  • In today's Vietnam travel vlog, we set out to try the best food in Hoi An. This city offers a delicious mix of Vietnamese and Chinese flavors, from street food to fine dining. As many local specialties rely on unique ingredients found only in this area, Hoi An is an exciting and magical place to visit, with fascinating food options to explore. We recommend trying the following:
🫖 Iced herbal tea from Mót Hội An (the best herbal tea we've ever had!)
🥟 Bánh Bao Bánh Vạc (white rose dumplings)
🍜 Cao Lầu (pork rice noodles)
    🍳 Bánh Xèo (Vietnamese pancakes)
🥖 Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng (Vietnamese baguette sandwich)
🐓 Cơm Gà Hội An (Hoi An chicken rice)

The food in Hoi An is amazing! I mean..it's pretty amazing everywhere in Vietnam, to be fair. 😅
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DIDN'T LOVE CAU LAU. Hahaha. It's one of our favorite food memories of Vietnam. Those noodles were delicious. I am just going to assume you guys had a bad batch. 😂
Vietnamese summer rolls are something we make at home on a regular basis. So refreshing and light on hot summer days. 🤤

We didn’t not like it, but yea, perhaps we just had a bad execution. It was tasty but a lot to eat lol. We have just had so many dishes that we like better!
And yea, spring rolls, summer rolls… give us all the rolls! 🙌

Definitely want to see you guys eat and react to Broken Rice (with Grilled Pork Chop). It's the signature dish of Saigon. If your visa has already expired, feel free to travel other countries, but definitely come back to the next adventure and try out "new dishes" 😋. I'm so looking forward to seeing more and more Westerners fall in love with Vietnam one by one. It's a dangerous country. Just like someone said, you might forget your way home if you wander too much. Many Americans love Vietnam so much that they made Vietnam their second home or they would settle a base in Vietnam to make it convenient for Asia traveling😉
12:45 and 12:59, those two panels were amazing and beautiful. It's like I'm getting a "second hand reaction" through you guys.

It was Ba Le well restaurant in your video @scratchtotable. A friend of mine who was born and raised in Hoi An told me back in mid 90s that cau lau (the noodle) has to be made with water from Ba Le well (a well, not the restaurant that is named after the well) and some kind of ash from an island off the shore of Hoi An. Not sure every cau lau in Hoi An is made under the same process.

    • @mikeandashley
      @mikeandashley  11 месяцев назад +1

Apparently, all the cau lau noodles are all still made by the same family, but they don’t use the same well any longer. We visited the well during our time there. It was pretty interesting to learn of the history, we just didn’t have our cameras and didn’t eat at the restaurant. Apparently we messed up! 😅

    • @mikeandashley

We can’t find their exact location on Google, but you can find the small stall tucked away on the outside of the Central Market. If you’re facing the Central Market from the river, follow the right-hand side and look for the sign with Anthony Bourdain (It is easy to miss).
We’ve also heard Banh Mi Queen is equally delicious, but we didn’t get the chance to try it this time.

    Hello again,
I caught your video just in time! Wow! You two tried out different variety of foods. That’s great. Especially bánh xèo, it’d really enhance the taste of it if it’s wrapped with mustard leaf and herbs. The strong flavor and dryness of the mustard leaf would balance out the fatty taste in bánh xèo. Watching you two eating that made me hungry!
Correct me if I’m wrong but I have a feeling that the video was out of focus because it’s kind of blurry. Don’t know if you two tried bún bò Huế and bánh bèo in Hội A because tthey we created in that region. Bún bò Huế can be very spicy, per your appetite.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Really enjoy it. Stay safe and healthy.

    • @mikeandashley
      @mikeandashley  11 месяцев назад

Hey hey! 👋☺️ Yea, we found out later that we should have had greens. She only gave us bean sprouts… that Ms. Van!
We’re excited to be able to try them the right way.
It shouldn’t be blurry! We messed up and left the autofocus on when we were sitting together and since we were slightly different distances from the lens, and it was low light in the market, there were a couple of times where one of us is out of focus and the other isn’t, that’s a technical error that we’ve learned about and corrected since filming that.

Everyone loves that tea at Mot, which makes me wonder why they've not opened locations in HCMC and Hanoi as well. I was surprised you guys didn't like the cau lau as every Western vlogger I've seen so far liked it - typically the "sauce" is at the bottom so it needs to be stirred/mixed before eating. What surprised me even more was that you guys ate banh xeo without any of the veggies and herbs typically used to wrap it in...that's like a travesty! Banh xeo is never eaten alone like that so I'm still shocked she served it to you that way.

They should! It would probably be very successful!
It’s not that we didn’t like it, it just wasn’t our favorite Vietnamese dish we’d tried.
The flavor was amazing, but it was just a lot to eat with all the textures. We did stir it, but Ashley just likes soups more than stirfrys. Maybe if it had been the first dish of the day it would have had a different impression. The flavors were great though!
And yea! We had no idea about the bánh xèo cause she didn’t provide us with the greens! 😱 Sometimes, a food tour would obviously be better because they would help us understand… but we like trying to figure it out for ourselves, plus we have all of you guys to guide us in the right direction. 🤗

@@mikeandashley Ah, okay. If Ashley prefers soups, then I'd suggest she try bun rieu, banh canh cua (may be difficult if you're a texture person as some regions go heavy on the tapioca so it can be very gloopy), bun ca cay (fish noodle soup from the north that contains fried fish in it...saw Chad Kubanoff eat it in his video and it looks awesome), banh da cua (from Hai Phong, but should be good in Hanoi), etc. Or give other dry noodles a try like the dry chicken pho (pho tron) that's supposed to be great in Hanoi.

This was the first time I've seen it served without veggies. It doesn't make sense from a Vietnamese cuisine perspective as fried foods are usually eaten with veggies, herbs, etc., to balance the oil used in the frying. It should be eaten the same way we eat our cha gio (fried spring rolls) at home...and it's what makes Vietnamese food uniquely fresh, interactive, customizable, etc.

@@mikeandashleyI'm very excited to see how much enthusiasm you deliver in these Vietnam videos, and as always, I'm very happy to write long comments packed with suggestions to foreigners who travel Vietnam. I hesitate at first because I thought you guys only respond to the original comment with a heart like many other bigger channels, and not check the replies. But after a while, I see that you guys have been so engaged with the viewers, I decided to jump in and make these comments.
If you guys ever feel like wanting an adventure, try long distance motorbiking between cities, regions, or even across Vietnam. When it comes to roadtripping, Vietnam has a big community and I'm sure there are many videos and forums that discuss about experience, routes, places to visit, and whatnot. Even some bigger channel like TIM and FIN has done that journey, and they also explored Son Doong cave as well. It's currently the biggest cave in the world.
Tia and Cheveyo from One Pack Wanderers are also currently doing a Northern Vietnam roadtrip on the motorbikes. They are definitely at level 2 or 3 or something, in traveling Vietnam, where level 1 is for the first timers.
I understand that this could be your first time visiting Vietnam so I say you just do the normal tourist thing. But the next time you come back, and if your love for Vietnam still hasn't subsided, let's go up to the next level. You can try more dishes that you haven't, and/or you can also do a motorbike road trip to see more of Vietnam.
I have given recommendations about what can you do in Vietnam to many foreigners before.
If you think Vietnam has a great food scene, next time definitely please try some of the underrated dishes, dishes that are actually very good and even better than the overhyped ones. I know there are other noodle soups that are even better than Pho, but I'm sure you will find those gems. Pho is great and no wonder why it is the national dishes, but you will be surprised it's only the very small tip of a huge iceberg. Vietnam is one of the countries where you can write a whole dictionary for every single dish. The cuisine is so rich and abundant. It's one of the healthiest and tastiest too.
Talking about finding gems, it's like a scavenger hunt. Different regions will give you different surprises. But Saigon and Ha Noi still has a lot of hidden gems that only locals know. See if you can find them. Hint: peek into some Vietnam "graduate/veteran" Max McFarlin and Chad Kubanoff to learn more about Vietnam cuisine 😉
Some foreigners that love Vietnam so much that they even make tiktok skits about Vietnam and speak the language, such as Will in Vietnam, and HanQuocBros.
I heard that for some of them, Vietnam has changed their life for the better, and even forever.
Welcome to Vietnam, Mike and Ashley.

    • @mikeandashley
      @mikeandashley  11 месяцев назад +1

Thank you so much! We absolutely love Vietnam, and will be returning at some point to experience beyond the standard tourist affairs.
We’re glad you’ve noticed that we like to engage with our audience. To us, it’s the most important thing about this adventure we’re on. We want to experience new things and meet new people, and what better place to start and engage than with people who’ve shown and interest in our adventures! ☺️
We really appreciate your recommendations as well. We start to get more comfortable with dishes and as our trip progresses, we try some off the beaten path foods that we’re recommended to us by people we know who either live or have lived in Vietnam.
It’s our dream to roadtrip the country on a motorbike. This time, we came with too many bags to carry while biking long distances, so we’d like to come with more minimal setups so we can comfortably and safely make the journey, hence why you don’t see us on motorbikes in this series.
We look forward to returning to Vietnam to dive deeper into the rich culture, lush landscapes and incredible cuisine. Thank you so much for your support, kind words and recommendations. 🤗

RUclipsr Phuc Map also said he loved eating banh canh cua a lot as well. It's always my first or 2nd choice along with com tam in Vietnam. But one tricky thing is how to find a really good place and not paying over 200K for a bowl, Idk what is the average price now since my last trip was over a decade ago and we paid about 60K for a small bowl and sometime I had two. I really missed it , even here in the Socal which has the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam we could not find a place where they could cook it as good as they do in Saigon.

      Hi,
It’s not that they can’t make bánh canh cua, skills wise, in SoCal as good up to your expectation. It’s because the main ingredient is not available in SoCal. I’m talking about the rice paddies crab. In SoCal, they have to substitute that with dried shrimps and egg yolks. The unique flavor of rice paddies crab can’t be imitated. Other than that, the broth, the vegetables, the service, hygiene, …and everything else is way better than in Vietnam.

guys, Vietnam is not Thailand. you don't need to put your hands together like at 9:35 when saying thank you. saying "cam on" with a smile and a nod would do just fine.

Thanks for the heads up! I guess after spending three months in Thailand, it just became a habit. 😅 We still do it everywhere we go! Next time, we’ll just smile and nod. 😊

@@mikeandashley I was about to comment this. Putting your hands together is definitely a common Thai expression. However, in Vietnam, you only do that in Buddhist contexts/environment. It's still very polite and even spiritual if you still put your hands together to express gratitude in Vietnam, and people will still appreciate you. A majority of Vietnamese follow Buddhism, and while putting your hands together isn't a common expression in Vietnam, it's still widely understood. Almost every Buddhist does that when they pray. You don't have to do that to say hello or good bye because it looks very formal, but to express gratitude, it's still very good practice. I'm sure most Vietnamese people won't mind, but just to make sure you are aware of the culture differences, we don't put our hands together to greet, wave goodbye, or express thanks. If you still decide to do it, it's your personal choice and Vietnamese people still respect it.
And Vietnam and Thailand, while there are clearly differences, I really appreciate Thai culture. Thailand and Vietnam are so close to each other, there's no doubt we might have influenced each other in some ways.
While Northern Vietnam got more influence from the countries in the Sinosphere (China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan), Southern Vietnam got influence from Cambodia, Thailand...
Vietnam picked up culture from different countries and that makes our culture diverse and rich.
In Vietnam, when you put your hands together, people will just think that you are very kind and polite. Nodding and smiling are the general expression. There is always room to grow. When you visit Buddhist temples or pagodas in Vietnam or any East Asia countries, you will see people putting their hands together, and you already knew how to do it 🙏🏼 You guys are special in my eyes because you travel with a thoughtful and beautiful heart.

@douglashtang Thanks for the in depth explanation. It’s definitely something we picked up and became habit in Thailand. We’ll get used to the cultures in different countries as we travel more and more. ☺️

@@mikeandashley No worries about having that habit while you travel Vietnam. I encourage you to keep it and use it if it's not against your belief/religion. It's not offensive at all. It's a universally accepted expression. In India they do that while saying Namaste. In Thailand they do that while greeting or showing gratitude. Vietnamese people appreciate that expression because we do that all the time when going to temples, when talking to monks, when wanting to show appreciation (to a more meaningful degree than just a casual thanks). It's a very useful and even beautiful gesture to do, even when you come back to America. I have a professor in California who married a Thai wife and he still put his hands together when wanting to show thanks or appreciation in an American classroom. It's a good thing that you learned it, and not just use it to cope with the locals while traveling. I know it's useful because when you want to ask for something, you have a higher chance of success if you put your hand together because it shows that you ask with a polite and sincere heart.
