People complaining about the long One Piece videos are not realizing that these serve a different purpose than regular reviews. When Daniel reviews a book he is basically selling a book and not trying to spoil it. He is telling us whether the destination is worth it. However when it comes to One Piece when you’re 600+ chapters in the series is already sold. This is about Daniel going on the journey that is One Piece and everyone enjoying watching his reactions and views on the series. Here the object is not about the destination but the journey along the way and with a series that has over 1,000 chapters it is a glorious journey.

Punk Hazard I feel is the “Thriller Bark” of the Post-Time Skip era of One Piece but it’s amazing that the, in my opinion, weakest arc was done so soon because the next 300+ chapters are the most dense but best that One Piece has to offer. It’s all highs from up here on out.

When it comes to OP post-time skip, Oda became more ambitious with his arcs. The arcs are much more interconnected and the arcs themself became much heavier with content. One downside of this is that the individual arcs are less focused and it becomes harder to feel like you got enough out of an arc based on the chapter count.
In my personal opinion, I think this change paid off in the long run. The fact that the arcs are so connected makes for a more coherent narrative. There is not a single arc post-time skip that has gotten worse with time. A lot of them feel better on reread and when you know what the set-up leads to.

    • @chidi329

Beautifully said. Oda’s writing is so long term and intentional that we’re still be shocked by things he set up in CHAPTER 1!!
I won’t spoil anything ofc but when you have an author who connect things together so incredibly, then the smaller arcs like PH don’t feel as riveting in comparison to the arcs that are almost separate stories on their own

I would argue the strongest part of One Piece was from Sabaody until the timeskip, for many reasons: (Manga Spoilers about the structure/narrative of current arcs below!)
      1) Pacing:
Sabaody started at Chapter 490 and Marineford ended at Chapter 580. In less than 100 chapters so many great moments happened, I never truly felt bored reading it. Compared to that the current arc is already at 100+ chapters ALONE. More than all these arcs together.
      2) High stakes (for One Piece standards)
Let's be honest, if not for some deaths Marineford wouldn't be half as epic. Right now allthough the current arc should feel very tense, it just doesn't. Everything is going smoothly.
      3) Each arc was original
Marineford was an epic war, Impel Down a heist/rescue mission and Sabaody also felt different. Right now in the current arc it's the same formula we already know. Evil ruler, Luffy befriends locals and fights for them but we already had that so many times...sure the enemies are stronger but so is our crew. Just feels like Dressrosa/Alabasta all over again just with higher power levels.
I feel like the current arcs really would benefit from different narratives and higher stakes again while going back to a faster pacing.

    • @chidi329
      @chidi329 2 года назад +18

@@grizzpy9995 ok you make some good points and some points I have contention with so let me address it all
      1. Pacing: Oda is like a kid who does too much when he only needs to do so little. Does it mess with the pacing? Yes but the “too much” isn’t necessarily bad content. No matter how long an arc can get it just feels too fun to make me stop. Yes ik it makes One Piece longer but it also becomes more enjoyable for me which is fine!
I get the hate on that but for me after 20 years i just give up on complaining about it when it’s bad and rather praise him for it when he does it well! It’s a very low flaw for Oda because his writing is so good. Agree or no?
      2. “High Stakes”
Not tryna be disrespectful but I put high stakes in quotes cause I think some readers still aren’t sure what Oda considers the stakes to be in this story. Death is not always a high stake. Death for Oda is like a spice that makes food taste better SOMETIMES, but isn’t always necessary. Marine Ford was an example of necessary and the rest of One Piece he sprinkled it in here and there. But the stakes for One Piece has always been achieving one’s dream. And death does not always crush that dream as we see with a certain prominent figure in Wano. But if someone is beaten down and fully has their dream seemingly taken from them (like Luffy losing his crew at Sabaody was a direct demolishing of his dream to become Pirate King at that time). And I mean our main character doesn’t even kill anyone in the series so why she we expect the author to do with the bloodthrist that (some) people have for him to use. I don’t really get it outside of a few fake out deaths that tbh don’t affect me whether they’re alive or not.
      3. Arc Originality
I kinda get this point the most but I don’t see how the arcs have lost any originality since then. Yeah they have HUGE OVERLOOMING connections to the greater story but everything that happens in an arc feels very unique and random (meeting Kinemon and working with Smoker and Law are my examples in this arc) to the point that it’s still fun to go along while keeping in the back of your head “so where are we going with this?”
And if you think the evil ruler shtick is old then you must’ve hated a lot of this story cause that’s been the situation from day 1. Arlong, Alabasta, Drum, Enies Lobby (that one showed us the evil rulers of the whole WORLD), etc etc. The entirety of One Piece is Luffy’s morals defeating random evil rulers so I don’t think that’s lost any meaning on me cause the villains continue to get more nuanced and dangerous, even Caesar although he wasn’t that dangerous as Daniel said.
So overal while the MarineFord saga did allow us to go to different arcs that seemingly had different purposes. It was still just heat the bad person ruling the area and Luffy making allies along the way of it. I don’t think the next arcs or the previous ones lose originality points as a result of it cause it MEANS something unlike other stories.
But I get the criticism and I honestly appreciate your forming of thoughts cause it’s one of the more respectable ways I’ve heard people critic One Piece.

Like sanji is the one who chooses to help the samurai find the rest of his body due to his sense of honor (which is why law has enough time to make the deal with luffy.) Sanji feels responsible for the samurai and this has a huge impact on the story in the future, plot wise.

On an actual review note, did you happen to watch Merphy's video on PH as well? She brought up some lowkey redeeming moments for Sanji when his horny level wasn't over 9000. Namely his interaction with the samurai and his awareness of the condition of Nami's body; like when he was concerned if her body would be strained by his swimming technique. Not to mention, once he was back in his own body, he cried in happiness that it was his body that got wrecked and that his body was able to protect her while she was a passenger in it. That said, in no way cancels his idiotic horny boy moments, but I think they are still good moments in their own right.

The nose bleeds, a massive manga trope, were in direct reasoning from him spending all that time on an island with no good looking females. But by the end he was shaking it off. In this arc with the body swap into Nami, Oda literally did most things we almost expect a guy to do if put in a women's body, but Sanji is a simp and must dial it to 10. But Sanji does still does some reflecting on his actions when he needs to retrieve the samurais midsection from the lake.

Sanji in namis body was hilariius because of sanji(in nami) and zoros interactions were pure gold...... Franky in choopers body and his interactions with robin...... Sanji later on bantering with zoro...... Zoros amazing fight....... Introducing kinemon and momonuske who are one of my fav non strawhat charecters...... And ofc LAW was here......
This arc heavily foreshadows and perfectly sets up future arcs while also being entertaining in its own right was amazing to me. Also the worldbuilding is top tier here which can only be appreciated as u read later stuff
But i cna understand why ppl dont like.....

There’s so much setup in this arc I’m pretty sure not all of it has even paid off yet in the current story. Literally a chapter published like three weeks ago has a moment that directly parallels a scene in punk hazard in a way that makes it pretty clear Oda had at least the broad strokes in mind 300+ chapters earlier. Definitely makes going back more enjoyable.

  • @chidi329

It’s funny cause Oda over writes so much that even the cover stories have importance in the story.
Imagine if he included those cover stories as canon parts of the manga, the pacing complaints would be endless😂😂.
I like that Oda can never get enough of writing his own story it shows a deep love that I can’t even imagine.

The way i like to describe post time skip Sanji is that Oda forgets he's a real character until he remembers, and then Sanji's storyline explodes and he gets reaffirmed as one of the coolest One Piece characters ever
