@HOBOTECH - hey man... one little tip/suggestion I felt I should share... Something I do quite often when a product has SCREWS where they’re less than convenient & I know I’ll need to remove them often... REPLACE THEM with a screw that has a KNOBBED END or an end that features BOTH a standard driver pattern, AND a swivel D-Ring (commonly seen in photography applications).
Since that door isn’t exactly concealing a large “security risk” and even with children present I highly doubt their “curiosity” will provoke them to undo both screws on such an intimidating machine, I see NO REASON to leave those screws in when you can swap them for a “tool free” alternative.
For anyone besides _Professor Hobooooo_ reading this, if you’re unclear on HOW to find an alternative fastener that has the same dimensions & thread pattern.... Just take one out, measure it’s thread length & diameter, and take note of the thread TYPE. Search for either a “male threaded knob” or “screw with knob head” and etc... you get the point. As long as the LENGTH/DIAMETER/TYPE of thread is a match (AND there’s enough clearance on your equipment to allow for the knob to function properly) you can’t go wrong.
The manufacturer should sincerely consider the fact that PORTABLE GENERATORS are not only for “ideal” overlanding applications and ARE COMMONLY DEPLOYED IN EMERGENCY (UNIDEAL) SITUATIONS such as winter power outages and active rain/snow storms!!!
Fumbling with SCREWS & SCREWDRIVERS during on-the-fly oil changes, maintenance, or troubleshooting during already tumultuous conditions?? NO THANKS..
The solution I’m offering here SHOULD BECOME STANDARD EQUIPMENT or should be added into the package so the end-user can choose which they prefer.
They created a fine piece of machinery that MOST will want to trade in their gasoline generators for which PROMOTES long term usage where impromptu maintenance & troubleshooting WILL ARISE.
Small details like this one are what separate the Hyundai’s from the Bentley’s...
I think HOBO should provide this feedback and let’s see if they send out 2 upgraded screw replacements to anyone who already purchased this. Ya never know!

Great review as always. I've actually had one of these for a month or two, picked it up as a backup / supplemental power solution as we are off grid solar (5kw of panels, 10.5kwh battleborn batteries). Overall I really like the generator and propane is SO much easier to manage than gasoline. I did run into a bit of a limitation folks should know about... I have a 24v battery bank so I use this to run a Victron 24v/12a battery charger to charge my batteries when sun isn't cooperating. This used about 340w and I liked the solution so well that I added a second charger so I could charge 24v/24a for 680w and burn propane faster or just do one at 340w and get a longer run time off a 20lb tank. But I found that both chargers running would overload the generator every time... it turns out the chargers only pull 340w but they do it at 4.7a.... and if I found that the ALP makes out at 7.1a. So 2 chargers wouldn't run... and since 4.7a is well over 1/2 of 7.1a it was pulling a much heavier load than I thought on the little generator. So getting a 40-50hr runtime with one charger wasn't really in the cards... and I found the best I could do was run one charger at 24v/12a and the other charger at 24v/4a (on low setting) So I get 24v/16a charging while pulling around 5.8a / 480w. With this setup I get 23hrs out of a 20lb propane tank. Not bad and it does the job but not as good as Id hoped.
That said... I love the solution for backup power. Its small, light, easy maintenance and since it doesn't have a gas tank you can store these just about anywhere, you can even ship them if needed which you can't typically do with a gas generator. Truck drivers could store one of these in their cab for emergency power. Just don't run it in there. lol. I'm tempted to get a second one.
    A couple other things...
    1. they probably measure noise from 20ft away... most generator specs are from that distance. It does get pretty quiet when your not right up on it.
    2. If the black hose connected to the side of the generator isn't hanging free... if its bound against something or bound upward by a 1lb propane tank... then in time the vibration can work the connection lose and your propane will leak out. Only happened to me once... but getting 6hrs out of a 20lb propane tank wasn't good. lol. Just make sure its hanging free and the connections are hand tight and you won't have any problems.

@@Shane-Singleton I just experienced this during the DEEP FREEZE 2021 here in Coastal Texas. I had one 5 gallon gas can from 12 months prior, and although treated with Seafoam, it was still regular unleaded 87 oct with 5% Ethanol. My other gas cans had Ethanol-Free 92 Octane, and when I fulled my generator with the junk gasoline, there was a marked difference in how the generator ran and even how it sounded. When that tank was near empty, I re-filled with Ethanol-Free and was back to normal. And, I just bought a Dual-Fuel generator and more propane.

After Hurricane Michael hit our area one of my neighbors couldn’t get his 5000 watt generator running so he put it out on the side of the road with all the other trash. I picked it up and then put a Propane/natural gas conversion kit on it a few months later. It runs like a champ on propane tanks. It’ll supplement my gasoline generator quite nicely. The propane generator starts a lot easier than my gasoline one does and it runs a lot smoother, too.

  • @crllovg1
    @crllovg1 3 года назад +71

The main reason this generator is more efficient than a dual fuel is that propane has a significantly higher octane rating that gasoline. The motor can be designed with a higher compression ratio to take advantage of the higher octane. This may partially explain why it’s a little louder than comparable generators. As the professor stated though, propane is less energy dense.
One advantage of propane the professor didn’t address in this video is storage. Propane fuel doesn’t degrade over time and the equipment that runs off propane takes a little less maintenance to put into extended storage since you don’t have fiddle with fuel additives or drain fuel from the carburetor.
The professor is being cautious about the oil drain interval. Stating that he would change it at half the listed hours. On a small motor like this, it’s cheap insurance. My experience (from years ago) with working on propane converted V8’s is that the recommended change interval can be significantly extended because propane burns so much cleaner. We came to that conclusion through oil analysis and real world experience.
    Great review as always Professor!

On the oil change/hours, LPG/Propane is a very clean burning engine, the oil will come out looking almost as clean as new. Very little contaminates and carbon. The cylinders also last longer as the gas is dry and doesn't wash off the oil film in the bore. Here in Aus we had all our taxi industry on LPG and many factory fitted dedicated LPG cars. Not uncommon to get 1m miles from them.
I have had one for 10 years and it is the lowest maintenance engine I have ever owned. (LPG-liquid pretroleum gas.)

It's a hard choice between that and the Baja 900 (Ryobi). I would have preferred to have DC output and a pure sine wave inverter - my Baja has neither. The 15% power increase wouldn't have hurt, either. Still, the Baja is almost half the price and suitable enough for my purposes, which is mainly a backup method to charge my batteries on days solar is insufficient. But the DC output would have made charging more efficient and eliminated the need for a charger, and the pure sine wave would have made it more versatile (such as running A/C or sensitive electronics directly from generator). Great review, gives me something to chew over. 😋

    - that you can generally store propane indefinatly
    - propane is much better for the engine longevity because it burns a lot cleaner and leaves less soot
    - and you dont have to worry about the carb getting gunked up from leaving fuel in there
unleaded has a shelf life, would need fuel stabalizer, and most unleaded is mixed with ethanol which is not good for the longevity of some of the internal components.

I needed it to power and ARB fridge freezer and a small mini freezer and I estimated about 40 hours a tank but I didn't count on the tanks not being completely full and I only averaged about 24 to 34 hours a tank. That makes sense now. I appreciate you weighing it and all the time you took to do the test it was very enlightening . For others people's references, I went through four tanks in nine days. I was running constantly in the beginning days using the small freezer to make ice for the extra cooler. I changed the oil every 24 hours because of the environment I was in. Once I could see I wasn't going to make it to the end of our 12 days, We were able to transfer everything to the ARB and I ran it to power that for about 15 hours day. We ran out 24 hours before ready to leave the island. I'll be better prepared this time and now I know why I need more thanks to your in depth review. Thanks again!

1000 watts? People need to read the labels on their appliances! It tells you what the power consumption is. 600, 1800, 1000, 1800 watts? What does that mean? Power (basically) is Voltage times Amps. 120 volts times 10 amps equals 1200 watts. A typical wall outlet is either 15 or 20 amps. How many times have you tripped one of those? 1000 watts will disappoint most people. On the other hand, it's 1000 watt hours, which may be stored in a battery bank, which a more powerful inverter can provide the surge needed during high demand.

Efficiency standards for home inverters are being biased deliberately to 50% in Europe I thinking higher here operation and there is a huge markup 4 inverter based generators that are able to operate at various RPMs depending upon the load. Obviously this is an inverter generator I have not watched this video yet and the Home Depot one likely is not? In a hybrid powertrain like a scooter or a Toyota Prius he do want to operate the generator at Peak efficiency the small battery is what then Powers the various Lowe's in other words the motor doesn't have to be anywhere near as big as it would normally have to be to get a car moving nor does it have to be Tunes to operate efficiently at various RPMs. Think of it as diesel gate in reverse. The Honda cars are selling for 4 figures each however and that means that for off-grid to use storing low pressure hydrogen in a variety of ways now make sense for overnight use. During the day renewable electricity produces hydrogen and during the night the fuel cell from the prior current generation which can be liberated profitably by converting those Hondas to plug in batteries. the reason those cars are selling so cheaply is because once you use your $15,000 credit you have to buy another one from somebody who has not use their credit because you're buying high pressure hydrogen at the market price. I can't imagine the bargain on one of those Honda fuel cell cars if it has been quotes totaled but again one of those with a modest amount of battery is worth more without the fuel cell and one without the ability to charge the battery from the grid and it is the fuel cell that until recently has been regarded as a million dollars per car. I don't believe in electricity or fuel cells but if you need electricity overnight and sunshine is all you got for that special case you can store it far more hydrogen for almost nothing overnight then you will possibly need with a far easier balance of system cost to stomach. those fuel cells that are in the Honda car are not designed to operate on propane. They do provide a nominal amount of power which is a ton of power for a house. Honda has made the unbelievably stupid decision to sell them instead of lease so somebody is going to make a killing retrofitting them conventional electric cars and selling the fuel cells as discussed above! The real issue for those cars though is to convert them 2 pneumatic operation because you can get about a hundred fifty miles of range and the liquid nitrogen is probably cheaper then the hydrogen it only takes you to 300!

@@Gratefulwon does the engine run at full speed regardless of the load? You do understand that that is not an efficient way of proceeding but apparently common for standard generators ordinarily that absurdity? They obtain the frequency of the sine wave by staying the alternator at that rotational velocity instead of using Electronics so that they can provide only what electricity is needed and adjust the fuel consumption precisely to match that meaning they're operating at something like 20% efficient LOL not .02. Big deal. I am actually in favor of engineering intelligently so I like solutions that get more done with less including for example canceling the detonation in Atlantic City of the rebar and concrete dozens of floors on under 2 acres. Atlantic City can install solid state lighting and produce all of the fresh arugula The Gourmet chefs need or they can park a bunch of cars. It doesn't really seem like a hard choice but we have to completely revamp constitutional compliance for corporate liquidation so that the externalities are not ignored. All of the contribution that all of the electric cars are currently making on the entire planet will take years if ever to undo the damage blowing up he barely 30 year old high rise. The purpose of the Constitutional mandate for bankruptcy is not to transfer World assets into the hands of those who have paid too little and care only about maximizing further damage to the Earth so that they can get a cut on the pittance of the cost apparent to doing so. I'm not interested in how much it cost to push the button I'm far more interested in how much it would cost to leave the concrete and steel up so that we could use it for good instead of evil.

@@Gratefulwon after responding to your prior message I did see weather on edit or in the original as well you mentioned both the one featured here in this video and the one at Home Depot are inverter generators. I also had no idea how much money we are talking about but you're saying that this one is 2/3 more expensive. That is a huge price difference and I know that the market for very small generators is extremely small Ancilla freemium should be expected to be paid but I will be looking at Home Depot and I will be watching this video for those who are not doing either and cannot wait you never said precisely what the wattage of the Home Depot propane only inverter generator is nor did you indicate whether it is truly a Home Depot product available for free ship-to-store or adjusted Advertiser like the Sears Kmart Walmart Target etcetera websites all tend to provide platforms for however amazingly. Since many people talk about thirds capacity of generators I am surprised there are not more hybrid product this is the smallest generator I have seen and it is almost small enough to power a hybrid lightweight road bicycle of the Honda type Powertrain not Toyota

The tool thing is definitely NOT a deal breaker. I have one of those little 2 stroke ”Hitch Hiker” generator and a 2k Predator. Each has its own little tool kit, zip tied to the handle, with a SP wrench, SP, and screw driver and a qt of oil (+a sm bottle of 2 stroke oil for the Hitch Hiker). This way no matter the situation I have what I need for sm repair/maintenance. Each has its own 5 gal jug of fuel with Stabile, and it’s changed out about every 6-8 mos. I’m a prepper. Gotta-be-good-to-go when you gotta go. 😁

That would all depend on which type of solar generator and respective sizes. That would eat up too much of his time. However, from what I see, I think it is perfect for use to charge up SoGens when the sky is cloudy over several days.
