  • Belarusian Victoria Azarenka was booed off the court at Wimbledon after losing to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, and not shaking hands at the net.
Azarenka then explained in her press conference that she was just respecting Elina Svitolina's position - to not shake hands with Russian or Belaruisan players.
Svitolina had made this clear before the match, and has not shaken hands with Russian or Belarusian players since the war in Ukraine started.

Sabalenka was criticized at the French Open because she waited at the net for Svitolina’s handshake and "should have known better." Now Azarenka is booed at Wimbledon because she "knew better" and chose not to shake Svitolina’s hand. Like wtf?

About ten years ago all newspapers were warning the world of the rise of Neo-Fascism in Ukraine. This country has a history of collaborating with the Nazi during WWII and of sending Jews to the gas chamber. When in 2014 John MacCain went to Kiev to congratulated Ukrainians for their Maidan revolt (watch Oliver Stone's Ukraine in Flame to see the crimes committed by the Neo-fascists revolutionary) he shared the stage with the leader of the Neo-Fascist party. For years now Ukrainian extremists have been attacking and harassing and killing Russians who lived in the disputed areas of the country. This was why Putin went in, to protect Russians ethnics. There are other issues with that part of the world, but the fact is both Svitolina and Kostiuk are hypocritical or ignorant, and they have zero credibility in front of those who know the facts.

And if that was just handshake that is a small issue but much bigger one is that by VILIFYING Belarussian player Svitolina (and other Ukrainian players) PLAY TO THE CROWD. Effectively organizing a mob that was booing their opponents and supporting them. And that is very dishonorable lack of sportsmanship. And it was for Svitolina - in her post match interview on court - to address the crowd and ask them from to refrain from booing on her behalf. She did no such thing. If everyone didn't shake hands with people their countries don't get along then how can we create harmony and unity in the world? If we won't speak to our enemies then how can we become friends? Tennis players are not the reason for the war. It's a gesture that doesn't lead to creating a better atmosphere amongst players or solving the crisis that is the war. Putin isn't going to end the war because Svitolina isn't shaking hands with fellow players. The WTA is wrong on allowing this behaviour on tour.

But the United States and Great Britain did not annex part of Iraq to their territories, did not impose the Russian language by force and did not organize a network of filtration camps, where they weeded out people who supported their language and culture. And Saddam Hussein was the same imperialist as Putin, which he proved in 1991 by capturing Kuwait, after which the United States and allies (including many Arab countries) participated against Iraq in the Gulf War for the liberation of Kuwait. In 2003, it was decided to finally end his dictatorial regime, which really prevented international commissions from monitoring the Iraqi nuclear program and the potential development of chemical weapons, although this was exaggerated, it was also not a complete lie. As for the civilians of Russia, they are also responsible for the actions of their government, because they chose it, or simply allowed the dictatorship. Most Russians support Putin's anti-Ukrainian policies, and many Russian sportsmen refrain from criticizing their government, thus giving their tacit consent. The same applies to many Belarusians who have been living under Lukashenka's regime for 30 years already, who are aiding Russian imperialism and killing the Belarusian language, gradually replacing it with Russian. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Of course, you say "but they have a family" in Russia. That's just the money that they earn in professional tennis is enough to bring the whole family out before the change of regime in Russia and support it on an ongoing basis. This is especially true of popular athletes like Azarenka, Sobolenko, Medvedev, Rublev and others. At the same time, even if this is not done, it is unlikely that something bad will happen to the families of athletes opposed to Putin's power.

In most cases, to be a Russian or Belarusian athlete, you have to have at least some connections to the people in charge, because otherwise it's hard to get any sponsors. Russian professional athletes are also military personnel, they are soldiers with proper ranks and their salary is paid by the defense ministry. This is fairly common in post-communistic countries, because there was no private sector and there was no other way how to finance athletes.
Azarenka is against the war, but a long time supporter of the last European dictator Lukashenko. She is one of many prominent faces of the Belarusian totalitarian regime.
So no, there was not and is not anything childish about Elina's behavior. Vic's might not be giving military orders, but she is definitely receiving them and actively supporting the regime.
