I was at my local record store the other day and there was a younger girl looking at records and her mother said, “You don’t even have a record player!” She said she just wanted it for decoration because it was cool. It really happens! 😊

I've just starting getting into vinyl in the last year but I find recently I'm purchasing more and more cd's.
CDs still have many more advantages.
Don't tell the vinyl junkies that! CDs are BAD (in their opinion).
@@danpetitpas Never stopped buying CD's, but at lot less the last decade when fewer albums came out on CD (vinyl only). The last two years I got more into CD buying again, mostly used, but also new when available. The reason being that I enjoy the CD format for what it is, just like vinyl. Bought a non oversampling DAC (NOS) last year. After nearly 4 decades of listening to CD's, I was never aware of the sublime sound quality a CD contains (with good recordings of course). Now I buy something like 60/40 CD/LP. A used CD with the same high quality as vinyl, cost half the price of a new record (and sometimes used too) inc. postage from abroad. Dont worry, I tell anyone how good CD's actually are. Wont want them prices to go up 😁
There is a margin of vinyl that will always be outrageous such as Dark Side of the Moon, The Stones’ mono UK pressings, Led Zeppelin’s UK pressings.
These are exceptional albums from a time when vinyl sound was an art form and advancing.
These are essentially investments.
Priceless art.
The pricing bubble will only burst when people stop paying the high prices.

The price of a vinyl record ISN'T high, unless your convinced that everything should be priced as it was 50 years ago.
A lot of people pay expensive prices and some people refrain from paying. There will never be a time when some people won't pay. That's life.

@@kenweide6083 He's right, most albums are on rate when compared to 30+ years ago. There are outliers, yes, but most albums are fairly priced. The problem is you have a ton of people making $15 an hour or less, and not getting raises.
There's a point that changed that people never realized. When the first vinyl master was cut it was from an analogue master tape. In the 80's, some of them were cut from a digital master file as well as today's records. Today''s ones are from very high resolution DSD and some of those file are from the Analogue tapes. If you wonder if I know an alblum that was from the 80's my answer is yes. Madona's Like a Virgin was a digital one. For Mobile Fidelity process I have no problem with that. There is an advantage to that. When the transfer of the Analogue Master tapes are transfered into the Digital format, the recording quality is preserved and will remain the same no matter how many times it will be played back to cut a laquer master. However it has to be on high resolution like they did for the Mobile Fidelity release of Michael Jackson's Thriller. They transferd everything on DSD 256 and they adjusted the azimuth of the tape player head for every songs. This means that that specific album audio integrity is preserved for as long as they can preserve those files. With today's technology, all analog Masters should be carefully digitized and that will be the only way to be able to use those master without risking any damages everytime they are played back and have those master tapes stored in a fire proff controled environment to be preserved.
Here in Australia i had a great run from 2008 to 2015 of going to record fairs and getting good stuff at relatively reasonable prices. Those days are gone.
I used to get tons of cheap during those years... it was a lot of fun.
Same thing in France, every tom dick and harry tries to profit from the vinyl resurgence. Difficult times.

I switched to buying CDs about a year or two ago for this exact reason. I'm back to happily collecting albums for a few bucks a pop, and they sound great.
Visited a local HMV a few days back, on the off chance. They seemed to have cleared almost all of their "2 for £40 and 3 for £55" vinyl and were just trying to sell albums (single or double) for £30+.
I went home with nothing.
I always wait for sales in the big stores in France (FNAC etc) Sometime you can happen on good reduced prices 50-70%
I only buy vinyl that I’d call essentials in whatever genre I’m into. Other than that I’ll just get the CD.
Yeah. Ultravox' final album runs around $200 on clear vinyl. I love them but I'm not sure I love them that much. The CD is $12
I've cut back on buying vinyls and went back to buying more CDs. The KISS self titled is probably one of my favorites as well.

Yes. My CD collection is growing again as I try to complete band collections, which is far cheaper than trying the same on vinyl 😀

I think the reason a lot of older records sound better is because of the "loudness wars " and the reduced dynamic range it entails, rather than digital vs analog.

I have noticed in the last 10 yrs Record store day lineups have been getting longer and definitely younger collectors. I also noticed used records at my local store are now $25 here in Ottawa.

The train has basically left the station for all analogue LP transfers of old albums. The old tapes are degrading with time, and every time they are played to make new issues, they degrade even more. The best one can hope for are good DSD transfers. Then put away and lock up the original tapes forever. In many cases it is a question of preserving history over analog purists' perceived needs.
I've talked about opening up a record shop for the last few years, I'm just slightly scared the bubble won't last. Big commitment
In the Boston area we still have one chain of stores that sells records, but it augments those sales with merch, collectibles, comic books, clothing and music-related books. They have survived since 1978 (starting as a comic book shop that sold local records) by changing with the times and the demands of their clientele.
I love the fact that youngsters are buying vinyl now. It gives them an opportuity to sit down and listen to the whole album rather than an artists most popular hits on something like spotify. An album is crafted and the tracks (fast and slow) guide you across the album.I liked your top 4 albums of all time and must say, I could do my top2-3, but after that, it depends what mood I am in and the time of day haha.The cost of vinyl will always come down to what you can afford - in my younger days, it was records first and then a night out if I had anything left over !!
I am glad I got most of my vinyl decades ago for a lot cheaper than now. I noticed prices going up to £35 for a 2XLP a couple of years ago. Now, it seems to be £40 and even £50 for Queen's last 2 albums on 2XLP.
I have noticed massive $10 💵 clearance sales of vinyl at many stores lately as deep catalog items aren't selling & poorly compiled " Best Of " albums aren't fooling the consumer. I think prices have peaked & there will begin to be more care & diligence put into reissue titles. Fingers crossed 🤞.
I’m an old guy (71) and I bought mind games on a budget label for about £1:25 in about 1980 . The new vinyl for 2024 is £49:99 . I know my first purchase was light years ago but getting the double at that price is too much . If you want all the music on McCartneys one hand clapping I think you have to buy the vinyl as the cd version doesn’t have the backyard songs - a good marketing trick! I have definitely slowed up on buying vinyl.
69-years old here. Stopped by the HMV shop on Belfast last month. Nowadays, I only buy CDs (1985 to present) and they were a hell of a steal; paid around ₤4.00 to ₤7.00 for them (Marvin Gaye, Johnny Cash, etc). Heading towards to the exit, so had a quick look for the vinyl. I saw many of them were higher than ₤40.00 and some hit ₤60.00.
Nowadays I try to focus my record buying on OG albums or reissues from the original analog tapes. ( expensive stuff I know ) The band that has the most real estate in my collection easily is Marillion. I have many picture discs/ EP`s/ original pressings/ reissues/ interview discs and bootleg vinyl. This collection starts from `82 through to the present. It`s funny that whenever I find a Marillion record in the used bins, I buy it. I want that vinyl to come to a home with its family. I hope that doesn`t sound too crazy.

I just purchased a new intergrated amp and CD player from ROTEL which was an upgrade from a old DVD player i was using and a very basic receiver.
I started buying records again in 2009. Apart from the ever increasing price of new records, I have seen used records that I bought then for $1-$3 go to 7, 15 and now $20. My local store had a $5 or 3 for $10 section for a long time, that is now almost gone and only has what used to be bottom shelf one dollar thrift store stock. These days I buy far fewer records, though partly it is because I feel I have most of what I want at this point, and there isn't much new I feel I nee to buy vs. streaming
I have cut way back, however, killer Dead releases I will always grab! Dick’s Picks Vol 12 for instance is absolutely stunning! Glad I bought most of my vinyl 2019-2023.
I remember watching alot of Vinyl Community Members back in middle and high school when I got into Vinyl Collecting. Some have come and gone, But dude i'm glad you still make videos, I'm thinking of sharing my Black Sabbath Vinyl Collection sometime, Since It's the artist I own the most albums of. I purchased two LPs (Pete Townsend and Pat Benetar) from Amazon U.S., one in April and one in May 2024.
Both are very good condition and each were delivered for under $20.00 U.S.
Most of my personal friends and me that collect vinyl are buying less, personally I think what we are choosing are THE álbum or THE single choosen carefully among the bunch we want. Some also are more in the cd 💿 mood again.

100 percent. I've don't buy as much as I used to. I've been priced out. And the Used record store prices are outrageous. if they want normies to embrace vinyl. You can't charge $30 for a random new album.

Hi there from France, I think that the bubble won't bust for some time, but the older generation 50+ do stop buying re-issues for 35-40 euros and prefer second-hand. In France there are lot's of flea markets in the towns and villages during the warm month's and holidays, so you can happen upon used Lp's for moderate prices (5-15€), a little less now than a few years ago, since everyone has understood that vinyl is still in demand. In consequence I have switched to buying CD's, A CD for 1 or 2 € is the rule... And you can find first edition CD's which were issued before the loudness war (82-90(?)) and not re-mastered. If I want to have the best possible "Analogue" experience I download some Hi-Res files and record on Reel-To reel tape. Like someone else mentioned here with a hi-quality transfer from the master tape you have a lossless copy, and a Reel-to reel recording of that is exactly the same as a production master which was used to cut vinyl. That is nearer to the original intended sound than the vinyl itself. Oh and if I think that the dynamic range has been reduced I can use an analogue DBX 3BX dynamic range expander to regain some. I never got rid of either my old vinyl or CD's and both collections are now approaching the 5000 count.
Great video Frank! I tend to prefer all analog records as the sound has more depth to me, although some can be a bit light on the bass or maybe that’s just UK pressings from that era. I still buy new records and some do sound really good indeed - Depeche Mode albums for example. Oh there’s always an upgrade path. I’m currently debating whether to change my current ATVM95ML cartridge but still can’t decide lol.

Hey man, I like the video. I agree with your take on the whole digital vs analog debate. I have never cared too much but when I have the chance I like to compare the sound of remasters of older music. Usually the older master has a nicer sound and more presence. Digitally remastered music has more of an energy where it tries to force itself on me. An exception to this would be the Beatles' let it be. There the 2009 remaster gives more room for the guitar solos which are epic to my ears.
On another note, the cost of vinyl records has indeed gotten out of hand. When I started collecting a little over ten years ago I bought most records for below five euros. Most of them go for over twenty euros in the seconds hand market these days. This feels nice when seeing the value of my collection on Discogs but i'd never sell them. I am also in enough records stores and fares to know that expensive records will always be on discount somewhere someday so when something feels too expensive I'll just let it be. The cost increase has come mainly due to the growing amount of people collecting vinyl and I enjoy the fact that there are so many people to share my hobby with more than that the cost of new records can bother me so I guess i'm lucky.
I still buy LPs, although not as many because of costs (everything, not just LPs are going up, people seem to be targeting only vinyl)! I stream hi res music from" Quobuz" as an alternative sometimes! But I'm not going to stop buying LPs ever, there are good prices and sales (depending on title and artist)! If a record is cut from a hi res source , it's almost indistinguishable from tapes!
I don't buy as many vinyl records as I did 3-4 years ago but I'll treat myself to one or two once in a while. Not only because they are just too expensive but rather because after a while there's just not much left on the want list. With this being said, I just ordered the YES 90125 45rpm reissue part of the new Atlantic Records 75 for 75 release from Acoustic Sounds. All the reviews are good and apparently it just sounds superb (yes, I know... I'm a sucker...). It comes to just a little over CAD$120 just for one album with shipping and conversion to CAD dollars, which is pretty expensive. But this album is very high on my all-time favorites albums list. Plus, I needed to replace my original copy that I bought new in 1983. I must've listened to this copy at least 10 000 times! Cheers from Montreal! 🇨🇦
0:10 There are record deals out there, but everything depends on what one collects. My musical tastes are pretty broad and I've purchased many records from Amazon over the past few years that were under $20, many for less than $15 (like a horror movie soundtrack I bought just two days ago for $13.87 before taxes that spiked back up to $44.99 today), and even some that were under $10. Many were new artists versus very established artists, but it all depends.
My audio system is jerry-built from a $139 receiver to a $89 Fisher speakers to a $99 turntable to 2 $30 DVD players to play CDs and dvds 📀 on connected by speaker 🔈 wires and rca cables.
Couldnt pick 1 song forever. Radio ruined the 1st Boston album for me, by playing it over and over. Now that i dont listen to radio, ive warmed up to it again

I agree most vinyl is too expensive! I usually won't pay more than 22.00 usd for a record. I usually go to Walmart or Best Buy and look for albums marked 19.00!

The rising costs are a big reason I still predominantly buy CDs. Even for things that were never issued on CD or are out of print, I still pause at putting down $30+.
I'm with you Frank. The record companies are pricing me out sometimes. For Example, I wanted to buy the latest Blink-182 album. Vinyl was almost $35USD so I bought the CD for $11USD. I can't justify paying 3x more for vinyl even though I would rather have it on vinyl.

I don't like answering top 5 questions, but Kiss debut would be one of them for sure, I think what made the early Kiss songs better was Gene & Paul's love for the Beatles, I think they should have written more songs together, like Lennon & McCartney & Jagger & Richards , anyway I used to have quite a large Kiss collection, but sold most of it, still have a lot of albums & 45's .. I went to most of the NY Kiss cons in the 90's, sold as a dealer there & other Kiss cons .. I have a old video of my early 90's "Kiss" room on my channel .. thanks for another cool video
I just got a copy of Meatloaf Bat Out of Hell II for around $35 on 180gm vinyl (2 disc set) I am listening to it as I type this comment. Last time I saw this was on a 1st pressing from the mid 90's at over $140. I am happy to buy it on a re-press. I also have the German Mastered CD/DVD of the album so I have no end of choices listening to it (The Music Videos are on the DVD)

The selection of records at my local record store and at the thrift stores has dropped such that there was very little vintage stuff of any quality. There were new releases for Record Day, but they disappeared quickly. Equipment is getting a bit scares as well. It seems we passed peak record already.
Thank God for the fresh blood! Also, if prices make us more "choosey", that's probably not bad either. I've definitely finished getting my "back catalog" caught up, and now am much more picky looking for originals, and my buying has slowed. (late/young Gen X-er here) Keep up the great videos!
It's probably not worth debating whether analog sounds better than digital. I remember my 1st digital rock album being Hawkwind's *Levitation.* It did and does sound terrific, recorded on the 3M digital tape system in 1980. Three years later I heard Mike Oldfield's *Crises,* featuring the great Simon Phillips (later with The Who) on drums. That was recorded on an Ampex analog reel-to-reel and it's also an exceptional record on LP or CD.
I always thought The Beatles started metal with "Helter Skelter", but I never really paid much attention to that theory. Regarding digital vs analogue. Back in 1967 when Sgt. Pepper's was released it was lauded as the perfect psychedelic record, the sounds were amazing, right? And they were. However, and this is just me, when that album became available on cd I heard sounds I had never heard before, I mean I was astounded, so I don't know. I always enjoy your channel, thanks.
I actually used to own a Clearaudio turntable with a very expensive cart. I wasn't very happy with it and I actually prefer a Tech 12 with Nagaoka cart.
Two weeks ago Walmart in the U.S. lower prices on their records selections to $10 and $15 . They were still on the shelves.
That's because those are Walmart editions and they are not necessarily the best sound quality, so genuine collectors don't particularly want them or they are selling albums the general public doesn't want anyway or they've already made their purchases in the past.
Still, $10 to $15 are great deals.

Sadly, many of the old studios are gone now. I think there's just a historical marker where Trident used to be.

Once you adjust for inflation, prices are back to where they were in the 80s. -- Holy grail: I know it when I see it. Don't have a list. -- Re dream system, I first need to be convinced that it is worth spending more. Plan on going to a high end dealer in August to demo better TTs and PSs. We'll see ...

I only purchase vintage vinyl and CDs. I noticed a substantial increase in prices since lockdown. The amount of resellers increased dramatically . All the shops i used to buy from at fair prices pre lockdown are gone except for one. For the last year I've only purchased from thrift stores. Occasionally they have some good vinyl behind the counter priced fairly sold in a group. Every once in a while they miss something and it ends up in the regular display. Best finds to date are a near mint vinyl copy of The Smiths Strangeways here we come for $3 Cdn , Metallica bootleg cd and Def Leppard Rock it cd put out by Molson Canadian $2 Cdn.
The thrill is in the hunt. Never stop digging.

I'm a Classical Music fan and over the years I have found that Classical Music sounds better on Vinyl than CD I have found that I have to turn it up more on CD than L.P.

...I find that hard to believe mate . Yes, some vinyl classics can sound great especially if mastered right on good quality vinyl , but when the cd is played , there is silence , dynamics, and overall , a vast improvement....and I'm a classic lover . ( And I always have to turn my amp up when playing vinyl )
A lot of companies are still tooling up for vinyl. Once these come online there will be competition for pressing and LP Jackets.I will no longer be buying remixed or remastered vinyl due to some great upgrades in my system.Most of albums.. Motorhead and Hawkwind.

The bubble may not burst. But things will come to a steady place. Once that happens. Many will start walking past it just like they did when the CD is the main player around. I have already started seeing many reissues ov vinyl making their way to the clearence bins at Walmart, on the shelves of clost out stores like Big Lots, and many people are donating their collections to Goodwill and other thrift stores.
as long as the mugs keep buying the record companies will keep on selling them and of course conveniently finding lost tracks, demos, remixes to help sell the same tired old records time and time again..

Regarding comments on album cover locations who wouldn't want to visit Abbey Road? I actually did many years ago exact location and videoed my self walking across the street like the boys in St. John's Wood (London) Apple Studios. Way cool.
True enough... I would add that to my list. Reflecting further on the question, if I was in NYC, I'd also check out the location of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti.
0:10 As long as demand exceeds supply or if music companies deliberately create an artificial shortage (like very limited edition Record Store Day exclusives), prices will always be steep.
Prices only go down when supply exceeds demand (not likely to happen) or prices stabilize when there is equilibrium; i.e. when supply matches demand, and that's not likely to happen either.
However, there are deals out there depending on what one collects, but let's face it; some treasured albums out there or holy grail albums are not likely to ever reach bargain basement prices. Sometimes, one has to bite the bullet and shell out the dollars for a prized album if it's likely the price will only become even more absurd in the future.
The price of records is getting crazy, I saw the re issue of Skid Rows self titled album selling for $60 aud here in Oz. I've been buying and getting into older music that I get from Charity shops for $1.

Very wise about the "one song" question. I find I have no interest in hearing Beatles albums anymore, just because I've listened to them so much. With music "More" makes everything better.

Welp, bought the Franz Ferdinand debut on vinyl and it was 50 bucks CAD. So I guess it depends on how badly you want it. I find that if I walk out of a record store with a new record and it's under $40 I'm doing okay

The new Black Sabbath box set for the Tony Martin Era Anno Domini is is only 99 U.S. for a 4 LP set which is nice. Can't really complain.

In my top 5 albums would be Bat Out of Hell 2, which contains that "one song for the rest of your life". While I agree with Frank, just one song can put you off music, I Would Do Anything For Love has such a story that it retains interest on every listen (most people think what he'd do for love isn't in the song). The truth is that the song is so long, by the time he gets to the answer mentioned in the lyrics, they've fogotten the question. It also has the advantage that you can only play it in full 4 times an hour and a fraction of the 5th - it's 12 minutes long!

I don't think the new vinyl bubble will burst, although it may stop expanding so quickly and maybe even deflate a little. Old music vinyl is subject to a rolling value horizon that slashes the price of music no one remembers anymore. It's already happened to Sinatra records, and is happening to Elvis. Stones, fabs, Floyd and Zep are probably immune. Bowie and MJ only maybe.

My most artist is Yello. I have 120 pieces of vinyl as I have 12" 45 singles, some 7" singles as well as their albums.
I love Yellow up to 1991.After that they became more commercial. You may like the Avant Garde Group The Residents. They signed Yellow and the first two Yellow albums were on The Residents label Ralph Records in the early 80s.
I saw two concerts last week. At the 1st, bands sold LPs for $25US. I bought one from two bands that night. The next show the band had $30 records. I bought NONE. So there you have it.
I was interested in the Linkin Park compilation albums but $45 is nuts!

Personally i don't see the point in buying a record if its just going to sit on the shelf, i think its why most companies get away with bad sounding records as very few are playing them, if they are its commonly on cheap players that you don't hear the difference on anyway.
I've been saying "No To Vinyl" over the past year. The only album I might buy in the future is a Beatles 'Rubber Soul' box set. Other than that, I'm keeping my money.
As a Millennial I really have slowed down on buying Vinyl records. The prices are way too much for me. I been buying CDs way more. I have notice the price of CDs went up. But still way cheaper than a record. So I'll keep buying CDs.
I've pretty much stopped buying within the past year because the prices have gotten stupid. I do have my list and I still go to record stores and look but, I don't buy new records because of the $40-$50 price tags.
