This video brings back so many memories of my own caving trips in college. The tight spaces were uncomfortable, but being small and flexible, it was fun to navigate the infinite underground mazes. Sometimes the tunnels would open up into massive rooms with the most beautiful formations you have ever seen. And there were waterfalls that you could climb and mini canyons where there was no floor. It was amazing. But vertical caving is a whole other story. I may not be claustrophobic, but I do have a fear of heights.

I was once trapped underground when I was 15 for nearly an hour. I had to be dug out. When compared to this, what I went through is nothing. But given the level of fear I felt during that experience I couldn’t possibly imagine ever going somewhere like this. As amazing as it looks and must feel to experience, I just could never put myself through that. I can safely say from experience I can cope with alot, but this is too much for me.

I crawled under my bed when I was probably 5 years old, 8-10” height? Got under but my head got wedged on the center support. I screamed in pure fear because I couldn’t move. My mother came to the rescue yelling oh god what did you do? She grabbed the mattress and lifted but the box spring and frame didn’t budge. She looked at me and told me to drop my arm and lay my head flat while she pulled my legs - viola I was out w/ some good thinking. Watching these video’s brings back this bad memory.

I'm not claustrophobic, but this video left me with nothing but pure wonder😱. Caving is completely different from other sports, and I was reminded that being short and having a small physique is an explorer's greatest strength. In addition, explorers will be required to have a high degree of flexibility, stamina, and an unyielding fighting spirit to ensure they return alive. In any case, I have nothing but pure admiration and respect for them as this is an area that I would never physically be able to do.

Yeah man humans naturally are "claustrophobic" because we originated in the savannah. The people who go into uncharted caves unknowing of what could happen to them are BRAINLESS. Send in some small camera-fitted robot to very slowly explore or something.

I absolutely love caves and I often look for them during my hikes, I even explore them a bit if they are accessible enough (I always have several headlights with me, and mainly for that purpose). But I know I would absolutely never do this.
Aside from finding it scary and potentially dangerous, it goes completely against what I look for in a cave : a quiet, peaceful place.
Just like with hiking, I think it is important to know when to say STOP, and not go anywhere you are not entirely confident, even if you are only a few metres/feet from your goal.

    • @jp1135
