I have been sitting on a suitcase for years, reverse the pedal and use your heel. It is ergonomically advantageous as well. your core is much better in-line..... The suitcase stays put unless you go away, saves dragging the seat around as well, plus a handy carry-all. Well, it suits me anyway...
Nice build! I definitely prefer wood over plastic; I include a rubber pad from a hardware store on to my first two where the beater strikes the case. That spring loaded hens is a great idea! I've seen other bills where some sort of legs or stabilizers mounted on the other side of the case and I may do that for my next one as well. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Cardboard boxes sound a bit better. -- Duct tape 3-4 layers where the kick pedal strikes the box and also use layers on the bottom to have a place to secure the kick pedal. -- Pillows or foam can be used inside the box (and suitcases, too) to adjust the sound.
Thanks, Merwin! Excellent, design and instructional video! I was able to duplicate your great work and make my own suitcase kick drum! It's sounds pretty good!
I have a really old suit case like this too.... and Im building a set. Except Those older suitcases are worth a lot of money... so Intead of the hinge, and I thought of the same idea... im building a cradle for the bottom, and strapping it in. Not drilling any holes holes. I can clamp the bass beater, to the cradle. These older suit cases are getting really hard to find. Collectors scooping them up. Mine is from the 40s... peace man.
Not a new idea ' We were using them back in the early 50's ' we would cut ports in the face of the suit case and attach a tambourine inside of it. Worked good for heavy metal music back in those days.
A lot of indie songs work well with this setup, Lumineers songs, most things that have a strong kick and snare pattern can be replaced with this setup. (tambourine as snare and suitcase as kick).
Great video! I personally love the sound of wooden tweed cases over the plastic shells. What are the dimensions of the tweed wooden case you used here? Thanks in advance!
On the large, tweed case, the bottom sounds better because that structure is of wider panels which vibrate at lower frequencies. Now, please pack that thing up and sell it to me, I've been looking for a case like that for a long time!!!

'' Well, it suits me anyway... '' intented or not, nice pun !
I wouldn't think you could sit comfortably on top of a suitcase for very long.
@@steveh4394 you can if you’re not overweight
That's what Shakey Graves does
Poor man's cajon drum.

What a clever idea, using the hinge! Such a perfectly simple and elegant design. Nice work, thanks for sharing!

This is true
Wish yiu could have added a picture of this. I was thinking the same with cardboard boxes.
Just what I needed - couldn't come up with a simple idea for attaching the pedal. Now I know exactly what to do. Thanks!
Clever! This guy is a mechanical genius. I wish he lived in my neighborhood.
Very cool, and excellent 4-way coordination technique on the Beatles tip!
I was skeptical until I heard the song at the end. This is a really cool idea.
Awesome thank you! What about the foot tambourine? What brand is that? Sounds great too
Thanks, Merwin! Excellent, design and instructional video! I was able to duplicate your great work and make my own suitcase kick drum! It's sounds pretty good!
So killer. Suitcase for the win. Thanks for sharing!!!

is that accompaniment of "Come together" by the Beatles that you play at the end? Super Cool... Explanation!
Simple and brilliant, love it!
Amazon links to kick and bells?
So dope. Nice work man. Thank you for this
Sounds 'boxy'. 😊
Looking for one like the far right metal reinforced tweed suitcase, tall and sturdy cause I plan to sit on mine and reverse the pedal to heel.
Dude this is actually brilliant
what is the size of the suitcase?
Great, easy instruction. I am building this tonight!
Solves the suitcase falling over problem. Thanks!
Very cool. Dave from Make Something channel and the podcast Making It. Recommended your channel and sent me here. Cool stuff!
Thanks for posting this.
great video!
Saw this on a Bochi the Rock chapter and had to see if it was really a thing. Cool
Nice thump on that suitcase!!
Hi! What's a brand of this suitcase?
Nice job! Sounds great... on youtube.. does it project at all in the outdoors?? Thanks again!
DustyCowdog it isn't as loud as a kick drum. Probably similar in my opinion to a cajon.
MerwinMusic thanks!! That’s good enough for me!
super cool!

Very slick video. I found a suitcase in a charity store and thought I might try this.

Ha. Well done on Come Together.
Awesome job! Very cool project
sick idea!
That was genious. Now all you have to do is glue a piezo disc and send it to the pa system İf you want to amplify it.
I have a second video where I add an output...I used an old speaker though since I didn't have any piezo's handy.
+MerwinMusic what are the measures of the suitcases you used?
21x18x8 inches
MerwinMusic thank you :)
1.17 most best sound.

Tks for the video! Now I got a lot of tips to built my own bass drum suitcase! ;)
I DIG THAT!
i bet if you drill out a 3" porthole you will get a deeper sound
Socks aren’t high enough, this foo ain’t down
Awesome, thanks
I built one of these to his specifications and have a really poor sound. Lots of ringing (muffled or unmuffled/duct-tape or no duct-tape). What gives?
It really depends on the suitcase that you start with. Also I don't really know what the duck tape is for...
Dope
🤔👍🇧🇷
one man band, Right???
The Best!

he play a beatles so a liked this video
He should glue a piece of hard wood to surface of the suitcase so it makes a better sound.
Where it hits the suitcase? How thick a piece do you think?
@@stclare58 Yes. Where it hits the suitcase. He should put at 1/8 inch thick piece of wood there to get a better sound.
Sit on it..
Бьютифул )))
Whats with the ankle socks- creepy!
Why would anyone do this and not just use a real bass drum?
Shut
Because people cant afford it
simple answer
Not impressed
