  • There are dozens of reasons to think about backup power, some much more sinister than others. Let's talk about it.

I'm running the air conditioning unit off of my solar panels today. I added a wind generator about six weeks ago. I don't lose power here. I bought twenty big marine batteries at the parts house, a couple at a time. I'm not hooked up to the grid. My freezer doesn't thaw out either. I have 1400 watts of solar panels. I only need the gasoline generator to run the welder occasionally. I run stuff off of my Aims Power inverter charger, 2000 watts. There is less 🌞 sunshine power in the winter, but that's when the wind is blowing😊. I spent around six grand for everything. I have plenty of power. It doesn't have to cost fifty grand. The main cost is the batteries. Forget about being hooked up to the grid. Who needs it? 😂

Deep cell batteries with a power inverter is another option and can work hand in hand with a generator!

I get that everyone has different needs but if you use electricity every day, it's a bit silly to argue on the internet that you don't want backup power. But then I live in Texas that has a third world grid. I need backup power.

Great video, thank you Justin! I worry the most about EMP or CME'S. We lose power on a regular basis here in the woods. We invested in a whole house 20,000 kw propane generator that we had installed in 2018. They are VERY expensive all said & done it was about $12,000 but worth every cent. We also have a 2200W gas powered and a 1200W Solar power station (great sale last Christmas time for that). Nothing is sure fire, we could run out of propane, gas or have no sun for solar but at least we have some peace of mind. We are also well prepared in other areas. Food, water, self defense, winter preps (buddy heaters, sleeping bags, blankets...etc). Just praying we never have to put it all to use.

This commentary was spot on. Thanks for mentioning these. I think the reality of this doesn't become apparent until it really hits you. Unfortunately, power outages may increasingly become more "real" for a lot of us, especially the unprepared.

I went with a home solar panel system with powerwall. Due to shading issues and other stuff, I'm limited to 8.4kW. It's an inexhaustible energy source that pays for itself over time. In winter it generates nothing with snow on the roof, so I have equipment for brushing them off. I wouldn't bother during a blizzard if the grid is still functioning, but I have the option if it becomes necessary. Even on a cloudy day I should get enough power to run the whole house gas furnace, or if I get around to installing it, a mini-split electric heater for a room or two. The powerwall will run my house for 24 hours (without sunlight) during normal operation, but much longer if I turn off unnecessary things. $31,000-30% tax rebate = $21,700. It is an investment. It pays back, like a retirement account, but it also protects in other ways.

Thank you! Alternate power is my one shortfall in preparations. It’s so expensive and I just haven’t known where to begin. This was so timely.

Hi Justin, James of The Simple Prepper here. I live in Austin, TX. After the ice/snow storm in Feb. '21, I wasn't going to suffer through that way again. At least we still had gas cooking, that was our saving grace to stay bugged-in. So, now, I can get through a short term situation. Inlet plug on main breaker, 11KW generator, fuel, backup water, and backup food for about 2 weeks. All of us have to start some short term preps, then grow it from there. We actually lost our cell tower 4.5 hrs after power went out. Our whole neighborhood couldn't get cell service. So, now I have a small network of CB operators I stay in touch with. I have battery backup on my base station too. It's amazing how low the RFI noise floor gets when electric goes out.. lol But, if I had whole home solar during that storm, I wouldn't have gotten power from it. There was about a foot of snow/ice on my entire roof. And, it was so overcast I wouldn't be able to get but a small fraction of power needed. But, summer days are a different story. If you are in Texas, pray that SB 330 passes through the house for a vote. It got almost a unanimous vote in the Senate. SB 330 would harden the entire TX grid from solar flare, EMP, and beef up protections for all production plants and substations. Then, hopefully, other states will follow. CPS Energy of San Antonio has already been hardening it's grid, but they also juice several military bases.. makes sense.

I basically zoned my house and purchased a power station for every zone. It gives me redundancy and assurance that I’ll never be completely out of juice. I picked up solar panels here and there. Then I scooped up some repurposed batteries to extend my run time on my most used stations. I hardly ever loose power for more than a couple of hours but I know what can happen if it ever became an extended period. It also gives me the ability to help my family without leaving myself in the dark/

Good advice A couple of years ago we lost power for almost 2 weeks I used a generator but that cost a fortune and to start with all the gas stations were without power I was lucky or had planed ahead I had 30 gal. and used sparingly it lasted 3 days it took the gas stations to reopen you need to plan for the unforeseen this has happened more than ounce i enjoy your videos its just good sense

The Yappers who are uninformed need to use some critical thinking and pay attention because they’re the ones that are gonna be crying in the end if something happens.

I bought a whole house generator roughly 10 years ago, before the silliness started. With all those moving from Democrat states to my area, which used to be vastly majority right leaning, I would be worried during a prolonged outage. I used to live in left learning areas, the mindset of those people are, if you have something everybody else needs, you are obligated to share with them. Those on the right tend to be more self reliant, those on the left believe everything is community property. I fear my house will be over ran with people trying to charge their phones and tablets and such.

I don't worry about my freezers going out in the winter, hell put it outside. Im worried about my freezers going down in the summer. I have $1000`s worth of meat in my freezers. I have backups for my backup.
