Definitely a good find, considering going around to local thrift shops to pick up old receivers, most places around me sell them for like 10 bucks, if I could find 1tb drives in all of them I’d be thrilled.
I did not know that about the access cards. I'm surprised DirecTV didn't tell me about that when I threw out my DVR. I had the same one as you. Mine had a 1TB HDD as well, now I use it as a backup for my PC.
I replaced mine with a WD Purple 2TB 256mb cache HD. The Green only has 64mb of cache, and isn't designed for constant read/write/erase. I'm surprised they last as long as they do.
If you have to send the receiver back... it's probably not a good idea to 'open it up' to remove the HDD, or you may be charged. I'd like to copy the drive... as I was told I need to send mine back. I may sit on it awhile and see if they pester me. I paid for my first DVR, then it got replaced with a Genie... so I'm not convinced I need to return mine. Surprising on how many people say they didn't have to send theirs back... 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂

These hard drives endure a lot of stress and might not always work
Really, that's interesting. What other places could I find receivers?

I still have my genie and stop using Directv for years now. They don’t bother me about it so it’s mines now 😊
Were you able to still watch the recordings on the older dvr? I don’t have to send my genie back and having it replaced in a day
Was the fan exhausting air from the hard drive ?
What are the CPUs in this model of devices.
How to wipe

Get a usb to sata adapter or something, plug it into a computer and look in disk management and format the drive
