thanks for the heads up. i cobbed together a dual USB sata adapter and a laptop hard drive with a phone charger and it fired up like a champ. goin' to take a few passes but all my wife's cooking show recipes are safe and peace in the valley resumes.
Why to (expletive deleted) does Dish support not recommend this? If the USB power in the dish box is to limited, they should say so and recommend this solution. This is a Dish management problem with their tech support people.
I used my Sea gate free agent external hard drive that I had laying around, hooked up to my 211z to use as a DVR, I don't have it hooked up with a AC power supply just USB 2.0 and it is working fine. It's only 500 gb but that is large enough for me.I had to pay the $40 to activate the DVR service.
That hard drive you are using is a portable external hard drive. the only drives that come with external power are desktop drives those run about half because they are less portable but are also using NAS drives so they can stay on longer and won't fail as fast.
You can purchase replacement power supplies easily enough. Seeing this six years later. A bit late to help you but others might find it useful. I lost a Western digital and easily replaced it. If that’s not an option there is a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter that you can buy. I use it to recover data for friends and transfer it to upgraded drives or some other resource like a file share. So that drive you have sitting in the box these past 6 years is still salvageable.

I just found a 2008 hard drive that needs external power and I don't have the power cord so its useless.
