Pretty cool. My favourite shortline in Winnipeg, the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway, only has two working locomotives, which are both MLW RS23's. The BNSF shortline in Winnipeg only has one locomotive working in Winnipeg at a time, which is currently BNSF 1523, a GP28-2.

I think that cantilever was formerly a wig wag. Amherst has a few crossings with mini cantilever signals like that on Whitney st. and bridge st. they later just took the wig wags off while keeping the pole and just added regular flashers to the pole.
Nope! This is actually just how US&S did some of their small cantilevers back in the day. If you look at this crossing, you can see that it was designed to mount the lights like this: www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Ohatchee/Main/
Yep! It appears the Seaboard Coast Line or CSX was the one who replaced the Teardrop bell, and it was with a WCH mechanical bell. That mechanical bell was replaced sometime between 2009 and 2014 with the e-bell you see here.
When the signals were originally installed by the SAL, yes, it would've. At some point, it was replaced with a WCH mechanical bell that got replaced by this e-bell after 2009.
It is an odd one. I had thought that at one time as well, but it was just a signal that US&S offered. Where the lights are mounted (and how they are mounted) shows that it couldn't have been a wig-wag.
If it was just seen on one railroad that suggests to me it was a custom design they came up with themselves. I've never seen anything quite like it before. And the heavy use of threaded pipe (versus prefab/bent) also makes me think custom. If, maybe, a custom but standard design the railroad used at times.
George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting The ATN is a shortline, and they don't have the money to throw around on crossing upgrades like Class Is do. Most railroads also went with LEDs because the railroads realized that LEDs would last longer and save more money in the long run, despite higher initial costs. However, NS didn't adopt LEDs until 2014, and even that seems to be due to companies starting to drop support for incandescent equipment.
Wow... that is some horn action. I expected the train to come barreling through at about 30 MPH they way he was blowing it. And then no horn as he entered the crossing.
Come to think of it... I can remember some years back (10+ years now) before they built a bridge over the CSX rail line that passes thru in Novi, MI on Novi Rd. south of Interstate 96 that had a very similar small cantilever type crossing like this because of a hill on the south side of the crossing. I believe both ends had this similar type. Yes, no crossing gate there either.
Alabama, watch out carrying crude oil tankers, like West Virginia did in 2015. Their water contaminated, governor called the national guard for drinking water after 9 counties were declared disaster areas.

It does, doesn't it? However, with the way that the lights are mounted on the overhead, plus the fact that the SAL installed several examples of these on their lines across the country (a few of which survive to this day, including two on this line), it shows that these were made this way.
Yea, there's points on the pipes for the overhead where the lights are mounted to, most likely being where the wiring is run through. Also of note is that the mast lights on the "micro-cantilever" don't appear to be an original feature of the signal. (None of the WABCO lights here are really, as they would've all originally been US&S 8 inch lights, but it appears the SAL-spec US&S "micro-cantilevers" of this style never had mast lights, originally.)

Same
With the amount of times the horn was blowing, you’d expect it to fly through the crossing.
yep, wierd that he did not blow it trought the crossing
He blows the horn forever while approaching but then stops blowing 4 seconds before he gets on the crossing. Kind of odd.
There had been a bunch of kids trespassing on the line, plus another crossing, all to the east of here. Not sure why he didn't blow through the crossing.

No, they were replaced years ago.
How often do trains run through there?
Usually at least twice a week, often two times a day on the days that they do run through here (Tuesday and Thursday).
Nice Catch !

Love the EX-SP
Excellent catch with the ex "bloody nose" leading. That signal is very rare. Well done.

Wonder why there’s a GS-type 2/ Safetran type 2 ebll on a old signal crossing
Because the older bells were replaced. And if you read the description, you'd see it's a GS Type 2.
That train was making so much noise that I would not have trusted the warning lights!
With all that horn blowing and all that power, I thought a real train was coming.
Well, it is a real train. :P

freebrickproductions Your welcome.
Wasnt there a mechanical bell there before?
There was a WCH mechanical bell here before there was the GS e-bell, and before that would've been a US&S Teardrop.
Great Catching

When the signals were originally installed by the SAL, yes, it would've. At some point, it was replaced with a WCH mechanical bell that got replaced by this e-bell after 2009.
interesting crossing. I bet there used to be a wigwag there, in looking at how the mast was built.
It is an odd one. I had thought that at one time as well, but it was just a signal that US&S offered. Where the lights are mounted (and how they are mounted) shows that it couldn't have been a wig-wag.
Wow, I would have thought it was just a custom job.
Jovetj Same here, but since multiple examples of these exist on ex-SAL lines around the US, it had to be something US&S offered.

Could you please consider doing a crossing tour if you haven't already?
The ATN has upped the speed through here from 10 MPH to 25 MPH, and I plan on coming back to record this crossing again, so I will.
Great. And i thought that those lights are LED, not halogen.
George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting This crossing is fully incandescent. I'm actually not aware of too many LED crossings along the ATN.
***** Wonder why. I think they are turning halogen crossings to LED because they don't want to spend time and money repeatedly replacing broken bulbs.
George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting The ATN is a shortline, and they don't have the money to throw around on crossing upgrades like Class Is do. You caught two ex sp units and one in its original paint which is something you dont see often great video!

That's strange, why is the light on your side have a extra one and a top bracket?
Extra one? The overhead lights are for visibility, as there's a hill right behind the camera (which was actually on the side of the hill).

The horn kind of represented a conrail horn in my opinion.
Like at 0:53.
It's an RS3L, which Conrail loved to use, IIRC.
The Leslie horn... used by Conrail, PC, NYC, PRR
The USS teardrop bell probably died or something
I'm guessing. It appears that it was replaced with a WCH mechanical bell back in the 80s or so as well.
it kind of looks like like this crossing used to be a wig wag, you can see by the wig wag-looking cantilever, and i used to have a teardrop bell too.
It wasn't ever one.

Nice vintage signals there. I can see the bell has been replaced though.
Thanks! The bell was replaced years ago.

Thanks!
Nice film you caught
And who's watching this during 2024
When I first saw this I thought it was weird and now I realized this was an older model of signals that was popular in my state.
Yea, the SAL liked to use these signals, so a good few can still be found across their lines.
The cantilever looks like an old wig wag one

No.
E-bell, whyyyyy.
Thankfully, there was an RS3L coming around the corner to save the day.
The Teardrop bell that was here probably died.

This was never a wigwag.
