    Great vid. One additional step at the beginning is making sure you are in first gear. If not, you need to use the front brake to hold the bike and right foot to balance so you can change gears before you switch feet and start the bike.

      well that might work on not so steep hill and packed dirt (and good tyre) and a dirt bike. on big heavy adventure bike I wouldn't trust that front brake one bit ! there is zero weight in the front, it's gonna slide. if you are not in first gear, you are basically screwed. Really I'd love to see how the front tyre is going to hold you on hills more than 10 degrees.

      U can reverse the bike little bit back and take it right and u lean it right ,in this way u put ur right foot on the floor and u can change gear in the left foot .im speaking out of imagination i rode bike only few times in my life and never off road
      Mabe im wrong

    • @kovrcek
      @kovrcek 4 месяца назад +1

      @@User69390 yeah that might work if the trail is wide enough together with the front brake. but then you have to get the bike facing uphill again. what I would do is to just use hand to shift it to first, clutching with right hand (or I carry on handlebars a piece of velcro so I'd use this). right foot holding rear brake, left on the ground. easy :)

    Engaging the friction zone and delivering just enough power to the rear wheel to be able to pull away as smooth as Dusty demonstrated takes a lot of practice 👍🏻.
    Well worth the time and effort 👏🏻👏🏻
    I see many riders get into trouble on re-starts like this because they haven’t practiced this skill, they just whisky throttle it and send a shower of rocks down the hill. 😅 If they are lucky they make it to the top, frequently they end up losing traction and tipping over as they try to remount.

    The advise to check the evenness of the gradient and if the right foot is farther away from thr ground is very important. Been in the same situation before

    "Just make sure you are 100% committed to the restart" is the challenging part, that leap of faith! Restarts on moderate grades aren't so bad, but on really steep inclines they take a lot of courage. Unfortunately, it's really only on super steep grades that I sometimes don't give the bike enough throttle in the first place, for fear of launching airborne at the top :-)

    This situation is my number one cause of dropping the bike². An obstacle like extra loose rocks or a water dam¹ causes me to stall the bike, the front brake doesn't hold it, both my feet need to go to the ground or out for balance, and before i can think of using the motor for rear traction, I'm going over. And this is just my ride home, when a steep section is loose because of dryness or a downpour.
    Why getting standing on the pegs so quickly? As a tall rider with more difficulty keeping the throttle smooth when standing, i like to slide forward and keep lower.
    ¹ speed bump to redirect water coming down the hill
    ² I'm very happy to have watched your recovery video, I've practiced it quite a few times

    The mototrek videos are great, I’m learning a ton! In this video, you said don’t let the clutch out all the way until the top. So we should be using the clutch for speed control?

    Had to apply this last weekend when I took a STEEP, RUTTED inside line in a turn. It threw me from the bike (almost slow motion step off) but got to apply a bit of "recovery" to get out of the ruts and I did an uphill re-start and applied exactly what Dusty instructed here....not only were my riding mates impressed that I lifted the bike from the steep side, but that I "self-rescued" the whole situation unassisted. BOOM!

    I'd have to use the front brake for staying still if RHS kickstart- and on my LHS kickstart motorcycles which directly actuate through the clutch, neutral and clutch lever released is required.

    Interesting. Looking forward to practicing this one.
    If I may suggest, I recommend you edit the pieces in the order they occur in time.
    - Getting stopped and stabilized
    - Ground and hill quality check
    - recover or climb decision
    - restart
    Etc

    That rear brake on a hill/in the Alps is so important. Because the front brake will not hold your and the bike's weight, the front tyre skipping backwards and you desperately trying to apply more brake pressure which will change - nothing. Guess why I know ;-) Cheers from Nürnberg, Günter

    Wonder how many folks have done this with a car with manual transmission on a hill?
    That technique is holding the handbrake until you feel the chassis shift then release and you’re moving.
    It comes naturally after trying a few times. 😅

    I just don’t get in what scenario that if you couldn’t make it up a hill with momentum and traction you’d still be able to start from a dead stop mid Hill and climb it🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @mikefyten7761
      @mikefyten7761 6 месяцев назад

      I see this a lot...the rider, due to fear or other things, doesn't lose traction but losses momentum. They stall, which is different from losing traction. Maybe they were in the wrong gear, maybe not on the throttle quite enough. It's very possible to have the available traction to get up the hill.

    • @MOTOTREK
      @MOTOTREK  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah - sometimes a rider will start the hill in a too-high gear, feel apprehensive about adding throttle and then stall.
