All members of Mechanicus have different amount of their organs replaced with mechanical stuff. Usually the more robotic you are - the more respect you'll have from your fellow mech people. But they also all have a human brain. They believe that artificial intelligence is pure evil, so if they need a robot to do a specific task - they'll stick a human brain in a machine and meddle with it until all it can think and do is that specific task.

1:25:00 I feel like I should mention about this as I used to misunderstand it until someone explained it a bit better. "Innocence proves nothing" doesn't really mean what it sounds like it means. In 40k, the corrupting powers of xenos and chaos can sometimes be very insidious and manipulative. For example, a civilisation may be plagued by a disease, be begging for relief and a cure, and end up unknowingly or unwillingly worshipping the chaos god Nurgle. These people may have done nothing wrong. They would have been oblivious to the dangers of their actions through no fault of their own, only acted to try and save themselves and the ones they love, and be innocent victims of the powers of chaos. However, in such a scenario, the Inquisition knows that although these people are by all means innocent, that doesn't mean they are not guilty of aiding the enemies of the Imperium and need to be destroyed.

    • @OleHerland

    - The Emperor is a hardcore atheist. Prior to his galactic crusade, he purged ALL religions on Earth.
    - A thing that Bricky doesn't mention was that humanity was already advanced and spacefaring prior to the Emperor's emergence. And then, they had an AI uprising which the humans won but left them utterly devastated. Since then, all forms of AI are completely outlawed. In the case of the Imperium, it is one of the highest forms of heresy. So if you can't use AI, what do they use?
    Servitors.
What are servitors, you may ask? They are slaves (usually criminals, sometimes they're not) that have been lobotomized, dismembered, and reassembled with cybernetic "enhancements" to serve the Imperium. There will be times that they will be found mumbling or repeating words, as if trying to remember their past selves.
    - Lasguns are definitely the weakest, until you have 1000 of them firing at you.
    - Guardsmen are known to have a 90% mortality rate on their first deployment. Most of them die due to combat and some die because they were used as "motivation" to "improve" morale. Cadia was destroyed after some asshole threw a moon-sized space station at the planet. So, most Cadians will often say "Cadia still stands!", "Cadia lives!", or "The planet broke before the Guard did." as copium.
    - Do you know what the Mechanicus consider heretical, besides AI? Inventing or developing new things.
Like the Imperium, they degraded hard. None of them know or understand how their tech works anymore and require Gothic Binary chanting through their bible/sacred texts (which basically is just an instruction manual and what their chanting is just the words "Press the ON button").
To clarify, the Omnissiah and the Machine Spirit are two totally different things. The Omnissiah is basically their Jesus, and they refer to the Emperor as such.
    - Not only do they kill anyone near demons, the Grey Knights also kill people who have seen them...even at a glance.
    - Adeptus Custodes. The faction that Henry Cavill mains as.
3 Space Marines are too small. Try like 10, and they'll still win with pure dominance.
    - Psykers are usually the targets for the Culexus assassins because they can bypass their abilities, almost rendering them invisible to their senses. There was also a story where a normal guardsman saw one (that had their power amplified a bit), took out his gun and shot himself.
    - If you get spotted by an Inquisitor, you are essentially dead. If you are guilty, you will die. If you are innocent, you will be killed anyway because you wasted their time.
    - For Exterminatus, it can range from saturation bombardment, nuking the planet, virus bombing, planet core cracking (essentially a giant laser boring straight down to the core), etc.
It is always meant to be a last resort, nothing more...except if you're Kryptman.
Fidus Kryptman was an Inquisitor who was responsible for nuking so many Imperium planets to prevent them from being invaded by space bugs (Tyranids). He essentially overdid the thing, leading to the Imperium kicking him out and branding him as a traitor. He is one of the main causes why there are so many xenos-related exterminatus memes.

Hey, been in the hobby since 94, and I'll do my best to fill in a few things and answer some of your questions.
This is probably going to be a long post.
With the idea that 'everyone is some flavour of evil'... It's a good example of the idea that it's all based upon perspective... Each faction/race in 40k looks at themselves as being 'the good guy'. So in that idea, everyone else is 'the bad guy'.
Space Marines have a neurological link to their armour, combined with the strength of the marine and the mechanics of the armour gives them the ability to move faster then they appear to be able to.
For the Adeptus Mechanicus, they will replace what they are able to... But no AI. In 40k, AI stands for Abominable Intelligence, as since the times of the 'Dark Age of Technology', every AI that has been turned on will turn against humanity in less than a second. So all AI is banned.
The Sisters of battle were formed by the Imperial Church because of a law that said they could not have a even a single man as a fighting force... So they made one with women to step around the law.
The Adeptus Custodes are the oldest organisation of the Imperium, created by the Emperor himself before he unified humanity and formed the Imperium.
They surved a number of roles, but the main 2 functions of the Custodes were to guard the Emperor, and to be his companions. To talk to him as equals, and offer him council.
Currently the Custodes only guard the Imperial Palace on Terra (Earth) with a few very rare exceptions.
Partly because they are so few, with the number of Custodes only allowed to number no more that 10,000 at any one time. This limit was placed on them as a rule by the Emperor himself.
The Vindicare assassin's rifle has a lot of computer aided readouts that relay information about the weather, gravity, and other factors that influence the path of the bullet, this doesn't mean that they can't shoot without these systems, it just adds to the level of training they go through.
With the Eversor assassins, they have a small bomb implanted into their body... So if the Eversor is killed or seriously wounded... It explodes and it reacts with all the chemicals in the blood of the Eversor to make the explosion bigger that the bomb could do on its own.
With the idea of the line 'Innocence Proves Nothing', it's more along the lines of 'your guilty of something... Maybe not what we originally thought you might have been, but we will find out what you are guilty of'.
And Inquisitiors are answerable to other Inquisitiors. And there is a council of high Inquisitiors that are elected officials, and all of the other Inquisitiors are able to vote in this matter.
At the end of the day, there are many who just collect the miniatures and don't play the table top games. You can enjoy the hobby as you want to.

Space Marines are so interesting and I'm getting so exited about the concept of them. I reacted to "The Armoring Of A Space Marine" and it was epic. Also I've read some comments about all their extra organs 👀
It's so interesting with the AI hate, and it's insanely relevant to today climate. AI is getting more and more advanced in the real world, and it's actually starting to have an impact into peoples lives already. Maybe the 40k universe is on to something!
Kinda funny that The Sisters of battle is formed to get around the law. Laws are made to get around I guess 😂
Wow, The Adeptus Custodes got even cooler with one of their functions being talking to the Emperor as an equal (before he became...that). And a hard limit on 10 000 makes them even more interesting. Bad ass!
The extra information about the assassin's where also wild! 😱
Thank you for taking the time to help me understand the universe better. And, just saying that it's ok to enjoy the hobby as you want to. He would ask crowds of people if they agreed with his methods. Those who spoke up would be shot dead on the spot regardless of gender or age.
He turned the "Schola Imperium" which is a School for Orphans whose parents died in service to the imperium into a legalized slave trade operation. Any especially strong boys or beautiful girls he would have sold to the highest bidder.
He would visit planets WITHOUT NOTICE and if there was not a parade waiting for him including food, drink and especially women, he would perform Exterminatus on the planet. Just wipe it out without allowing any protest or excuse because they did not have a parade prepared should he arrive unannounced.
Eventually a civil war started against him with him besieged on Holy Terra (Earth) itself where he could potentially last for decades.
So the leader of the Custodes traveled to the leader of the Sisters of Battle and left some of his men hostage in exchange for her following him to the Emperor's throne room itself, where they did... something. What happened is only known to the two of them and possibly the Emperor. But when she emerged her previously dark hair was now white as a crayon and she was capital-P Pissed.

1:10:00 Someone may have answered this, but I'll answer it anyway. Short answer: yes, there are lots of layers.
The slightly longer answer is that the Imperium of Man is actually incredibly diverse in its capabilities and its politics. The Imperium has over a million worlds in its domain, all at different distances from Terra (Earth). Many of these planets will have a specific role or resource to provide to the Imperium as a whole. You'll get forge worlds mass manufacturing weapons and machines; feudal worlds where daily life for its populace is just peasantry and farming to feed the galaxy; sometimes they'll just serve as fortress planet in a strategic position or they'll be there to just mass produce and mass train soldiers. Some will be clustered together and form a local system and network of planets, some will be isolated and have to mostly fend for themselves. When there are wars happening throughout the galaxy some planets will get invaded, others will be cut off, others will take on a whole new purpose. Cries for help and reinforcements can sometimes be heard quickly but it can also often take years, decades, or even hundreds of years before reinforcements arrive. This means the Imperium might land on a world expecting to find a normal planet but it could be overrun be xenos, completely deserted, or it might have been reduced to a medieval society after the total collapse of their planet. With so many worlds, it's technically possible for a civilisation on a planet to be as advanced as the Egyptians, as the rest of the Imperium, or anything in between. It's a fun fan idea that our planet might just be a world lost to the Imperium, and that any day we could see battleships descending from the sky and space marines fighting through our streets to ensure our compliance in returning into the fold of the Imperium. The beauty of 40k is if you have an interesting or cool idea for a political system, culture, or conflict in this universe, it's probably plausible that it could exist.

If you're really interested in 40k I cannot recommend "Gaunt's Ghosts" and "The Infinite and The Divine" enough! Gaunt's Ghosts is a series of books and every single one of them is PHENOMENAL! The first one is called "First and Only" and it's both an amazing novel and a really good introduction into Imperium- not just army and war and such, but also everyday life in it.
The Infinite and The Divine is a single book and it follows two aliens (Trazyn the Infinite and Orican the Diviner) and it's fantastic!
It's a mix of dark comedy, a heist novel, a bit of buddy cop, and good bit of high stakes action all in one and it's one of the best 40k books out there!

@@OleHerland well, the double-headed eagle definitely has strong nazi implications these days, but eagles in general have been associated with empires ever since the reign of Rome, and specifically double-headed eagles have been symbols of empire and sovereignty since the rule of Constantinople (the Austrio-Hungarian Empire used a double headed eagle, and the USA even now uses the bald eagle as its symbol, not to mention all the others myriad examples across european history). The double-headed eagle specifically symbolised dominion over both east and west, traditionally - in 40k, the Imperial Aquilla has one eye closed and one open - blinded to the past and open to the future, or fixed upon the past and blind to the future, depending on interpretation. Also, you will notice that one side of the Aquilla looks more mechanical than the other - this symbolizes the union of the Imperium with the Adpetus Mechanicus, which is technically an autonomous client-state to the Imperium as per the terms of the Treaty of Mars, signed by the Emperor Himself back in the founding of the empire.

Psykers for clarification are more so channeling the Warp which is the collective mental soup of all human emotions and souls to reshape reality. Create bolts of lightning where there was none, launch blasts of fire by making the air into nitrogen etc...
Psykers are useful but very dangerous because the Warp is heavily infested with Chaos. So if you channel too much you'll start channeling Chaos, which isn't very healthy, so a Psyker who loses control might quite literally implode and create a rift into the warp which is always going to have Daemons and other Warp monstrosities crawling through them.
So in the Guard if your fellow soldiers get even the slightest suspicion that you the Psyker might be losing control they're going to shoot you in the head rather than take the risk.

So something to note, that I’m sure people already have said: the emperor (sometimes known as Big E) destroyed ALL religion when he rose to power. He believed that the only way we as a people could be unified is if we pushed ourselves towards a single belief…supremacy of the stars. That’s why we now colonize 1,000,000 worlds. When the Horus heresy made him unable to do much at all, the Ecclesiarchy made up a bunch of lies to convince the imperium that the emperor was a deity worth honoring. This vision of the future was what the chaos gods showed Horus, which convinced him to perform his coup. Big E essentially lied to his sons about a bunch of crap, and in anger half of them sought to remake the imperium in their vision of its future instead of the corrupt future we got.

Unless an operation has been clearly planned and laid out, you often get a bunch of groups with their own objectives, and the need for battlefield commanders to compromise and petition their own allies for help.

So things that aren't war are rarely covered - people that say that's all that exists have clearly not read enough. There are worlds that have gone for hundreds perhaps a thousand years without a major rebellion or war - some of them even are nice (called "Imperial Worlds" as compared with "Hive Worlds" covered in ecology ruining cities, or "Death Worlds" where the ecology is so dangerous basically all they export is the terrifying people who deal with it). They have places that have gone without war for longer than any point in human history on Earth, some are even noble republics, or have legal rights for their citizens (unless they piss off the inquisition). They probably do have to muster a regiment of imperial guard once a generation of millions of soldiers - that likely won't come back - that's the cost for their peace, and probably a lot of the things they make are for export or Tithe to the imperium. There are after all a million worlds in the imperium. There are politics and Nobility and lots of other stuff (recommend the Eisenhorn Trilogy as a good intro to this) one important thing I'd note is even though there are probably genius' lost in the crunch that don't make it, and there is a degree of corrupt nepotism in some safer jobs the ruthless politics, death, assassination, and needs of management also means that despite the massive gaps in their awareness and inefficiencies of the staggering bureaucracy and the ignorance of dogma frequently the people in positions of power- especially higher up ones are actually some of the best for the job because they survived the brutal meritocracy to make it there and have lived a thousand years doing so. And even though they treat people like statistics and are ruthless pragmatists they may be some with the only mindsets a human can possess to just not make things worse and try to cope with the infinite problems before them. Some might be great even compared with Primarchs like Lord Solar Macharius (basically Alexander the Great), others like members of the inquisition radically disagree about what is good for the imperium, but any organization that can maintain 70% of it's members as insanely capable and devoted people working for the betterment of mankind (even when using demons to do it) is worth not dismissing as zealous dangers, and if any are a genuine danger or are just perceived as one unlike with regular cops they will get together and kill them. Even though they only "answer to the Emperor and themselves" 'themselves' is a genuine threat to each other.
The good parts are until recent history when basically everyone is at risk again, but plenty of the lore is in the 41st millenium where that was true.
The big feature of war is that we don't focus on those places because there' probably 20,000 major wars going on literally all the time, not mentioning rebellions, cults, or other subversive danger. I'd recommend the Templin Institute videos on Warhammer 40k as good introductions to the vibe and overview but most lore videos don't discuss the places where that isn't true. There have also been videos that talk about how endless war is unrealistic or unsustainable - and if it was the way people talk about it it probably would be. But when you have a million world's with only 150,000 on the front line at any given time it's possible (to be clear the front lines are like everywhere there aren't hard borders the imperium is more like the pepperonis on pizza than a clearly defined line).
Also lots of other things we assume to be inevitable in the future aren't really around in this setting - and you could just go along with that but I think it's better for your imagination to assume because of the nature of how the Warp and Chaos has become more active over time eventually exploding with the birth of Slaanesh our expectations for what the most useful or valuable things would be (like AI or automated drones or living in space) are now wrong. Best example is the Adeptus Mechanicus don't innovate, now what if the fact that the entire Mechanicus and Imperial Guard have been worshiping and revering this model of Lasgun for 5000 years means it doesn't jam when they are fighting chaos because they have empowered it's platonic form in the Warp with the defense of belief. Even if they design a gun with other tech that should be better on paper - it just isn't unless it's insanely pseudomagically better. Same with genetic modification or cybernetics - only the holy time tested revered shit works.

The piece of wargear (weaponry) he uses is the Black Blade of Antwyr, found in a temple dedicated to a dark and heretical god. Even though brothers of the Purifier order are allowed to speak with the Castellan, they are only allowed to briefly, because the blade temps those who are within its aura, which is similar to a tear or scar in reality. imperial knights are the nobles of terra and mars (mostly mars), to be a knight you have to posses the ability to control the walker without it frying your brains (that is a special skill you get at birth).
they are mostly a part of the collegia titanica of mars (or titan legion as it is called), a faction that bricky forgot to mention.
the meccas are owned by the cult mechanicus (the robotic priest guys), and they come in different sizes as fallowes:
--- the 10 meter class or knight that you see in this video.
--- the 20 meter class called the warhound scout titan (fast and versatile, not that strong in a battle).
---- the 30 meter class called a reaver titan (quite rare these days because the cult mechanicus lost the blueprints for them).
---- the 50 meter class called the warlord titan (quite common and mostly used in battle).
the 100 meter class called the imperator (or the walking cathedral because of the temple on his back), very rare to see this type of titan due to the fact that it requires 10k people to operate and a very rare type of noble called a princeps (or principalis).
hope this helps you understand more... so sad that bricky forgot about the titan legion (they are a main force in the empire, one of the only reason why the empirium is still a force not to be messed with).

The Knight Houses and the Collegia Titanica are separate entities. Indeed, the Questor Imperialis have remarkably little to do with the Mechanicus. (And, in many ways, the Titan Legions are beyond the authority of the mortals that comprise the Adeptus Mechanicus).
      Basically:
      * the Questor Imperialis owe their allegiance to the Imperium (and rule individual planets), and utilise single operator mechs.
      * the Questor Mechanicum owe their allegiance to the Mechanicus (de facto ruling planets, but as vassals to specific forge worlds), and likewise utilise single operator mechs.
      * the Collegia Titanica pay lip service to the Mechanicus, and use multi operator mechs.

The great thing about 40k is the sheer variety in the universe. For instance, there's a lot of Space Marine Chapters who would think nothing of sacrificing millions of people in order to achieve their objective, but there's also chapters like the Salamanders, Space Wolves and Lamenters who would and have sacrificed themselves without a second thought to protect the people.

    THE NIHILIS PATTERN LASGUN
The Nihilis pattern lasgun is made on the planet of necromunda , the Nihilis lasgun is a pattern of lasgun famed all across the galaxy for its reliability and dependability, in which its reliability in killing its operator makes it one of the most hazardous firearms in the entire imperium in which it has a higher user mortality of that even managing surpass the survival rate of that of the humbled plasma gunners and in its regards for dependability in terms of its impracticality, in which the weapon lacks any bayonet attachments and was incredibly unreliable even for lasgun standards, the Nihilis pattern lasgun is also famed across the imperium for its unique and again hazardous qualities in which the guardsman or guardswoman would suffer a sever case of hair loss, cancer but most common cases was users death in which 99.999% of the time most users if not all users would unexpectedly die if exposed for prolonged periods of time with the Nihilis pattern lasgun, however due to a miscommunication error with the departmento munitorum the munitorum accidentally ordered as well as handing them to several entire guard regiment, in which by the time the error was realized unfortunately resulted in the loss of half an entire regiment, later notes has been added that any soldier issued with a Nihilis pattern lasgun should return their weapon 2-3 months later at the closest supply depot in order to be reassigned a new lasgun, in which time 2-3 months the user will unfortunately have to suffer with the listed ailments as mentioned earlier but for those who might have skipped or forgotten, possible side effects include
    Death
    Hair loss
    Cancer
    Rickets
And death just for good measure, however as a sign of forgiveness and penitence, the house of vaan Saar has reissued any regiments or individuals with the Nihilis pattern lasgun with all new plasma guns in which the selector switch has be bolted down to the overcharge setting.

This is the wiki for the Nihilis pattern lasgun
Produced by House Van Saar in the hive city of Necromunda, several of these lasguns were recalled due to logistics errors. Lasguns issued between M35 and M40, with serial numbers 00001475 through 72341110 were recalled as they were originally intended for personal use, but issued to the Astra Militarium by mistake. Issues with these lasguns made them operate outside of normal combat parameters. These included: Above-average Combat Efficacy, Temperamental Machine Spirit, No Bayonet Attachment Point, Unexpected Operator Hair Loss, and Unexpected Operator Death.
Soldiers issued these lasguns were instructed to return these weapons to the regimental quartermaster. Replacements were expected to be issued in 2-3 months depending on distance from nearest forge world and warp-time dilation on delivery vessels. As an apology for the mistake, regiments issued the faulty lasguns were issued almost-new condition Plasma Guns that were permanently locked to the overcharge setting.[41]
Like much of Van Saar technology, these lasguns bathe radiation upon their wielder, slowly killing them

The galaxy pattern lasgun has a 1000 capacity magazine with a life expectancy of up to 10,000 rounds and as bricky mentioned the lasgun is a highly destructive weapon, in which it’s highly effective against soft skinned or mostly organic targets, such as humans, being a thermal energy based weapon the lasgun can produce a serious amount of heat and again as bricky mentioned is highly reliable and extremely simplistic in which case it would be akin to give every modern day soldier the equivalent of say a fifty cal sniper rifle with a thousand round magazine capacity with the simplicity of a lightbulb, granted more complex and simpler versions of the lasgun can be produced depending on the technology of the world it is produced on, not only that but a lasgun is a soldier’s blessing, in which power packs/ magazines can be recharged whilst in the field either via a chimera charging station or designated charging points, meaning that a guard mechanized unit has virtually unlimited ammunition as long as there’s sufficient power to recharge the power packs, however in a pinch leaving the power packs in the sun can also slowly recharge the pack, or alternatively throwing the thing into a fire can also achieve the same results however at the cost of the powerpacks lifespan is considerably shortened as well as has a higher chance to explode. Outside of the occasional cleaning and ritual to appease the weapons machine spirit (AI) the gun can be deemed ready for action, all the while the focusing lenses or barrel must be replaced regularly after 10,000 rounds via a tech priest, but the gun can fire an additional thousand rounds in a pinch but would cause significant damage to the weapon itself of left unchecked, other advantages include access to different types of power packs, each possessing unique abilities and characteristics, such as the standard type four which has the regular thousand rounds, type one allows the user to fire a much more powerful shot but at the cost of weapon damage, type two gives the gun more ammunition over the standard style four, type three increases the power output twice as that of the type one but has less that a few shots available and is mostly given to snipers, type three gives of a much weaker shot but gives the users a much larger ammunition pool, unlike the type two which just gives you a few extra shots, they don’t last long, and that’s about it.
    Other lasgun variants include
Longlas which are marksman designated rifles and are give extra punch as well as an optic for added range
A hotshot lasgun is a beefier and more powerful version of the standard lasgun which requires a power backpack rather than a power pack and does twice the amount of damage the standard lasgun does but they tend to be more complex and harder to produce thus are mostly given to shock troopers or veterans as they will need the added punch.
The hotshot volley gun is a double barreled lasgun in which it operates the same as a lasgun but has twice the rate of fire, ideal for hoards or heavily armored targets in which digging into the armor is the only viable option.
Helguns are far far more powerful than even a hotshot lasgun and are only given to say inquisititorial stormtroopers or those of extremely high positions of authority in which regardless of the enemy, you want to put down in a single shot and is even capable of damaging tanks,
Finally whilst not entirely a lasgun but other laser weapons include
The multi laser which is just a laser LMG which is commonly fitted on chimeras or heavy weapon mounts and are useful in clearing out lightly if barely armored opponents.
The big brother of the lasgun is the lascannon in which it’s basically just a massive laser cannon which is either mounted to tanks or heavy weapons supports like a tripod and are used to dealing with enemy vehicles or heavily armored targets and are also used and carried around by space marine devastators

45:54 few things that Bricky forgot to mention about the Adeptus Mechanicus.
The machine god of the AM is actually called the Deus Mechanicus. The Omnissiah is the physical manifestation of the Machine God; which the AM believe the Emperor of Mankind is. He’s basically seen as like a prophet to them.
Also the reason the AM are allowed to worship the Machine God extends beyond the Imperium’s reliance on them for weapons (though that is still a HUGE part of it). It goes back to the time of the Emperor himself. Back when he was beginning his great crusade he made a pact with the Adeptus Mechanicus, in order to enlist their services in his conquest of the galaxy.

The Chaos Knights as well, but in most cases the Chaos Knight pilots merge with the machine physically while the Imperial Knight pilots only do so mentally. And the Eversor assassins usually explode when they can’t be recovered. The chemical cocktail in their blood allows this and they can actually activate it themselves, through mental commands.

fun fact: those ironstriders aren't just big walkers, they are perpetual motion machines. The Magos who designed it was ridiculed and ostracized by his peers and after he died the secrets to its designs died with him. The current Mechanicus are terrified that they cannot get the machines to start again so instead of powering them down they just leave the Ironstriders running on treadmills until they are needed, then a skitarii tries to drop onto its back and wrangle it into service.

What made the USSR unique in WW2 was their willingness to endure catastrophic casualties that no other country could or would have endured. Conservative estimates have the USSR casualty rate at 50 TIMES higher than the US.
