Its really depressing seeing Dutch go from a proud and charismatic man, into a sad, broken shell of a human being. Maybe he was always crazy from the the beginning, but RdR2 shows us that he's a lier, manipulater, and a gaslighter (He left John and then Arthur to die when no one was looking, and tried to make them think they were tripping) who can't accept the truth or his mistakes. And RdR1 shows us he's a charlatan and a straight up degenerate with no redeeming qualities. That would rather kill innocent people or die than try to live a normal life as just a man instead of an outlaw.

I think Hosea perfectly reigned him in a bit, when he died, coupled with maybe a head injury from the job at the trolly station, is what sent him over the edge
