I enjoy watching these videos, growing up in Iowa, USA on the farm. I asked my 96 yr old mother about our cows being lame. She said we never had any lame cows or cattle. Daddy was a great animal well-being Steward of farm animals. We had good black soil and lush green fields for grazing and good sturdy 1-2" gravel in the cattle yard into the barn. Thank you for sharing and taking good care of what God has given us.
I grew up in Iowa as well. We did have a cow that had a nail in her foot. She was limping on that foot and had the vet come out and look at it. He pulled the nail and drained puss from the foot. She was a good milker and it was worth the expense.
1:06 oh man, the first doctor I see cleaning the cow foot before starting work...thanks, what a relief...😁 I've seen a lot of videos about this and I was intrigued why doctors don't clean the hull first...
I've got to ask, why didn't you trim around the nail hole? The nail had obviously gone deep enough to impact the corium because you had blood weeping from the wound. Failure to open that area up (at least a circular exposure) allows whatever bacteria are around to remain in the wound, and prevents any prophylactic intervention. If you don't have to deal with any dermatitis or potentially an abscess down the road I'll be surprised.
If there was a silver lining, apart from the fact she had you to treat her, was that being a roofing nail, the washer probably prevented the nail getting pushed in even further than it was. Glad she'll be happier now you've treated her.
Thank you for washing that hoof off before you expose the wound to bacteria. I know it’s not disinfected. I know bacteria can still get in. But I also know it shows a great deal of respect for the animals that you don’t grind manure into their wounds. It’s one reason I subscribe to your channel.

Did you or do you ever squirt some iodine in the puncture to assure no bacteria? What are chances of this getting infected/causing abcess, etc., as it did bleed?
@@kbeau9538 The hole didn't disappear, because he couldn't have trimmed off that much hoof sole. There is still a hole - and I was surprised that he didn't "scoop" it out a bit - couldn't go all the way, of course, but a little - and then sprayed with idodine. But I wasn't there, with me own eyeballs on that hoof... 👀

Oh *ouch!* I remember as a kid walking up some stairs in flip-flops and just about got a tack stuck in my big toe! I'm amazed that poor cow was still able to walk on that!
Curiosity question. I’ve seen other trimmers open up a puncture to be sure slurry has a way to drain and doesn’t get packed in. How do you determine when to do that and when to not?
Just based on the laws of physics , a hole that small there will be an air bubble inside, or it will fill with dried blood. So mud will likely not be thin enough to be force up into a hole that small. Picture it like a straw. If you block the top end of a straw and try to push the bottom end into water no water will go up into the straw. Part of it is also the fact theres no funnel shape to the hole that would cause a mass of mud to develop that could be compacted and forced up into the hole over time. So it depends how big the hole is and whether the end is completely flat. Putting the block on also reduces the chance of anything being able to be forced up in the hole.
I don’t understand if they’re working with nails on the roof aren’t they required to go around with a magnet to collect all of the trash. Because when I had my roof replaced they had this huge magnet that they dragged around 20 feet out in all directions from my house.
