendship and pull them out of the darkness they are in, and the other could teach how to fight back and remain strong and resilient even in the face of the very worst, most cruel harsh realities the world has to offer. Yeah, that could actually work. Well done Dan, thanks for giving me this idea.

Daniel Greene with that top tier character development from respectful anime/manga unenjoyer to fan. I'd kind of love to see a skit of Spike Spiegel as he sits monologuing about the past while Eren sits monologuing about the future whilst Luffy just sort of sits awkwardly between them.
One piece and berserk are excellent fist choices for reading manga. I recommend Gintama too. It is the only piece of literature that can consistently make you laugh until you cry.

For the people drawing comparisons between Shabondy and the Eclipse, I think that this isn't really a fair assessment. Part of what made the Eclipse so harrowing is the fact that the Band of the Hawk was already kind of broken, and then they were betrayed in an ultimately vile manner by the person they trusted above all else. This betrayal of trust and the recontextualisation of the entire Band of the Hawk's relationships and dynamics was integral to what made the Eclipse so terrifying. The Shabondy moment, on the other hand, was mostly just a one-sided massacre by someone the Strawhats didn't really know. It came out of nowhere, there was no betrayal, it wasn't nearly as violent and belief-shattering the Eclipse, and argueably wasn't as scary either. Sure, for Luffy and the Crew, the thought that they were about to be separated from their family was horrible, but I think the demonic landscape and atmosphere of the Eclipse paired with, again, the betrayal, was on another level entirely.
To be fair, Luffy's situation could be possible because he is the leader of the group. Meanwhile Guts has to experience all that misery because he put the fate of his comfort zone in the hand of a wrong person. Because to be honest if they didn't have Griffith, Band of the Hawk would be as fun as SHP

This led Guts to close off his heart for a bit, before being conned into opening it again to the wrong person. Meanwhile Luffy never had to make that compromise and since he didn't, he's willing to rely on others. It doesn't hurt that he's also the boss and thus never had to deal with power over him the way that Guts did.

I really like how this interpretation of Guts really represents how I think all of us felt after reading the eclipse, but seeing how much Guts has grown during the conviction and ESPECIALLY millennium falcon arcs it's kinda funny how Guts does grow a bit closer to luffy's way of thinking (although way less willing and optimistic)
If Luffy met Grifith, he would hit him with that celestial god Punch and the story would be over. The difference is Luffy isnt susceptible to emotional manipulation as Guts is.
The really wack thing about luffy is the fact that this reaction would be 100% accurate, and then luffy would proceed to NOT GIVE A FLYING FUCK about whatever the heck he went through in the past and still go ahead at throwing himself to guts until he (SOMEHOW??????) befriends him.
To me it would be like adding another Zoro to the group. Guts is a dude that has lived a horrible life and he'd come to realize that is also true of his new crew too, but where he tried to close himself off, they chose to never do that. And I've no doubt that Luffy listens to his story, cries about it in front of him and promises that he'll never let that happen to him again while he's on his crew, completely meaning it. Likewise Luffy saying that Guts is his friend is all it would take for him to look at a group of near omnipotent eldritch god horrors and say that he's going to give them hell. XD
i think guts would actually end up liking luffy. he's strong, can pull through on his promises. and would do anything to protect those he likes. guts won't do any harm to him because luffy doesn't give any reason to at first meeting and would actually end up being his friend. luffy is just a very likable personality

I really like how this interpretation of Guts really represents how I think all of us felt after reading the eclipse, but seeing how much Guts has grown during the conviction and ESPECIALLY millennium falcon arcs it's kinda funny how Guts does grow a bit closer to luffy's way of thinking (although way less willing and optimistic)

The really wack thing about luffy is the fact that this reaction would be 100% accurate, and then luffy would proceed to NOT GIVE A FLYING FUCK about whatever the heck he went through in the past and still go ahead at throwing himself to guts until he (SOMEHOW??????) befriends him.

I honestly think a story where a character like Guts has to team up with a group like the Strawhats would be pretty cool tbh.
To me it would be like adding another Zoro to the group. Guts is a dude that has lived a horrible life and he'd come to realize that is also true of his new crew too, but where he tried to close himself off, they chose to never do that.
And I've no doubt that Luffy listens to his story, cries about it in front of him and promises that he'll never let that happen to him again while he's on his crew, completely meaning it.
Likewise Luffy saying that Guts is his friend is all it would take for him to look at a group of near omnipotent eldritch god horrors and say that he's going to give them hell. XD

i think guts would actually end up liking luffy. he's strong, can pull through on his promises. and would do anything to protect those he likes. guts won't do any harm to him because luffy doesn't give any reason to at first meeting and would actually end up being his friend. luffy is just a very likable personality
