      +Chespinoid thats not the point though. The point is even if these were M games Gamestop takes advantage of its customers. People buy these games from them and teenagers know nothing better but to go to GameStop. Why couldn't they donate spare accessories or headphones to boys and girls clubs or somewhere else. Gamestop has no moral values they're greedy. GameStop needs competition something that will shut them down the same way Circuit City was shut down by Best Buy.

    As a former Gamestop employee things only get thrown away if they don't already work. They are cut or destroyed for one of two reasons. One, they were issued as a return to vendor but the vendor requested their destruction. Not destroying them is a breach of contract with the vendor and opens up Gamestop to a lawsuit. Two, Loss prevention reasons. Items that are returned as defective are destroyed by a manager prior to being discarded to prevent internal theft. Employee's friend returns a game as defective to get another copy. Item is then destroyed to prevent the employee or friend form doing exactly what you're doing.
    Unless you're suggesting Gamestop should be donating defective merchandise to kids....

    • @GenErikGamerGuy
      @GenErikGamerGuy 9 лет назад +49

      Well yes, some things don't get destroyed sure to lack of time or sheer forgetfulness, and sometimes returned items that work but the customer was inept come through too. My goal was to explain the norm. There will always be outliers

    • @falling12121
      @falling12121 9 лет назад +13

      Adding to your point, people seem to forget that when they trade in a game, Gamestop might be only giving you a small percentage of what they are selling it for, but they are not going to sell it at that price.
      They will have that copy for months and months. It will go down from $50 to $40, then to $30. You might trade a recently bought game and be annoyed you only get $15 for it. But that game will likely not be sold until it is worth $20. It is very unliky that it gets sold at $50 pre owned.
      As a company, Gamestop needs to factor that in (especially with so many games having a 9 month life cycle) when they trade games. If an Assassins Creed, NBA 2K or COD game doesn't get sold in its first 9-12 months, then it is likely not going to be sold at all.

      Hopefully this will be the top comment soon but I really don't have that much faith at this point. It's more likely that there will be an angry redditor mob and a press release saying the same shit than people actually reading or informing one-another. The most likely scenario of all is that people go to bed feeling that there is still injustice in the world that upvotes can solve by spreading the word.

    So many stores do thsi kind of crap.
    Clothing stores slash all the clothing then throw it away instead of donating it to goodwill or other charities that can get it to homeless/poor people that could use it.

    • @rskubar
      @rskubar 9 лет назад +20

      Because it is bad for the business.
      Would you want to pay premium prices for a shirt that the great majority of poor/homeless people use?
      Generally, the company will tell the redistributor that they will get x% back per item if they return those items. For some items, the costs of sending them back could be more than the price of the items, and instead, the company will request that the items get destroyed to ensure they don't loose money (it would be bad for business if every game was given out for free after a few months).

    • @Thatguy3339
      @Thatguy3339 9 лет назад +9

      Actually, it tends to be (in pretty much any retail store out there) that damaged merchandise are destroyed so that the store is reimbursed (at least partially), and doesn't lose money, if the stuff was not destroyed they would be breaching contracts with the manufacturers.

      I used to work at Target in receiving. All items that can be donated are donated - ripped bags of dog food that can't be sold are donated to pet shelters, clothes and other items that went on clearance and didn't sell are donated to goodwill (Goodwill actually marks them up in price), damaged boxes of food or food close to expiration are donated to food shelters...etc. So not all companies do this. I hate Target, I really do, but this is one good thing they do. Also, all damaged product in stores are reimbursed by the company that sold the product. If you go to Target, drop a Glade candle and shatter it, it's not Target that eats the cost, it's SCJ who pays it.

    GameStop here! We completely agree with the suggestions of donating games or accessories to charitable organizations. We do that routinely with our partners Ronald McDonald House Charities, Make-A-Wish Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
    As for this video, it is our company practice to discard or destroy products that are damaged, defective, no longer work, or cannot be repaired, as we would never want to provide any customer or charity a product they could not use or enjoy. It is our understanding that this was the case with the products shown in this video.

    • @animatedlife00
      @animatedlife00 9 лет назад +1

      i was gonna say that the reasons gamestop threw those games, controllers, and consoles away are because they were damaged, defective, no longer work, or cannot be repaired. Im pretty sure we all have threw away consoles, games, and other electronics that were damaged or irreparable.

    • @Yugioh_Flo
      @Yugioh_Flo 9 лет назад +13

      There are ways of disc repair though......the look of those disks seemed fixable to me and if so why did you intentionally put a slash through each of those disks? As well as cut the cords to each of the wired head sets, controllers, etc. shit doesn't add up.

    • @jRex918
      @jRex918 9 лет назад +6

      im not buying it; so you guys bought a controller with a cut cord? lol bullshit alert! I can understand you guys buying a game with a cut on it; maybe you thought it could work! but a controller that was cut all the way to the base? not buying it lol

    • @jrjuggalo159
      @jrjuggalo159 9 лет назад +2

      jRex918 Controllers and headsets are cut because while they CAN be repaired if someone wanted to, it would cost Gamestop more money to do so, so if the headset or controllers don't work they'll just chuck them and cutting the cords prevents people from just taking things and getting say a $50 item for free.
      American Strength Disk repair is possible yes, but it also depends on how severe the disk is damaged. As for slashing games that were not operable, most likely it is just company policy.

    The sad part is that nearly every business in America does this. Anything that they see as "obsolete" gets destroyed and thrown out. And I do not think of this as a matter of losing out on video games or controllers or systems or whatever (even though that is their intended and still functional purpose). But think about the materials that go into these things and get dumped in a landfill and then the plastics end up in the oceans. In 2010 alone an estimated 5 to 13 million metric tons of plastics made it's way into the oceans. Ever hear of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? And like I said, its not just Gamestop, nearly every business just destroys and throws out what they do not sell, rarely is it recycled or re-purposed. I used to work for a toy distribution company and oh my god the amount of plastic that gets thrown out in the dumpster every single day. Not recycled, not re-purposed, straight to the landfill and then incinerated into toxins or haphazardly making its way into our environment. Ever go into a Dunkin Doughnuts? Do you know what they do at the end of the night? They throw out garbage bags full of doughnuts and bagels. Same thing with nearly every other similar food distribution stores. I would know because a friend of mine used to work at Dunkin Doughnuts and he would throw the bags of doughnuts in the back of his car and bring em to parties instead. All of that food is thrown out when it could be given to the homeless or to poor families who cannot afford to feed themselves. Yet we just throw it all out.
    American corporate consumerism makes me sick.
    This is how our world will fail, humans will destroy themselves.

      Brad Setzer Hardly throwing away money, it's maintaining the value of the product. If you're able to get products that stores discard for a low price or free, the stores wouldn't be able to sell any more copies. Therefore, to protect their own profits, they destroy discarded copies. Besides, nothing is thrown out for no reason.

    There's nothing that supports the legitimacy of this video. What is to say that this dude isn't some rich douche that just decided to dump all his gaming paraphernalia in a dumpster to make a viral video? Or that he didn't go into GameStop and bought it all second hand just for this video? Or that he's part of one of the AAA producer's front groups and did this to discredit GameStop?
    A few things actually talk for this, one being the quality of the video not being consistent with dumpster diving. Good sound despite the noisy environment points to an external mic, which in turn speaks for at least a second person being there. The quality of the video is not consistent with the cheap phone or camera a person that needs to resort to dumpster diving for games would have.
    Another thing is the constant mention of the company name, a tactic well used in fake virals in recent years. There's also the same thing you see in many fake viral accounts, where the account is fairly young, often only a few months old, with either baby vids or pet vids in the same high quality as the "viral" one. It's almost engineered in its structure... and look at JayPee's history? What do we see? 5 months worth of baby vids in the same high quality!
    I am not saying that this is fake, but I'm saying that nothing so far points to this being legit, or if it is legit, that it would be a common practice for GameStop. I am also saying that people need to think a little bit before reacting like the world is about to end!

    • @JayPee
      @JayPee  9 лет назад +13

    I completely agree with you, man! This is sad to see. I've been lucky enough to find FULL games, even systems in my videos diving at GameStop. But it's so ridiculous how they can't just DONATE or at least CLEARANCE these items. I advise my viewers to go dumpster diving, because a lot of stuff (when the GMs at GS don't come in and destroy it) are completely usable and fixable. Rarely do I find that they still destroy their finds.

    Also, not to condone gamestops actions (I used to work for them a while back and know how profitable of a company they are), but the cost of refurbishment of mass amounts of "disc" games these days is pointless with the amount of circulating copies and the current production outputs of new copies.
    That being said, "defectiveness" of these games is often times subjective or from an employees desire to not wanting to deal with a persons attitude on their warranty replacement which they believe is warranted. If you can't reproduce the defect often times if they have already paid for the warranty replacement they will just give them a new copy.
    The Gamestop I worked at was in a low income area and I would often just say "fuck it" and give them a new copy because if the game was somehow defective I would want to make the kid happy over denying them a game.
    Gamestop should have methods in place to donate games like these to library's, schools, group homes, women's shelters, homeless shelters, and so on. However this could also be said for "expired" food from Star Bucks, Einstein's Bagels, and other companies. Sadly this is not the case.
    Great video though, I wish more people saw stuff like this and understood how industries like these work.

      Donate to who? Favor one spot over another and deal with all that? Donate shooting and killing games to young children and assume they have the consoles to play them? The video is clearly misleading. Gamestop doesn't normally throw out perfectly working items. They further destroy or cut items because they are already broken and not working. This bum is breaking the law and trespassing and Gamestop doesn't what these bums going through their trash on a daily basis. This bum in the video is just mad that he couldn't use and sell all that stuff.

I only buy physical copies to build my collection, the usability on any other system, and they also have resell value. etc. You're trippin'. There's place like craigslist you can resell or trade your stuff, you don't and shouldn't go to gamestop for that.

    Actually, you can play the scratched games, if you have the ability to install from a disc that is unscratched. Just borrow a friends disc and install to USB, then as long as you have a disc that does not have a scratched innermost or outermost ring - its usually a go.

    If there are scratched discs, there should be a local dvd store/rental store/game store where they do scratch repairs. Or at least, that's how we do it in Australia. Most of the games are probably broken or corrupted anyways, and the consoles/other hardware most likely defective.

      JayPee If some of the games go to a good cause, I can respect that. I just get disgusted by the people who are in it only for themselves, and turn around and resell the games. Those games were trashed either because they were bad games, or the scratches were too severe, and since Gamestop is already in enough hot water over selling RRoD consoles, I'd think they wouldn't want people getting their hands on games that are faulty if they came from them. I am quite familiar with corporate policies.

  • @codemaster387

    When games were tested and didn't work, when headphones weren't working because the internals were damaged or the speakers blew, and when accessories that didn't work correctly, it was made sure that someone couldn't just pull these items from the garbage and try to make a quick buck from broken items. People buy used games and replace the disks with broken ones all the time to get a free game. Why the hell would this stuff be donated if it didn't work in the first place? And why let people try to take these, turn around and sell them?

  • @luisff7030
    @luisff7030 8 лет назад

    Here at Portugal we have shops that do the same. But I know 2 shops, because this is an internal secret.
    The first shop that I know is selling furniture and house decoration. I know because the people outside that goes to his private zone see good furniture at his private dumpster to be destroyed. The dumpster is at the back of the shop for the people not see.
    The shop "Pingo Doce", I know this at the 2005, destroy all of his food that cannot sell. The food that have 3 days before the expire date is destroyed too. The destruction of the food is supervised by the chef and the workers are not allowed to eat or bring it to the home. A worker told me that he opened all of the yogurts and with a fork dump it all in the garbage. All of the other food was open, destroyed if possible, and put in the garbage. I don't if this continue today.

Why would GameStop purposely miss out on making money with games such as black ops 2 and GTA. if they worked GameStop wouldn't have thrown them out, maybe they would have still thrown out Madagascar, but call of duty and GTA no

    Gamestop is actually not liable for this. The company is incapable of selling games with a certain code after a certain date all set by the developer that made the game itself. It's a way of keeping inventor and a listing of their sales record and a way the developers determine their earnings throughout the sales of the game being launched or sold. For instance MW3: if Treyarch sets the date at 11/28/2015 at that point coding: "8yg564stukg5" is no longer being used the game becomes a what we like to call "dead sale". Why is it a "dead sale" you may ask. Simply because there is a quota that was set and was not reached by their deadline. Now as JayPee stated the games COULD be given away but it's not Gamestop's call on that part which is why sometimes when you walk in and see games on a sort of "clearance" rack selling for really cheap and sometimes they're actually games you thought you'd never see there like "Red Dead Redemption", "Fifa 14-15", etc..hell even Destiny was selling for 13 dollhairs. But, that's also not decided by Gamestop that's decided by the developers. And if they do not want their game selling for that low they can have it destroyed like you see here.

    GameStop disposes items this way because they could not sell them. They know about dumpster divers who, at some point in the past, tried selling them back. This is a way to prevent that.
    The kids at the children's hospitals get Nintendo 64's, Wii's, GameCubes, PS2's, Xbox's, and even Xbox 360's. Let's be honest, those consoles have a few of the best selection of games in existence.

    regardless of money or no, waste is a huge problem. Maybe the items are broken, but they could re use the materials. When electronic items are disposed of waste regulations have to be followed, in the UK atleast. This has lead to a lot of electronic items being sent to third world countries for disposal as it is cheaper, using techniques much more crued than ours. Some case studies show child leukemia at 40% in areas where this disposal takes place.

  • @StandingUpForBetter

    Good point. You not only have children's hospitals but the "M" rated games could go teen shelters and the Boys and Girls Clubs. I have donated to a teen shelter in my local area. They are (1) are always low on money because they are under budgeted and (2) those teens could use a little distraction video games could provide and in the very least these games could be an incentive to keep them off the streets. Great video! It looks like Gamestop did not even try to give donate these games. It is not even smart from a business perspective because (1) they could write it off as a tax right off as you said and (2) it could give them some good PR instead of bad PR.

  • @llmatticusll
    @llmatticusll 8 лет назад

    It's called a field destroy and they do it to defective items. Why would they donate broken things to other places. The reason for making it obvious that it's broken is because people will grab them and try and resale them to another store or pawn shop. None of that product was in working condition.

    Regardless of your personal feelings about Gamestop, he has a point. Why not donate these things? I bet it would be a nice upper for children laid up in hospitals, or something fun for kids in orphanage (like he was trying to say), or even just a promotion to give to random people. It would only be good PR for the company, so why not?

  • @Sulfen

    You can't donate used games to hospitals because they have a high chance of compromising the kid's immune systems. I donate a couple of games every year to my local kid's hospital and the first time I went there they didn't take my opened used games because it would compromise the children who already have weak immune systems from all the surgeries and medications.

    Blockbuster used to throw away their vhs tapes and bash them with hammers and take a key attached to the cash register and scratch the disc and if they didn't sell certain DVDs and they would throw them in the dumpster with the yellow plastic locks basically requiring a tool to open them.
    It's a common thing to see.
