Recently picked up Self Portrait as I've been filling out my Dylan vinyl collection and after reading about it and avoiding it for years it's become one of my favorite Dylan albums. I was hooked from All The Tired Horses to the end of the 2nd disc

If “The Beatles” is not your favorite band you are in trouble because everyone, musically speaking, came after them and no one would be the same without them. Therefore, excluding “The Beatles” from contemporary music history and naming another band or individual act as a “favorite” is inappropriate and weird. Simple math: "The Beatles" contains current pop music, and everything else is contained in "The Beatles."

King Crimson sings Frank Sinatra. I guess I would pick The Grateful Dead of these three, but I don't think these would make my top ten.

I think, for the moment, it is Yes. But, obviously, it is actually The Beatles. Just send me your Beatles collection. I will hold it for you, and I will return it to you when you realize you really want it back. But not immediately. I will delay responding for a while. I may smash some of the albums into fragments and return them separately. The greatest albums, I'll probably not return at all, whatever I have promised. I'll just tell you how much I am enjoying them. And then you'll return to your senses. The Grateful Dead, Yes and King Crimson are all towering bands, but they aren't remotely The Beatles. You know that: I know that. You just have to become Beatles-deprived for a while, and then the pain will start. So long, sucker!

Grateful Dead baby! My sentimental pick would be YES however.

The Beatles are and will always be my favorite. I know every record, every note, inside and out. I don't need to play the music to hear it. They are part of my DNA. I don't know any other artist as thoroughly, so I play others more.

King Crimson, without a doubt. Never made a bad album. Always interesting, never boring .music for the mind and heart, more than Yes, in my opinion

C'mon Glen You forget about Zappa? Zappa's your second favorite, after Grateful Dead/Jerry. Anything else you need me to tell you about yourself? 😉 I think a lot of people who say they don't like the Dead, or Zappa for that matter, have only scratched the surface on the breadth of their catalogs. Both excelled live. Zappa incorporated a lot of live recordings into official releases alongside studio work. The Dead did that too but typically left whole performances as is. Both artists aren't for casual listeners looking for hit songs. p.s. I rarely play Beatles albums but I still think they're the best ever. They were _that_ good.

I say for me, with the choices you presented, it would have to be King Crimson, with YES being a close second. Sorry, not too much of a Grateful Dead fan. I do love 'Touch Of Gray' of course.

Easy one. It's The Dead.

Robert Fripp is one of the most consistent and versatile musicians. Even during the corrosive '80s (we all know what kind of music Yes, Genesis and Chicago were writing from that decade onwards) he gave us just as great music as the '70s! And Yes certainly never wrote groundbreaking music like "Red" or (No Pussyfooting). I love the Dead (Garcia, Weir and Hart have also released great solo works) but I love Crimson more!

Out of these, I'd go with the Dead. But maybe, your favorite band is one, that you haven't discovered yet. That's what I always think, it's what drives the search, and the search is fun.

I'm not playing this game. It sucks! But it is the logical extension of your alphabet game with Rich Strickley. After you have gone A-Z on songs, you are going to have to choose your favorite letter. The reason I'm not playing this game is because a band's best songwriter probably doesn't share the same letter as the band itself. The Eagles to Don Henley; Dire Straits to Mark Knopfler; Mott the Hoople to Ian Hunter etc. So, you are going to have to build in some modifications. The letter includes anyone in the band with that letter (so, Dire Straits includes Don Henley). Plus the letter can describe the first, middle or last name - so, Don Henley is a D or H. The letter can also describe the shortened band name (see below). So, now for your Ds: Miles Davies Bob Dylan Jacob Dylan Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler) The Dead and Dead & Co. (Jerry Garcia) (Robert Hunter) The Dead Kennedys, I suppose Dido The Doors Don McLean Dr. Hook Dreamscape Three Dog Night Dan Fogelberg Freddy and the Dreamers Ray Davies / Dave Davies / The Kinks Dave Cousins / The Strawbs Dickey Betts / The Allman Brothers Dexys Midnight Runners The Dave Clarke Five Deep Purple David Gilmour / Pink Floyd It's getting better, isn't it? Jerry Garcia, Peter Gabrial (Van Der)Graf Generator, GTR etc. H:- Hawkwind, Steve Hacket, Horslips, Steve Hillage, Humble Pie etc P:- Pink Floyd, Pretty Things, Pendragon, ,Procol Harum, Prince, etc & finally W:- Wishbone Ash, Johnny Winter, Warhorse, Rick Wakeman, The Who. Giving up a lot here but this is what I can''t live without!

i think, I will go with S for Springsteen, Billy Strings, SUSU (love those girls), Saving Escape (gotta have some really young artists for future admiration), Santana, Supertramp, Sting, Scruffy Bear (cool new band from the UK), Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots (at least some kind of Stones). "B". I have to have The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Two of the first artists I got into. And if going by last name for a solo artist, I get David Bowie. Plus, The Byrds, James Brown, Jackson Browne, Boston, Blondie, The Band, Buffalo Springfield, Chuck Berry, Beyonce, Bad Company, Badfinger, The Bangles, The Beaches, Black Sabbath, Blue Rodeo and Bon Jovi. Not bad for one letter!
