Main Street Railroad Crossing

- The Harbor Turn comes home to Tigard, Oregon at midnight on the dot. Here it crosses Main Street in empty downtown Tigard. The only progress it manages to impede is that of a Tri-Met bus.
An ex-ATSF unit is on the point and two former Saint Lawrence & Atlantic units trail. The bells you hear ringing as the gates go up are the bells of a nearby pedestrian crossing.
14 Years later, this video never gets old
I used to watch this when I was 4 and now I’m 12 and i still love this video brings back so much memories
same
Spent 10 years looking for this…
I finally found it!
This brings back a ton of memories from almost 15 years ago
This was my childhood railroad crossing video. Used to watch it all the time.
This is my son's favorite video. We watch it only about 100 times a day
My 3 y.o. son loves to watch this video, he loves trains and railroad crossings!
I love those bells - All 3 types AND love GS e-bells aswell - but NOTHING beats a Safetran type 1 e-bell
at night time i always find them spooky when they light up and go down
Yep. They were taken out mid-2008 or so. There used to be three tracks here, too but they consolidated it down to two.
@NS7698 - Here in Oregon, bells always ring from start up until the gates start rising. UP often does it so the bells ring whenever the lights are flashing. This line used to be an SP line and I guess the Portland & Western just continued their way of doing things.
We do wish Hall Blvd to be Grade Separated, Very Expensive, it’ll take a Long Time, Vehicles mostly don’t like to watch the Trains to Go by with Long Car Hauls, Which means to get rid of Railroad Crossings & Building a Bridge. It is a Busy Street that connects Beaverton to Tigard.
@Railfan24 The USDOT requires that the tip light (the light on the free end, or tip of the gate) must be a steady burning lamp, while the two inner lights flash in sync with the lights on the signal mast. Note that the gate lights on the far side of the tracks seem to operating properly. This was probably the result of faulty wiring or improper installation by the maintainers.
For those wondering about the incorrectly flashing light on the tip of the gate, it has been fixed as of 6.7.2009. Thanks P&W!
I have never seen a crossing where all 3 lights on the gate flash. Most of the time the light at the very top part (when not lowered) stays on. and the other 2 will flash.
I love those crossing bells and gates holders
@myrealghostbusters - It's probably the lack of ambient noise that makes them sound louder than they really are. Believe it or not, they can be set louder than that!
I have some sort of odd obsession over railroad crossings, for some reason.
Sir Crap-a-lot same here
Same
Sir Crap-a-lot Yep Me too...
Me to
Sir Crap-a-lot Haha You're not the only one. I have an obsession with them, too.
@Toucanfan - It is North American law that the locomotive engineer must sound his horn in a crossing sequence (long-long-short-long) before entering each crossing unless the crossing has a Quiet Zone which must be requested by the city or county and then approved by the railroad.
I like the main street railroad crossing because I never heard those kind of bells.
omg i watched this when I was 3 or 4 years old
I remember watching this
Oh yeah now I remember. Mikes Railroad Crossing Website has a page on it too. Only 8 daily trains run through here and P&W has a death wish on classic signals here also. I watched you're other videos and they are very good. Also, the E Bells are nice sounding here and not scratchy. All we have up where I live now are those stinky GS E Bells. Thanks for replying!
Great Video.🚂
Great video.
The two ex-SL&A units look very similar to the G&W units over in York, PA which are ex-MPA GP7s & CF-7s.
@deloreanman14 Actually some crossings are meant to be like that. Their harder to find but some have every light on the gate flash.
In Australia (at least in Adelaide), the bells ding the whole way, even when the gates go up.
A Western Cullen Hayes electronic bell, type two.
It has to do with changes in electrical current that travels from one rail to the other when the current is completed by the metal train wheels.
It judges how quickly the train is coming and if it stops short, will deactivate the signals.
@NS7698 Not always, on my fav crossing. CN had put up 4 quad gates for our now rail road quiet zone, and changed up the bells from safetran M bells to safetran E bells, and they stay ringing up till the gates go up
@deloreanman14 some (rarely) have this installment where the trains cant blow there own horns but they have a automated machine to do it for them ur also forgetting that they must blow there horns to warn Traffic but yah your right
those are the loudest bells i ever heard.
@NS7698 I'm Michigan the bells are constantly ringing until the Lights deactivates and the lights don't deactivates till the gate is fully up.
The top gate light (on the close signal) should not be flashing. It is supposed to remain on solid as a marker for the end of the gate. The technician wired the gate lights incorrectly.
Interesting that the tip lamp on the nearest gate is wired incorrectly. It's should be continuously illuminated. Most likely, the maintainer didn't correctly install the radial connector. (They can be installed in any of three positions. They are not "Murphy proof.)
@Aloud11 - They have since fixed the problem.
Does anyone notice the non flashing end light on the gate beyond?
@Flipzsd2 Thanks! :-)
beautiful horn! thank's for this video
@ekoslosky Well, there are bells, it's just that they were digitally recorded and they're being played back here.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has suggested that a 20 second warning time is adequate. Less time and motorists will not have time to react. More time will cause them to grow impatient and they will be more likely to drive around the gates.
Good video and nice level crossing
@Aloud11 THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! that has always bothered me and ever since the wes was put in 500 gates now have the blinking end light!!!!!!!! DAMMIT!!!
Didn't this crossing have a real old setup? I remember seeing triangle gates here.
Woah, the light on the tip of the gate is flashing...
ok so since the comment is pending aprroval the end lights are not supposed to be flashing and ever since the wes was put in EVERY gate it runs by does that. it has NOT been fixed.
how does the signal get activated, is it a pressure switch or a radio signal
someone wired that gate wrong. the light at the end of the gate is suposed to stay on and not flash. just like the one on the other side of the street..
This is my very first video to make it to 100,000 views! Thanks to all!!!
Why does the train sound the horn when there already are bells ringing? In Europe they don't.
sweet e-bell!
Great video
Are these Western Cullen Hayes Electronic Bells? I love these bells.
Yep they are
Halifax has these bells at the pedestrian crossing. I love the way they sound especially at Halifax because when there the train isn't passing through it, it sounds awesome in person, especially because there are 2 bells and they're close.
North main street in North Andover has these but I've only heard them from a distance.
Really? Beileve me, at Halifax they sound MUCH better in person. If u come I'll show u. I would really like it if u come, and if anyone else u know is into trains, bring them too. Jus so we're clear, I'm not trying to avoid u. I really want to railfan with u. It's just that when u move, especially overseas, u have a lot to do and it takes a lot of ur time. So just know that I'm not trying to avoid u. It's the move, that's taking a lot of my time.
Yeah I understand that. I can't make any promises that I can come to Halifax, but we can meet somewhere else.
Nice video. Is Harbor Tuen the name of that train?
50,000 views!!! Thanks for making this my most-watched video.
That’s my favourite bell
was this going to Salem going Southbound?
?
The bells are WCH Type 2 E Bells.
Wow...22,000 views in a little over a year! This video is poised to become my most viewed.
Many thanks to everybody who has checked this out. :-)
what state is downtown tigard in?
What was that train?
@The23113 - Tigard, Oregon....it's in the description.
main street richmond?
Give me mechanical bells any day of the week over those electronic bells, ugh... they sound horrible
@deloreanman14 no they didn't...
Yeah actually they do.....but those idiots usually get to the next crossing only to find the lights flashing and the gates already going down.....I remember a guy racing us from MP 58 to MP 53 to try and get ahead of us on the NS lurgan branch, but he got to MP 53 the same time we did.....Train=1 Idiot=0 LOL
YAY WC HAYES!

+Liam McNeely They must had wired it wrong since the other gate the 2 flashes and this game all 3 flashes.
