Salvaging Data Storage from Roadside Garbage! - How To Format Dish Network DVR Receiver Hard Drives

  • I recently found these Dish Network Hopper and Joey satellite receiver DVR units in the trash by the side of the road. It's not uncommon to find such units in the garbage or in Goodwill or other thrift stores cheaply. They hide some stuff inside worth salvaging for other projects. Many such units hide large hard drives which can be ideal for data storage in other devices. But formatting them isn't a straightforward process. In this video, I'll show how to reformat a Dish Network Satellite Receiver DVR (TiVo) HARD DRIVE in Windows 10 when they aren't recognized by Windows.

    I do this all the time. Most Satellite or Cable boxes with DVR functions have a 500gb to 2 tb hard drive. Most are formatted for Linux, which is why sometimes cannot be recognized by Windows or Macs. But most Macs and all Linux computers will see the disk, just reformat to NTFS (Win) or AFS (mac).

      @TheGuitologist 4 года назад +1

      Some of these have a piece of code in the drive itself that keeps the HDD off until it receives an on signal from the device. That can be erased by booting into a command prompt, but that way is more involved. Without doing it this way, my laptop with Windows 10 and my desktop machine with Windows 10 just don’t see these disks at all. It’s as if they aren’t even there.

    Used to do the same thing when I worked in the "converter room" for Commie-cast. We used to get loads of Dish Network, AT&T, and Tivo boxes all the time on "dish winback" sales. 👍🙂

    This is possible as SATA suports hot-swap.
    Its best to now run CrystalDiskInfo and see how good the drives are; Number of powered on hours, number of startups, head error rate, maximum G-force expreienced etc.

    Have you tried Diskpart from an administrator elevated command prompt with the disk hooked directly to your computer ? That should help getting rid of proprietary formatted volumes.

      You won’t be able to retrieve the data. Def not on Windows. They all formatted for a Linux file system. Pretty much can only reformat the disks and use them for storage.

    I've did this for a long time. It also works with Direct tv , Tivo cable boxes ect. There are programs that help with this too if the hot swap method fails but thats another video. I've gotten anywhere from 500gig to 2tb drives. WD seems to be the most common.

    I guess these boards are simple computers, probably standard 12, 5 and 3.3v lines there. So I believe there's more risk of you damaging the board with static than the board damaging you with its electricity. The supply is another thing.

    You can actually also really use the chassis for any kind of diy measurement device projects (power supply, amp etc).

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist 4 года назад

      I was thinking that too. Power supplies are keepers. Fans, electrolytics, etc. lots of good parts.

    • @p_mouse8676
      @p_mouse8676 4 года назад

      @@TheGuitologist yeah. In general an off the shelf chassis is more expensive. Another good tip is to look for old audio amplifiers. In my experience the transformer is mostly totally fine. Just remove the amp section with a TDA7294, TDA7293 or LM3886 and you got yourself a nice new amp. Obviously you can use the transformer also for other things.

    Interesting video. However, the combination of the dark area in which to SEE what you're doing and the jumping picture between the TV and the DVR box makes it very hard to follow. Will have to watch it a couple times to see if I can understand exactly what is being done.

    I have an old Dish Network receiver that wont power up, it just keeps wiring like it's going to start. I desperately want to retrieve the DVR videos on it. I tried taking out the drive & connecting it to my PC with a USB adapter. It sees the drive but I can't access it. I found it has a special format to prevent this. So, is there a software to access it or do I find a working receiver of the same model, or can I just plug it into the external USB outlet on my current Hopper? Pleas tel me, what can I do?

      Same vip722k here , just happen 2 weeks ago. Do u think when they send an update to the receiver , it loaded a complete hard drive failure? So they want us to upgrade to the hopper?

    • @GereDJ2
      @GereDJ2 5 месяцев назад

      @@bigstud98 Absolutely, Yes, I do. The VIP722 Dish receivers are obsolete units and are only replaced with same by specific request of customer. I do know they have the capability to remove or otherwise delete recorded items from the VIP722 hard drive while the receiver is connected to the outside dish. Also, certain other recorded programs have a delete date, timer-code to auto-delete itself after a certain amount of time on the hard drive, like DishNet rental movies. This has happened several times. If you record a DishNet, Pay-Per-view movie, it will auto-delete itself after one additional viewing or auto-delete after 30 days time, which ever comes first. This is no secret, Dishnet will tell you this if you ask. DishNet is a rather shifty, corrupt company that also charges up the Yang.
