It's fantastic to see a repair like this. A lesser experienced person might have given up on an old lathe and sent it for scrap.

I agree with you totally. My Father bought a milling machine made in 1939 in Germany, Fritz Werner. Has a NT40 taper spindle (Vertical with Quill feed, manual) Dad paid $1700 Au for it with a broken X axis lead/feed screw. His Lathe and mine were not long enough to cut the double start thread to make a new one.
$1000.00 later he has a VERY good machine, Dad has passed now and I have same. My point is I learned from this excellent video of Keith's and is tons cheaper than making a new one! Shame that both had to be worked on because of a mistake. Cheers from John, Australia.

NEAT trick hot straightening a spinning shaft. I thought I knew most of what there is to know about fixing bent stuff - map the kinks, work them out one at a time, go back and refine if necessary, bring in the over-all error, etc but there's always something new like this localized hot spin technique. Now that I see it, the method is an obvious extension of common straightening technique suited for heat-tolerant materials.
Thanks for the well-presented lesson. I'll spread it among my proteges.

Hello, mister. 1 Your torch may blow up. Repair it. 2. When shaft in lathe and you heat it by torch and you already bend it and hold it by back center of lathe (I don't know a right name of it, sorry, english is not my native language) so now hammer it by light hammer to remove internal tensions of metal. 3. Cloth on your lathe may be hooked by spindle of lathe. Use a sheet of soft metal or plywood instead or above the cloth. 4. Best wishes from Russia. Happy new year ☺

Another awesome job/video, thanks! One question though; what makes you decide to straighten this way, as opposed to your heat & blast cool method? The availability of a center (in the shaft)? Come to think of it, that would make a good vid; explaining the distinctions that cause you to use the different methods (press, flame & blast cool, & lathe/flame). Thanks again!

Good stuff Kieth. Good to see some practical accuracy instead of the guys who go for the nth degree all the time. 5 thou over a shaft that long , its prob better than when it left the factory!
