    V-belt drives can be a PITA! Years ago when I was in the Mill Supply business mechanical power transmission was one of the things I was the "Go To" guy for. Customer came in and said he need four "C" belts a certain length. So I grabbed them. He left. Came back later and threw them on the floor. "These don't work!" "Um. What's wrong?" "I can get two of them tight but the others flop around!" "OK. Wait. Are these all on the same pulleys?" "Yeah!" "Oh. You need matched length belts." "What does THAT mean?" "Give me a minute." Got a matched set and explained it to him. SOB didn't even thank me.

    Hey Mr. Fenner funny I just had to machine two 10" Cast Iron pulleys yesterday, was my first time trying it had to go slow on the cuts but got it done. Cast Iron is not my favorite metal to machine :) thanks for the quick video.

    You sure did a v-belt groove before. I remember watching it, before I made a stepped pulley for my old lathe :)
    And you used a pressure arbor to turn the pulley. I had to do that as well to get some clearance for the compound slide.
    Pulley turned out fine but it did take few day in the freezing cold. One of my better projects :)

    I actually knew about diffent angles for different diameters, and there can just be one source for that kind of knowledge.
    You must have brought the subject up in an earlier video.

    Back about a few dozen years ago, I was at an auction of a shop that was going out of business. Allot of "stuff" was on the tables with prices on them. For no reason at all I bought a set of form tools for v belts for just a few bucks. I've only used them a few times, but it's nice to see how to do it with out them. Thanks.

    I'm glad your comfortable working next to the wheel of death. I would be all kind of frigged up. My wife would find me wrapped up in that. That just looks scary. My local machinist made me a 4 groove b belt pulley for my Mitsubishi 6D16 in my boat. Man he did a great job and I ran that for years until I repowered. I knew at the time it was an amazing feat. Thing bolted right up to the crank, ran true, and smooth. Machining is way above my level.

    Hi Keith I enjoyed the video I have had to machine a few pullies over the years in cast iron & aluminium I have ground up a profiled H.S.S tool stoned doing a couple of roughing parting off grooves first. You are correct shortening the tool gives ridgity equals good finish accurate machining. p.s.I am the same vintage 55 Cheers Dibbo

    Yep, I went to the hand book when I cut the belt groove in the aluminum crank pulley I made for my racing engine. No guess work when using the book. Good video :-)

    Hi Keith, great video. Do you just place the pulley blank between the fixed piece in the jaws, and the friction plate in the tailstock, or is there something in between, such as PSA paper, to provide additional friction between the materials?

      As was I. Kept that career for about five years until those new fangled auto cars came along. Concerned with my future I had little choice but to adopt slot car engineer until I retired.

    Thanks Keith! Always something interesting! Would it be advantageous to mount the blank on the hub and then indicate the hub on the lathe in order to make sure the pulley ended up concentric with the hub? Maybe that overkill for this application. Thanks as always!

      that was an old hub and looked to be worn on inside diameter, machining a full bore mandrel is a bit over board. ;{)-------

    I don't remember the Campbells Soup thingy (I'm a little older than you are) - perhaps my mom got the train, and never told me. LOL
    But I do remember saving Mallo Cup (candy) inserts, worth free Mallo Cups - when you saved enough.
    I also remember the toy baking soda diving submarine my mom sent away for, from a cereal company. That was in, like, 1954 or so.

    What would we do or where would we be without that good book/bible. Aluminium chip control can be a real pain eh. I used to reface a lot of D8 engine shives and eventually made dedicated high speed tools for them. Really sped up the job. Thanks for a visit to my past bud.

    I just checked my 1924 "good book" and V groove pulleys are not even a thing yet, only leather flat belts and manila round rope pulleys. the 2012 edition does cover 3V and A belts, still pretty close to your 1962 numbers.

    Dayco Top Gog belt....... Worked in the maint Dept of a Dayco Raw edge Belt Manufactoring Plant......You would be amazed at the process

    At about 23 minutes in, when I look at the bottom of the V on the right side, there is an apparent wobble in the taper. I don't get the physics/geometry of how that is possible. I have no doubt that it will be corrected at some point, but curious about the wobble part. Thanks! LOL! Never mind! Ear Bud Alert blew the wobble away!

    Could you of just flipped over the pulley on the lathe and made the 2nd side of the groove with the same parting tool?

    I'm pretty sure I've seen you cut a v-belt pulley before. It was a fair while ago I think.
    Speaking of crazy metric numbers, did you know that the inch has been defined as ~0.0254 metres since sometime in the 1880s? Just something I recently found out.

      The pressure plate he made would not have fit the other way, but surely he would have modified it if he had not found another bit suitable for the task.

    Thanks for the knowledge I see a few people ask why not flip it around to cut the other side I have been watching you long enough to know if you could you would. The male and female part of the pulley kept you from doing that. Don't under estimate the master.

      1 Meter = 39.3701 Inches. Divide by 1000 = 1 Millimeter = 0.0393701 Inches (roughly 39 thousandths) . That's the easiest conversion trick that I know. Easy to remember. So 10 mm = 0.0393701mm x 10 = .393701 Inch. Just a little bigger (0.017...") than 0.375"... or 3/8". Just saying.

    OK, dumb question from this simple guy - I can see the hub runs true with the lathe cause it was set up that way - but how is it we know for sure the bolt on hub is perfectly true with the pulley-? I think I missed something along the way cause I would never question your work Keith - im questioning my own lack of knowledge - thanks, mike

    Yeah I like too hss tool more than carbide tools to finishing pass was the material Cast iron or aluminum or...
    Noticed that many times it's easier to flip a pulley 180 and do other side.
    I don't hav hss inside bar Like you had🤧

    Why not flip the piece, and cut both sides toward the chuck, with the cutoff tool?
    That way, you're certain of getting the same angle on both sides of the groove.

    Turns out if you have a small radius on the hub you can keep a flat belt centered on the hub.

      samuel pine, I agree! V Belts drive from the sides and if they reach the bottom then they will not drive to the full extent or at all. Only other thing that I did not see mentioned was my good book (Machinists Bible as my father said) suggested file breaking the outer corners or perhaps another way of saying this will be deburing.     I would of trepaned a groove on the face of the slug to accomadate the other side..then just flip the part..no need to change tools or angles!!!--but thats just me lol
