no, the main star is a large star called peter, with a smaller and hotter binary companion called lois and a gas giant called chris, and rocky planet called stewie. stewie has a large moon, making it technically a binary planet with brian. in the outskirts of the solar system there's a dwarf planet called meg that orbit is so far it's sometimes influenced by nearby star systems

The process for naming planets is too slow. They need to relax the rules, especially the ones about cultural significance and having a fan base. At this rate, we will never be able to name all of the exoplanets. And why does the IAU insist that we try to apply earth culture to alien worlds? Why not let space have totally foreign names? It’s alien after all, it doesn’t have to bear resemblance to anything from earth.

The fact that so many asteroids have names, and we can't use names already used by asteroids, kinda makes things difficult. I imagine half the stuff I've thought of has an asteroid or something named after it already. And there is the slight matter of common names often coming from a culturally significant origin, then becoming commonplace over time. You can't really go for the Abrahamic patriarchs, since like a million people are named after each one. Then there's the matter of cultural significance ... to whom? Gnosticism died centuries ago, so does that disqualify the star Gnosis from having planets Sophia, Samael, and Ialdalbaoth? Somehow I think the Babylonian or Zoroastrian pantheons would be OK, but I also somehow would be more surprised if there aren't a dozen asteroids already with Babylonian god names.
And the "no people" rule runs into problems, if a culturally significant figure may or may not have been a real person. Would the IAU have to reject the names of religious figures whose historicity is debated, since otherwise they'd be taking a position on the matter? Would be easier to say "no persons, living or dead, unless they died more than x years ago."

    • @Kyplanet893

14:22 Re: proper planet names are better for public outreach
    Reality seems to disagree.
Planets are, ultimately, just objects in a closely linked system (their stellar system). And companies (entities whose survival depends on efficient operation), when they are doing makerting (public outreach) for products that are parts of closely linked systems, usually use descriptive indecies (be it numbers or keywords) and not just random unique names. For example:
    Smartphones - indecies
    Operating systems - indecies (mostly)
    CPUs - indecies
    GPUs - indecies
    Motherbards - indecies
PSUs - for ones that are acually marketed - indecies (and, iirc, even ones that aren't usually have at least a power rating in the name somewhere)
RAM, SSDs and cooling - idk (but when they are discussed general performance characteristics (so, effecitvely, indecies) are used)
Major updates for games - indecies (either major version increase (i.e. 4.0) or !!!descriptive!!! expansion names (i.e. PoE: Settlers of Kalgur being about settlement management))
Thus indecies seemt to be better for public outreach than unique names.
This may have something to do with the fact that, while random unique names may be catchier (and for exoplanets even that is debatable, because, in current culture, "55 Cancri e" sounds like an exoplanet name and "Janssen" doesn't), they start to suck as soon as one wants to explore the rest of the linked system (for exoplanets it would be harder to both find and keep connected memories of what the (host) star and other planets in the (sub)system are called).
(I called uniue names "random", bacuse, while they should be thematically linked, IAU has probably already ran out of universally well known themes, so, for most people, most thematically linked names won't feel as such.)
So, while indecies may have issues, using just (effectively random) names is worse.
One good thing names have is that they dont mean anything. Which means they can't let's say, become misleading if you discover planets not in the order from closest to farthest from the star.
So, if i had any influence, i would, roughly, propose:
(to indicate it's a star) + for stars (that don't have historic widely used unique names)
    +

For example, I'd like to know if a planet is covered in water or gasuous hydrogen, and we can't always tell those kinds of situations apart.
Hell, is it really angood idea to name a place tousands of years before anyone could ever possibly reach them? I also think that with how many worlds there are out there, we are fery quickly going to run out of culturally significant names. I expect the names assigned these way will be a tiny blip in history and might be forgotten completely.
There's also a significant difference between exoplanets and things in our solar system: we probably wont interact with any of these exoplanets in any meaningful way for millions of years, whereas asteroids and dwarf planets are likely to be important in a century or two.

Real shitty rules heh? I mean all planets were named basically by "hey, this planet can be a house of a god" or "let's name it after our glorious emperor". Astronomers nowadays are really bad in their jobs. Pluto also as an example was named after a roman god. So is this name wrong? Callisto, Titan, Phobos, Deimos, Europa, Triton and many other moons have those names. For me the names should be from roman and greek mythologies or from other mythologies algo.

    • @Kyplanet893

I typically prefer to use the original designations of exoplanets for scientific purposes, but the idea that people can’t switch over to the proper name is nonsense. Gonggong was discovered in 2007 and didn’t get named “Gonggong” until 2019, yet people started using its proper name immediately. People are wanting 2002 MS4 to get a proper name because “2002 MS4” isn’t very eloquent and they recognize a proper name would be better.
