    what...are you all talking about, if anything she's paying young men a compliment who decided to challenge the norm of what it is to be a man. Growing your hair long was a rebellious thing back then for men. Because all men were expected to be emotionless, stiff, wearing suits types. Not all men who wear suits and have short hair are jerks but she was giving guys a compliment. As if she is a man hater. give me a break.

    Anyone who completely dismisses Betty Friedan is missing the point of her message and the goal of feminism.Feminism doesn’t merely provide de facto and de jure rights,but instead feminism aims to create complete equality.Equality that transcends sexuality,race and gender and includes more than its physical manifestations but also those inner feelings that the person in front of you deserves any fewer rights or less respect than you do.Who would oppose an idea like that?

    The first recorded cultural movement of "long haired" young men was in Sparta. At the pass of Thermopylae, the Persians commented on the Greek hoplites combing their hair before the battle. Point being, long hair doesn't make you feminine, it just means you like a glorious mane.

    • @eiilzz
      @eiilzz 2 года назад +8

      Yes, however, as time changes and society develops the way long hair is viewed has most definitely changed. I am sure that in the 60s long hair was considered feminine if not uncivilized. The beauty standards then saw strong or attractive men as being well-groomed and put together, the way any white suburban father would be. I see what you mean though, it reminds me of how Native Americans were forced to cut their hair in an attempt to assimilate them through residential schools. The standard for long hair really depends on the cultural significance and period to which you are referring.

      @@eiilzz Exactly, parents would not let their daughter date a man with long hair. Some family will force the man to cut his hair. And the young man will politely obliged! Until, they stopped obliging...

  • @anon9110
    @anon9110 8 лет назад +5

    Men with long hair has nothing to do with feminism. The Beatles started the popularity of long hair, quite unintentionally in fact. Their hair wasnt long but by American standards, it was considered long. Then it caught on in America as a type of fashion. In fact The Beatles became less soft looking by the time of the White Album era. The long hair made them more edgy looking, not feminine actually. Its why many guys in metal have long hair today. Long hair dont mean girly. Thats a stereotype.

    • @qdawg861
      @qdawg861 7 лет назад +3

      Its not 'girly' because there is no such thing as 'girly'. Gender roles are constructed. Thats why they are so easily dismissed.....long hair on a woman....feminine.....long hair on a man.....'edgy' :)

  • @TTM9691
    @TTM9691 6 месяцев назад

    This is not 1964; March of '65 is when things really started heating up in Vietnam and her hair style and clothing looks much later. She's invoking the popular late 60s phrase, "Make Love Not War" which started being used in spring of 1965, though it took awhile to spread. And all of her lingo is late 60s, not 1964. I'd say this is at least 1965, if not later (much later). Love that this clip starts with her talking about, in essence, The Beatles' influence on fashion and social mores, that's cool.

    Friedan never seems to have regretted her denigrating view that women of the past wanted nothing more out of life than merely being mothers and wives. Her late-life moderation should have moved her to conclude that the “feminine mystique” itself was more than a myth. It is an education toward genuinely important human experiences. Her career, begun with a critique of the feminine mystique, was based at best on a partial truth. Her questioning should have led her to doubt her initial principles. The fact that she did not revisit her own thought is an indication of genuine commitment to radicalism. It explains why her radical principles were more influential and lasting than her moderation.

      @STORM LORD No she doesn't, and she'll experience things in her life that are very unpleasant that had this woman's parents stayed in Russia and Hungary instead of coming to the US, that she would NOT have had to experience.
      Interesting how THIS sort of Russian collusion is FINE. The FAKE Russian collusion has them seeing red, oh the irony that would probably be humorous were it not so sad...

    I married a man strong enough to cry and be sensitive. He was a Wuss. Incapable of making decisions. Everything was hard for him he couldn't keep a job because his bosses were mean to him. I'm a woman I want my man to be strong and not a big fat crybaby.

    Well if you're a man and you're not manly you have every right to be, however you can expect many setbacks. I would love it if men could be as femmy as they want and not get teased for it, however I'm more concerned about parental custody and false rape accusations that ruin lives. Also, I'd like it if more men stopped killing themselves all the damn time, because frankly it isn't healthy.

    I ike what she says... however the fact is there will always be bad things out there that we need to protect ourselves against. If everyone is sensitive with no muscles, what will we do when China or Iran attacks us someday... Not everyone out there is a kind, sensitive person... Its good to be nice and compassionate but not naive...
