Thank you, Glen! I can't agree with your rankings because the bands you love here, I love 'em, too, they are all equal to me. Except for Tedeschi-Trucks Band, I just have not been able to get into them, just yet. Perhaps someday I will, but I will check out the Layla cover that you exhibited here on your recommendation. Rhino Entertainment does an excellent job with packaging box sets for the Grateful Dead, and the GD was very appreciative of their fans back when the band was an actual touring entity. I like your story about the King Crimson show where you bought the high-priced VIP package. Thanks again!
So much good stuff here, Glen! A lot of these are my favorites. The Seconds Out promo.. depending on the label, many promos had the timing strips or the promo stickers on the cover, but not necessarily anything on the record (no white label or anything). Still super cool and doesn’t mean it’s Frankenstein’d. Atlantic/Atco, London, and some other labels did a lot of promos that weren't necessarily denoted on the record itself. At any rate, timing strips are sexy and I’m jealous :)
Great vid Glen ! I just watched a video where Bob Weir wanted to play with Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke and Charlie asked Bob who is favorite musician was and Bob said other than Jerry Garcia it is George Jones. That's why they play some of George's songs. If you want to watch the video it's on Otis Gibbs channel. ✌️
Totally agree with you about Uriah Heep, Glen! I'm a huge Byron era fan and I absolutely love their first 4 albums! Nevertheless, I think their first album with John Lawton on vocals was a good one! These are some of my favourite bands of all time: Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band Soft Machine (Robert Wyatt era) Van der Graaf Generator The Heads Neu!
I _knew_ Uriah Heep would make this list and, in my morning fogginess, was trying to remember the albums of theirs that I'm familiar with. Then you show them first. I had Salisbury, Demons and Wizards, and The Magician's Birthday back in the stoned ages but haven't listened to them for decades. Love Tull through around 1980ish. Their well-known albums are of course great (Aqualung, Stand Up, etc.) but some lesser known albums I recommend are Heavy Horses and War Child. Discipline is Crimson's best but anything Belew had a hand in around that period was pure awesomeness; i.e., Remain In Light and work with Zappa. On the whole, music Jerry that made or contributed to tops my list: Grateful Dead, OAITW, JGB, Jerry & Merl, JGAB, LOM, New Riders, Reconstruction, Garcia & Grisman, Jerry with CSNY, Jerry with The Airplane, Hooteroll?, Zabriskie Point, etc., etc. Musician, spiratual adviser, articulate pontificator...The undisputed GOAT.
Okay, as of today, i would go with: 12. Dire Straits 11. Soundgarden 10. ZZ Top 9. The Police 8. Free 7. Pink Floyd 6. Fleetwood Mac (Green era) 5. The Band 4. Allman Brothers Band 3. James Gang (Walsh era) 2. Led Zepplin 1. Gov't Mule But except for #1 this changes constantly. I did not include bands that are more of a solo act (Springsteen, Hendrix, etc.).
@@mikel5582 Stella Blue on the Live at Bonnaroo album? The performance is beautiful in its simplicity, reminds you that huge sounding music doesn't need a lot, just a guy and a guitar. His version of U2s One is my favorite from that performance.
I agree that I also don't like talking about bands I dislike! (My Title of 'Most Hated' was clickbait.) From here on in, it's only stuff I like or love! I remember Tedeschi Trucks being really good, I need to listen to them some more.
What !!! No Beatles or Dylan. To obvious i"m guessing. All great bands on your list. A few that don't get enough love off the top of my head. 10cc, Gov't Mule, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
I intentionally left off solo artists and artists whose name is fronting the band..Springsteen, Petty, etc..Yeah..no Beatles..I am kinda bored with them right now..I am sure the love will return at some point..
Hi Glen!!! so cool to see the band that you love and also the kind of "new" like the police, Yes or Genesis.... are you going to do a part III with the solo artists?? cheers and be well
Thank goodness that ridiculously over-rated band from Liverpool didn't make the list. A foursome of of wannabes. The fever has finally broken and you've come to your senses. 😝🤪😜
Nah, it's not. You've always said The Beatles are your favorite band. I love most of your choices (not Led Zeppelin, obviously), but The Tedeschi Trucks Band? I've tried, but really? Their cover of 'Layla' is fine when it is an exact copy of the original, but the solos ...? It's like watching a Tesla smoke any standard sports car on a test track. Just gone ... out of sight, and Derek Truck's solos on 'Layla' get smoked just like that. Frankly, why did he even show up? Duane Allman's version actually sounds reedy when it is separated from the backup arrangements, but it kills Derek Trucks' version stone dead in a one-punch knockout. Derek Trucks may as well have been scrambling eggs. But, yeah, Procol Harum, Genesis, The Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull - who's arguing?
I have gone on the record that The Beatles are no longer my favourite band and I am sticking to it..lol..To each his own..I am a big TTB fan..I think the solos on the live album are awesome..
Yeah, I just don't get most covers. Either they are identical to the original - in which case, why bother? Publicity and money, I suppose; or they veer off the original in places and just sound worse. Very few artists actually re-imagine an original, one of the few exceptions being KD Laing, whose covers are superb. Her version of The Hollies' 'Air that I breathe' is, ironically, breathtaking, replacing the iconic guitar solo with a truly elegant anti-solo. Johnny Cash re-imagined originals beautifully too. His version of The Ten Inch Nails' 'Hurt' is so much more powerful than the original, as is his 'Folsom Prison Blues' reworking of 'Crescent City Blues.' The ultimate covers band, as we all know, was Led Zeppelin, who had an industrial scale template for writing covers. And I'll give them that much, they really were the greatest covers band of all time, up there with KD Laing. As for The Tedeschi Trucks Band, I'm going to - as another commenter suggested - give them more time. As you like them, and you have impeccable taste, they must be a lot better than I have discovered them to be so far. Time for a deep dive. But the cover I heard of theirs of 'Layla' was unfortunate. 'Layla' has two seminal solos - the guitar and piano solos - and then there is whatever Derek Trucks did with it. They weren't really solos, and they weren't fills - they were kind of kicking a ball around in a random, bored fashion. Maybe you will turn me around. We'll see. (Not that anyone other than me cares.)

Some shockers missing and no sign of Hackneyed Diamonds! I agree that Magnification is an underrated Yes album!
