It's going to be extremely, *extremely* important for the aftermarket to start working on Tesla support, especially in terms of scan tools and service software. You _cannot_ work on any modern car, EV or otherwise, without a scan tool. Even brake jobs often require scan tools now. Right now, the only real diagnostic software option for Tesla is Tesla Toolbox. Given their history, we already know that they are not going to continue to support their older vehicles indefinitely, so if they drop or reduce software support for their older cars, the owners of those cars are going to be totally screwed. I'm less concerned about legacy manufacturers because the vast majority of them still fully support diagnostic software, even for their models back to the 90s, but Tesla does not really support the original Roadster and is already phasing out support for the early Model S/X in terms of software updates and supercharger support (mostly in CCS2 countries, but its coming to the US too as they start transitioning to supporting CCS and non-Tesla J3400 vehicles)

Thanks, Steve! I really think we need to start setting up a network of independent EV-certified shops. It's amazing how many mechanics still don't want to touch cars with HV batteries.

I feel lucky in our area. Matt's shop is my go-to but we have a few others serving New England as well. Would definitely love to see a single resource to recommend independent shops, especially as more and more pre-owned EVs hit the market.

Thanks, Steve. Nice to know an indy can get Tesla's "toolbox software". Maybe that's mandated by the right to repair legislation, but at least it's available.

Nice to see that indies are begining to fill the gap. For a year or so after I retired, I was helping part time at Tampa Hybrids and they are moving into more & more EV sales. I won’t be surprised to see them start repairing Leafs and Bolts in the next year or two. What would be super nice is an online registry of EV repair independents along with reviews and rating.

I love the registry suggestion. If I come across one in my research, I'll make a note to return and post it here.

I will say, I'm jealous of that lift. I could really use that for working on my Ford Ranger EVs. Life is hard for shadetree mechanics. 😀
