The Cajón is often the first choice when drummers call for a quieter sound. Whether playing a gig in an acoustically challenging environment, such as a church, unplugged shows, or simply stylistically speaking, there are situations where a drum kit is simply too thick. However, not only to limit yourself to a vile wooden box is not for everyone - fortunately you can build a small drums around the cajon with little effort.
Here are some inspirations on how to build your own Cajón-based setup. We'll introduce you to three approaches to configuring your custom Cajón setup, especially how it works without any special add-ons that are now widely available from multiple vendors, many of which have already been tested on bonedo.

Cajon are not a replacement for drums, you have to play them differently to make them sound good.
I'm gigging with the Cajon (I used to), but I still work on my drum skills and I started to play drums years befor I bought my first Cajon. Still, there are a lot of great drummers, that sound like shit on the Cajon.

We a small venue so having a full drum set is not ideal, I been using the Cajon and a tab Cajon. just picked up a cajon bass pedal too. These lighter setups have really been alot better for us in practice.

    I did it so:
    Buying a Thomann Percussion table
    Gibraltar SC-GCA-TP Cymbal Arm
    Millenium Cowbell Holder
    Meinl BassBoX plus pedal
    And hook tape
I put a Thomann TCA Flat Cajon in the left top corner
A Meinl WSS1BK Cajon Wood Side Snare below (straight side directed to the flat cajon)
right from this I have a
    Thomann TCA Cajon Jingles
below this a Meinl SLAP Cajon Slap Shaker large
below this left a Meinl WC1-S Cajon Castanet small (left) and a Thomann PB2 Power Block large red (right).
    The last column has
Both kinds of Meinl Cajon Finger Jingles, I attached them, that the jingles are muted and the strap is above.
    Schlagwerk SIZ10
Also I attached a Schlagwerk SIZ10 on the flat cajon in the left corner. This makes it possible to play snare rolls.
In addition to this, I attached 2 splash cymbals, the cowbell holder on the top edge of the table and a Millenium DT300 BK mountable tambourine
I play them with 2 different Rohema Poly Brush - the left hand gets a tightend one, I hit the instruments with the rubber ring, the right hand has a loose one.
    In addition I use:
Bongos with a Sonor BSTL Bongo Stand BK and damped with SkyGel Gel Damper Pads Crystal Blue (I put them on the back of the skin, so the bongos aren't too loud)
Schlagwerk SH10 Shake Hands (to double the notes I play on shaker & co)
Meinl FJS2S-BK Foot Tambourine (to emulate pedal hi hat)
and Meinl FS-BK Foot Shaker (so every bass drum beat has some shaker).
To get a softer sound on the "Bass box" I attached a loop tape on it, where the beater hits the box.
To transport the stuff, I use for the percussion table plus bass box, cymbals and tambourine the
    Stairville SB-145 Bag 465 x 410 x 275 mm
and for the bongos Millenium Classic Bongo Bag
The additional hardware is in an extra bag.
Now I need a bar stool only and can play very nice.
    The reasons are
    - A usual cajon kit needs much more time to prepare
    - A cajon bass pedal needs much more power to be kicked
    - Small cajon percussion attached on the cajon doesn't sound good, you hear a blend of this sound and the cajon housing.

This is actually more expensive than buying a regular kit. Some smaller pocket kits cost under $500. By the time you purchase cymbals, pedals, and stands and not to mention a good sounding cajon can run about $179, you've spent quite a bit. I guess you could buy a cheaper cajon but it's still costly when the accessories cost more than a kit.
